Carroll favorite in CL wrestling meet
BY JON MCGILLIVRAY
Wichita Eagle correspondent

Four duals complete the City League wrestling season tonight and the postseason begins with the league tournament on Saturday at Heights.

First-round matches begin at 9 a.m. The championship semifinals will follow first-competition, with the consolation quarterfinals to begin at 1 p.m.

The league determines its wrestling champion by a combination of the regular season schedule and the league tournament results.

Last season, Bishop Carroll -- the heavy favorite on Saturday -- went 8-0 in duals and won the tourney title and overall championship.

Nine defending individual champions return for this season's league tournament, though only Northwest's Justin Ringgold at 152 pounds has stayed in the same weight class. He'll have to beat an undefeated Kyle Deter of Carroll -- the 145-pound champion last season -- if he is to retain the 152-pound title.

Other returning champions include Jordan Keller, John Keller, Mitch Arnold and Timmy Chad of Carroll; Kendric Maple of Heights; Joe Hagan of Kapaun; and Kyle Caylor of Northwest.

Heights wrestlers pin hopes on high finish

The Falcons host the City League meet on Saturday.
BY JON MCGILLIVRAY
Wichita Eagle correspondent

After a disappointing City League finish last season, the Heights wrestling team is expecting better results in Saturday's league tournament at Heights.

First-round matches begin at 9 a.m., followed by the championship semifinals. Consolation quarterfinals start at 1 p.m., with the championships scheduled for 6.

While Bishop Carroll appears poised to win its seventh straight league title, the Falcons, who were 3-5 in duals and fifth at the league meet last season, would like secure at least the runner-up spot.

"I think we have a good chance at second in the tournament. We have three kids that should be champions and several other kids that should place," Heights coach Todd Sacquitne said.

"It's going to depend on the kids coming out of the back side of the bracket and placing in the third- and fourth-place matches."

The Falcons will rely on freshman Daniel DeShazer (112 pounds), and juniors Kendric Maple (130) and Chase Nelson (135) to emerge as league champions. They are a combined 91-2 this season, with DeShazer and Nelson suffering their only losses at the Newton Tournament of Champions.

Maple (30-0) is a two-time league champion -- at 112 pounds as a freshman and 119 last season -- and placed third at the Class 6A tournament last season, while Nelson (30-1) finished third at 112 in the CL tournament, but went on to win a state title.

The trio admitted that short of something drastic happening to Carroll's wrestlers, their goal is to finish at least second in the tournament.

"Bishop Carroll's pretty solid -- they've been blowing teams out by a hundred points," Maple said.

DeShazer (31-1) said the Falcons want to finish above Northwest, which finished second in the dual standings.

"That's our main goal. But if we could, we'd like to beat Bishop Carroll. It's a possibility." Nelson said.

All agreed a second-place finish would be an improvement over last season, when the Falcons finished 63 points out of fourth.

Sacquitne said their leadership has helped the Falcons' young squad.

"I expect them all to be leaders throughout the tournament," he said. "Kendric has been our leader all year long, and Chase has started to become more of a leader for us throughout the season.

"Dap (DeShazer) right now as a freshman is kind of feeling his way through, but he's picked some guys up and been a good practice partner for Dondre Davis (119 pounds), making him better."

Carroll dominates CL wrestling
BY JON MCGILLIVRAY
Wichita Eagle correspondent
The most anticipated battle at Saturday's City League wrestling tournament was for second place.

Bishop Carroll dominated the tournament with eight individual champions for a seventh straight league title , while Northwest edged host Heights by seven points for second place.

Carroll erased any drama from the team standings in the first two rounds, jumping out to an early 100-point lead.

Carroll 145-pound senior Mitch Arnold, winner of a third straight league title, said things went about as expected for the Eagles.

"I think it went really well," Arnold said. "You can't really ask for anything better. We won another tournament as a team, so we're happy for that."

Northwest and Heights battled throughout the day, with the results not settled until the final two matches.

Brock Heithaus' 5-2 victory for Northwest over Carroll's Tony Marquez at 285 pounds secured second place for the Grizzlies.

While there were several expected champions crowned -- Carroll's Dylan Penka (103), Jordan Keller (119), John Keller (125), Arnold (145), Kyle Detmer (152), Tyler Rosenhammer (160) and Tim Chadd (171); Heights' Daniel Deshazer (112), Kendric Maple (130) and Chase Nelson (135); and Northwest's Trey Page (189) and Heithaus -- there were a few surprises.

East senior Tom Maley won his first league championship when he pinned D.J. Collins of South in 3:26 to win at 140 pounds, while Carroll's Jake Cole defeated Northwest's Kyle Caylor 5-3 at 215.

It's been a tough year for the Blue Aces as a team, but Maley said it's helped make him a better wrestler.

"I wouldn't be anywhere if wasn't for them. They push me in practice everyday," he said.

"Coach has taught me so much more. They've brought my game up just to a different level. I was not anywhere near the wrestler I am right now, that I was a year ago."

Cole's victory over Caylor was not so much a stunning upset, as it was a surprise.

Both are ranked at 215 pounds. Cole is second in Class 5A, while Caylor is first in 6A.

Caylor defeated Cole in last season's tournament and went on to win two national titles this summer, while being ranked in the top 10 nationally throughout this season.

"Jake and Caylor, they've wrestled several times over the past couple of years, and being from Northwest... it's a big match to start with," Carroll coach Darian Eshelman said.

"Kyle got the better of us during the dual this year and we've been waiting for Jake to really take off this year.... It's really exciting to see Jake peaking here at the right time during February this year."

I will not rant. I will not rant. I will not rant. Deep breaths....First of all: Kudos to Bishop Carroll Catholic High School. You guys were awesome.

Now.......Officials: Please, a little effort. Keep the guys in the middle of the mat and make them wrestle! You have the power to not let them hang out on the edge of the mat. Also, I checked....Stalemate(two fists brought to chest) is still allowed to be called. Additionally, stalling CAN be called on top or bottom wrestler. Finally, you kinda create the emotion of the wrestlers, coaches, and fans. I come to see a balls out effort-may the best man win. If you don't use your authority to promote aggressive wrestling then you, quite frankly, are not doing your job. That's when things go south. You put yourself in the position to need earmuffs. So put them on. Go ahead and take a mulligan and put them on. End rant.

To be clear. This rant is not directed at the Eagles, rather the whole atmosphere of last nights matches.

I agree with stalling and raise you if your hands are on the mat and your knee's are in bounds and last but not least your opponent is behind you, thats two points. Why have two ref's, Ive yet to see a bad call seriously disscussed yet this season. As for stalling anytime you have the ankle hooked and your looking at the clock geuss what your stalling.

Recovering from an injury!

We do hope Stephen is healthy for Regionals this Saturday at Valley Center.

I agree with the stalling comments. It was like going to a track meet and occassionally a wrestling match would break out. Some of these kids learn to do this (run) in kids and it carries over into high school. It is frustrating. Some kids wrestle NOT TO LOSE, rather than wrestling offensively to win. I even saw a coach get thrown out (which now means he can't coach at Regionals) for questioning a stalling call. Here is the senario: Wrestlers are in the neutral position, wrestler A gets warned for stalling, then takes wrestler B down and doesn't get awarded any points because the ref said he was stopping the match due to wrestler A stalling. It clearly states in the rule book that you do not stop a match for stalling if wrestlers are in the neutral position. This rule was brought up to the powers that be at the tournament to no avail. They said they would review the rule and talk to the coach at the last break. During the break they told the coach that their decision stood and they would not be discussing it any further. Excuse me but when this happened (during the match) and the head ref was busy reffing a match, and another ref came over to see what was going on, shouldn't that ref have said, "it's a rule and you are wrong" to the other ref?...or should he have done exactly as he did and back up the ref even though THEY were WRONG??? My take is that neither of them knew the rule so now the coach and his team get S and T'd for Regionals. Just goes to show you, "You can't find good help anywhere!"

I guess I agree with 100%. Someone should be there with an actual rule book up to date to show the refs when they make a bad call.

Another coach from a different school did have the rule book and gave it to the coach to show the ref. Apparently it didn't matter.

well yea i would guess so...but it also says that whatever the ref says goes. I think if there is like a very unfair ruling due to the ref that spectors and such should have a say in it and at least form a little protest by pulling there child out of the competion and other will do the same. Idk just a guess. but I guess thats not a good idea
