At 112, VanderLinden has beaten Zaldivar, but this weekend in Eureka, he was beaten twice and finished 4th. Howard (Eureka)finished 3rd. Anthony Henely(Herington)finished 2nd (pinning a common opponent Vanderlinden lost to) and finished 2nd to Breen in a close match (we cut him at the end to go for the win). Henely was 6th in the rankings last week, but fell out this week. Looks like that was a good weight at Eureka and could be a preview of at least some of the state medalists.
My feelings (take it for what it's worth):
1)Bainter
2)Breen/Werner
3)Breen/Werner
4)Henely
5)Howard
6)VanderLinden
6b)Zaldivar

Wellsville will be at Chase Co. You should get to see Breen again.

5 of top 10 teams are MCL

Reminds me of the year that they won 2A, 3A and 4A State football
(I think Victoria, Plainville, Norton ...85 maybe?)

At 171 Gavin Miller of Lyons pinned Sheldon Meitler at the Halstead Tournament in the Semifinals. Meitler finished 3rd, Braden Long from Southeast-Saline took 2nd losing to Miller 3-2 in the finals. Clint Taylor of TMP may be more deserving of a ranking having pinned Trent Stevenson at the Ellsworth Tournament and beating him 4-2 at the Hays Tournament. But, Derek Rowland from Phillipsburg did finish ahead of Clint Taylor at Hays placing 2nd to Clint Taylor’s 6th.

Please rank everyone above our kids, they don't wrestle well when they are ranked. How do you do the team rankings? Phillipsburg took 3rd at Hays behind Goodland. Thanks

Now that would sure compromise the integrity of the rankings.

Oh.. My fault. I guess I was a little surprised that an assistant coach would actually go on here and say that.....

Coach Brown -

Coach Steiger is correct that Anthony Henely placed ahead of Vander Linden at the Eureka Tourney at 112, and beat a common opponent. Henely also had a very good match with Breen in the finals.

Vander Linden was not able to wrestle the 3rd place against Howard of Eureka due to the 5 match rule, which KWCA would like to get changed, but that is another topic on this forum already.

Just an update as you continue to sort things out heading into February. Thanks for all your work!

Coach Vander Linden

Rankings are a tough thing to do on a week-to-week basis so thanks Coach Brown for your efforts. That having been said, a few thoughts:

* Where are the Keiswetter boys from Norton? If healthy, Landon and Keanon should both be ranked....high! This makes the Bluejays a Top 3 team, if not #1

* I'm an Ellsworth native, but the Bearcats shouldn't be ranked 5th. And Trent (not Treat) Stevenson should probably not be ranked at 171. Phillipsburg should be in the 5th place team slot and Derek Rowland of Pburg should be ranked fairly high at 171

* Silver Lake should be at least 6th, instead of unranked

I didn't mean for it to seem bad in my last post. Some kids do well under pressure (like being ranked), and some get big heads. Wrestlers check the rankings all the time. I was being sarcastic. I think the final rankings at state should matter the most to the wrestlers. Coach Brown does a great job with the rankings and putting in extra time. I was just adding a little humor.

I have to agree Holiday. Norton should benefit from an easier regional than they are used to attending. Goodland is the only other deep team attending the Ellis regional. That should allow Norton and Goodland to qualify more kids than on a normal northwest regional year. I would guess Norton to get around 10 kids(if healthy) and Goodland around 8. Beloit, S.C., P-burg, Ellsworth,P-Ville, Hoisington, & Osborne all attend the Beloit regional. Should see the most state placers come from this regional with the Ellis regional 2nd. However S.C. should still get 8 to 10 with a good tourney, P-Ville & P-Burg around 6. I know P-Burg has some banged up kids (could be more), Osborne 4 or 5. Point is Norton, S.C., Beloit, & Goodland will all qualify a good number of kids. It will come down to champions and backside on Sat. I would agree with the teams in the top 10, but maybe not the order. I believe it is S.C. to defend this year and could see Norton, Beloit, & Goodland all right there. Should be as close of a top 4 finish as we have seen in a while.

On a side note Norton has already won against S.C. in tournament action and S.C. finished ahead of Beloit last week.
I believe Norton or S.C. (can't remember I'm getting old) finished ahead of Goodland in tournament action. Not always a true measuring stick, but it is something to chew on.

Congratulations to 4th ranked Nicholas Mueller, 130 lbs., Hillsboro, for setting the new school career wins record in winning all five of his matches at the Cardinal Classic round robin in Hoisington. He now has 120 career wins, his latest being a 17-12 victory over 3rd ranked Levi Schneider, Ellsworth.
