First off Congratulations Cody! It is always nice to have a wrestling coach up there in the administration. This is a great opportunity for someone to take over a good program. Everything has been brought up about how the program has underachieved and how the team should be better, now this is a great opportunity for this program to move forward. Cody is a great guy and did a good job with the program, but it is hard to recruit to a program if you do not have a head coach with a big name. Now believe me, there are a lot of people who can coach that do not have the National Championship credentials, but it is hard to recruit the top kids if you don't. Nebraksa-Kearney has done it, but Marc Bauer has built his name up and recruits as hard as anyone I know. This is the type of program that Kansas needs to set it's examples after. Bauer is a Kearney High graduate, but he wrestled for UNO another top program. I personally think (and my opionion probably doesn't matter) that FHSU needs to look into recruiting a coach off of a successful staff. Make a move after one of the assistants from these top schools. It is hard to get a Division I stud to take a Division II job. Kearney has a lot of graduates that are now in the coaching ranks. UNO carries a lot of Graduate Assistants that might be interested. There are plenty of great coaches out there, now they have to go find one.
Nothing against the Hays team of recent, I have some great friends that wrestled on those teams, but I think they have to look outside that box and bring in someone that has been involved first hand with these winning programs. Hays is right in the middle of the top three Division II programs and it would be a hotbed for some young coach to get a hold of.
