I usually stay as far away from the "Talk Page" as I can \:\) However, I know that many of you know our boys. The youngest, Alex, had Spinal Fusion surgery yesterday. He is still hospitalized but should be home in a day or two. If I'm a little slow for the next few weeks, I apologize in advance. I will do my best to get cards out and questions answered as soon as I can.

I know exactly what he's goin through right now and I expect with his kind of attitude he'll be feeling pretty good in a few months. Just make sure he wears his neck brace religously. It can make for a long day when he doesn't.

I too know what that is like. Tell him to stay focused and do his therapy religiously. We send out support.

Thanks to everyone for the kind thoughts. I wasn't aware that Kathy had posted this, and between work, practice, doing web updates and spending time at the hospital, I had not had the chance to catch up on the forum until this evening.

Alex was in surgery for about seven hours on Tuesday. The surgeon felt that the surgery went well and is very optimistic about his recovery, although he warned us that it will take several months before he can expect to be pain-free. There were some problems with his epidural which caused a loss of feeling in his lower extremities and delayed his discharge from the hospital, but we expect that he'll be getting out tomorrow.

By the way, Curtis, he won't be using a neck brace. Unlike your operation, his was done at the other end of the spine. Alex suffered a broken vertebrae (pars fractures) in his lower back while playing football in the sixth grade. At the time the doctors had hoped that, with rest, the breaks would fuse on their own, but this didn't happen and continuing pain (compounded by a herniated disk) finally made the surgery a necessity.

The good news is that the surgeon said that spinal fusion surgery with this type of injury has a 95% likelihood of success, with only a minor reduction in flexibility.
