How many of you have heard this from a five or six year old? hey dad since you don't beleive in me winning the weight class in my natural weight, I would love to cut out all candy and for you to starve me so i can loose 3 to 6 pounds. maybe one day i can become a kid again and wrestle where i should.

Now you have never heard a kid say that! I think kids should be kids, when there 8 and 9 years old if they want to loose a few pounds they can but 5 and 6 is way to young to pull weight.

I honestly think anything younger that middle schoolers cutting weight is ridiculous ( even then it should be low amounts). I think everyone is entitled to do what they want though. It's another thing if the kid is hefty and simply regulating thier diet to a healthier one helps them drop down a little. But trying to bring a kid down to a very low body fat /weight ratio while thier body is actively growing and maturing is not the most advisable thing to do.

What is this post all about? I don't know of any 5 or 6 year olds that pull weight. personally I don't think 10ths should matter at 6 and under. I never even heard of any 6 and under looseing 3-6 pounds, maybe .3 to .5 and thats not pulling weight.

maybe the win is more important than there kids safety? if any one has seen real sports with brian gumble. and seen the affects horse jockeys went through by cutting weight, would be a fool to put there kids in that type of situation. just my thoughts kids safety first fun second winning third.

This kid pulling 3 pounds at 6 will lose intrest in the sport before he gets to High School. Anyone who does that with a 6 year old I guarantee is putting pressure on his kid as to the outcome of his matches. That child will soon think wrestling is no fun and fizzle out.

i would move my son up a weight class before i made him lose 3 pounds. have already done it this year. My son weighed in at 55, 56, 57 all year. he has wrestled one tournament at 55, all but 2 after that at 58 and those other 2 at 61. its good to move them around but would move them up and not down.

i would agree my son weighs in at 39.6 once he weighs in at 40 1 time then he is going to 43. guess i could make him miss a meal and run to get back to 39, but i won't well just move up.

My son is 12 wrestling 88 since the beginning of the year, but usually wieghs in around 85 to 86. I put him at 88 even though he was about 84 at the beginning of the season because even at 12 years old I dont want him cutting wieght. There is great compitition at 88 and wouldn't think about dropping down or going up to have a better shot because I believe tough comp. makes a better wrestler. Those of you making a 6 year old drop wieght should think about what you are doing to thier body!! They do alot of growing at this age and should not be cutting wieght, you should be taking them up in wieght, they are still just learning anyway.

One more thing to add. My son eats and eats and eats at the beginning of each week. He loads up on carbs. We slow down on the portions at the end of the week but still let him eat a regular meal. I have been monitoring this since the Salina tournament now. In my opinion his energy level at these past tournaments is far higher than what we were doing in the beginning of the season. Dang I hope I didnt just give out my secret to success. That will be 5 bucks each time you use this method. No for real some of you should try this and see for yourself. those kids need to eat at this young age. I am no doctor but I have heard that it could hurt the growth of the child in the following years. Thats just what ive heard.

If you want your child to enjoy wrestling and continue on in Middle and High School ignore the weight they wrestle and concentrate on making sure the kids are learning the fundamentals and more impoprtantly having fun.

heck I just hope my son wants to continue from year to year. He also plays basketball and is one of the key players on the team. He likes basketball very much. This is what he said about basketball. He said he likes to play basketball because its easy. LOL. That takes me back to highschool again. wrestlers vs. the other type of kids. oh yeah them darn roundballers.

my son is a freshman this year he has wrestled for 12 of his 15 years of life so far.he cut 2 lbs for state when he was 8 and never again untill this year as a freshman,he cut 3 lbs to get to 125 and bumped to 130 for reg.and got 3rd.and was 4 lbs under at weighins. So its not what you weight, its who and how you wrestle.

when i was wrestling in kids clubs early 80's i was sucking weight off each year, only 3-4 lbs. put when i graduated high school i only weighed 90lbs. yes i had a great couple years in kids club but i would have rather done that in high school. thank about it there are no scouts looking at kids clubs. lots of people don't even remember who was last years state champs. (only a hand full and family).
i personally herd Bobby Douglas tell an Oklahoma kids club couch he was not interested in what a kid did before he was a JR. in high school. "i don't care if he is a couple time triple crown winner as a kid. it is great for him and his family. but i need to know if he can work hard as a young adult. I can make a hard working wrestler a champion".
To me it is all just practice tell high school.. don't get me wrong I'm proud of kids and their champion ships. i just look for the big picture. i would rather walk down not run.
