--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEWTON — The Newton High School wrestling team concluded one of the most successful dual meet seasons in team history Thursday at Ravenscroft Gym, stopping Campus 60-9 on senior night.
Newton won nine of the 12 matches on the mat. Six of the wins were by fall. Newton ends the regular season 12-1-1, 4-1 in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division II dual meets. Newton won its last seven straight dual meets. Campus is ranked ninth in the Class 6A coaches poll. Newton is eighth in the Class 5A poll.
“We actually did a pretty good job tonight,” Newton coach Jude Wilson said. “The guys looked like they were ready to go. We still made some mistakes, but we got the job done.”
Seniors honored included Michael McFarlane, Nathan Murphy, Garrett Garcia, Cole Inghram, Nathaniel Martens, Willie Howell, Travis Rogers, Rylan Dalke, Robbie Dawkins and Logan Miller.
Newton set the tone at 103, where Zeke Clardy posted a 29 second win. Other wins by fall went to Dalke at 130 pounds, Dawkins at 135 pounds, Joel Gouvion at 140 pounds, Rogers at 160 pounds and Garcia at 171 pounds. Garcia’s pin was in 24 seconds.
“Zeke looked good,” Wilson said. “He went out there, made his shot and took (his opponent) to his back.”
Murphy won by technical fall at 152 pounds. Inghram won by major decision at 215 pounds. Hugh McConnell won by decision at 145 pounds.
Rigo Magana at 112 pounds and David Garcia at heavyweight both won by forfeit.
Helam Hernandez at 119 pounds, Seth Klein at 125 pounds and Martens at 189 pounds all fell by decision, keeping Campus’ score to single digits. Klein and Martens both fell to ranked opponents.
“We had some of those matches that go either way,” Wilson said. “We just didn’t get it done tonight.”
Newton competes at regionals Feb. 21 at Andover Central. The junior varsity competes Saturday at Valley Center.
“We get one more week to get ready for regionals,” Wilson said. “We have to continue to improve on bottom. It may not have looked like it tonight, except in a couple of matches, but we need to work on it.”

Probably because Salina South and Ark City will score more points than Newton will at the state tournament according to the rankings. Ark City could have 3 finalist, so this will be a huge boost in points.
