They are 16 man double elimination brackets with an additional 5th place match. First round will have district 1 kids wrestling district 4 kids. District 2 will wrestle district 3. District champions will wrestle the 4th seed from the other district and district runners up will wrestle the 3rd seed from the other district.

So, for example, the district one champion will wrestle the first round against the 4th place from district 4. The district 3 runner up would wrestle the 3rd place winner from district 2.

The 2nd round nobody knows yet. It will be released after districts so that people do not intentionally lose at districts for a more favorable place in the state bracet, but will be set up so that the district champions won't meet until the semi finals.

Where do the others fall in the 16-man bracket? I know where each 1st and 4th place district finisher goes, but what about the 2nd and 3rd place finishers? How do fill in the other spots?

it is a shame they announce the district pairings in advance, someone will "default" a match to get on the opposite side of the bracket from someone.

That is precisely why they don't tell you the entire bracket. You only know the first round opponent. You don't know on which side of the brackets each of the number one seeds will fall.

I am not sure, but I think windjammer is partially correct. I have had the same question in years past and have been confused by the answers.

Obviously seeds 1 v. 4 and 2 v. 3. I think the only unknown is what 1 v. 4 winner does the 2 v. 3 winner wrestle? There are only two choices each year, not four. So they don't completely draw the second round. For example this year round one would look like this:

I-1 v. IV-4
II-2 v. III-3 or II-3 v. III-2 (this is the unknown and draw)

II-2 v. III-3 or II-3 v. III-2 (again unknown and drawn)
IV-1 v. I-4

(likewise for the other 8 kids)

Otherwise, if they drew the entire second round, you might have the number 1 and 2 from the same district wrestle each other in the second round. I am no expert or authority, but I looked at our state brackets three out of the last four years and it has always looked like the above. And common sense would say you would not draw and have kids from the same district facing each other in the second round.

I see what Windjammer is saying. The 2,3,and 4 placers from each district will vary in the bracket by where the #1's are placed. If they announce only which district is wrestling whom in the 1st round, but not which two number 1's will be on the same side of the bracket, it is very difficult to figure out.

I noticed since I had a kid at state in Oklahoma for the first time this year that each weight had a different draw for the #1 seed. For example, 70# had district A and C on the same side, 75# had B and C. Drew each weight separately.

Good luck to everyone!
