If I would want to get one or two wrestlers into a tournament (far to small to get a team in), would I just call the tournament and ask to fit them in as Unattached? How does the "Unattached" system work?

For duels I think if one team has two wrestlers at one weight, and anouther team has none, you can talk to the other team and let one of your wrestlers wrestle for them but be unattached. If all the spots are filled on every team im pretty sure you wont be able to get them in. I think the same goes for tournaments, but i could be mistaken

Depending on how many kids you want to bring, you may be able to enter them as a team. Most tournaments won't have completely full brackets, and the tournament director may not be opposed to having you enter your team, which it sounds like would consist of a couple of wrestlers. You could even have your team points kept. I would just start contacting the directors of the tournaments you are interested in attending.

I wish I could remember the kid's name, but I can remember when (2000-01-02 or so) Hutch Trinity had a like 112 or 119-pounder who was their only wrestler and he'd come to tournaments and do pretty well at them. There aren't a lot of tournaments around that couldn't accomidate a situation like that.

I thought the unattached system was only in colleges for kids that were red shirting. I think (I am pretty sure)you still enter the one or 2 kids under the High School they are affiliated with.

i dont think so because there were a couple tournoments where our bracate was full and we had to send a second kid at a weight to a jv tournoment. Im sure though for regionals and mabey league you can only have one kid at each weight for each team

In Arizona we have a rule that a team can enter two wrestlers at one weight class, if the tournament director approves. However, the coach of that team must designate in advance which wrestler will score team points. I like the rule, but haven't seen anyone take advantage of it yet.

So if a team has two tough kids at the same weight, the unattached kid can help the team win by keeping the other teams out of the finals? That's the same as scoring points.

There are tournaments in Kansas that follow those rules. Normally, it states that in the invitational letter. We've attended a dual tournament that allows for a "combined" team to compete in it as well. They take several JV wrestlers from the various teams competing in the tournament and form another team from them. For those who argue that some kids from JV teams could be state qualifiers if they weren't stuck behind a "stud," this is a great way to show that depth. If both kids are good enough to win matches in the bracket, then, yes, it does take points away from someone else. In the same breath, it also gives more competition time to some who wouldn't get the chance at the full compliment of matches a varsity wrestler might.
