I did have him ranked. Baughman moved down to 160 and he is a 2X placer. I will look at that again tomorrow. Just got info that Gaskill is going 60 also. Where did Royal beat Gaskill, Davis and Perez?

How is Evon Royal not ranked at 160 when he was third in the sate last year behind two seniors and also placed at Kids state and a few different national tournaments?

Bonilla is indeed a junior.
I have been wanting to comment about him and others from 103-119 for some time but was hoping someone else would so I would not be the bad guy who is offending someone. It looks as though no one else is going to comment about it though, so I will.
To begin with, I will reiterate that Chief is doing a great job with the rankings and I commend him for his efforts. I really enjoy the rankings, they are really fun.
With that said, I do not see how anyone, especially a freshman, can be ranked ahead of Bonilla other than Pursel. The freshman listed at 103 are all indeed legit for freshman but it is a long way from 14 and under 90 to high school 103 and I do not think they have earned that yet. Bonilla was kids state champ at 105 not 90. Additionally, he was second last year at kids state to Prescott by a point in a monster bracket and was second this year at Brute Nationals at 105. Based on these things, I believe Bonilla should be #2 at 103 and I can't wait to see him and Pursel go at it.
I also believe there is way too much emphasis on this years kids state results with regard to 103 as I see why you put the freshman where you did. There are other returning high school state placers that if they go 103 should be ranked ahead of these freshman. Guys like Calderon, Garcia, Wolfe, Lies, Mieher, Goepfert, Avelar, etc. Guys like Dremel and Kolterman should be factored also, but I beleive they will go at 112. There are guys that qualified for high school state that did not place but should still be factored like Perez, Hodges, Dean, Harris, Torrez, etc. There are others I am forgetting also.
I believe that Vieyra should be ranked. I see why he is not, because he placed behind Burley, Mulligan, Reed at kids state but I do not think he should be measured just on that. He was a high school state qualifier last year giving up a lot of weight. Maybe he just had a bad weekend this year at kids state. Since then he has gotten even better and placed at Fargo. I believe he should be measured by that and should be ranked. If Calderon goes 103, he should be ranked. He placed at high school state behing Windham, Whitten and Dremel. This year, I know at kids state he was one win from placing in a very difficult bracket won be Pursel but last year he won a monster bracket at kids state beating Burley in the final. If Wolfe goes 103, he should definately be ranked as he placed at high school state beating the bigger Hood that is ranked at 112.
I believe at 112 that Schumacher could beat half of the ranked 112 pounders and should be about #6, #7 at the lowest. I know that he is Chief's boy so Chief doesn't want to put him up there like that but he has only had like 2 losses in the last three years losing in the kids state finals to Pursel.
At 119, Wrestler should be about #4 or #5. He placed at high school state last year at 119. He has proven himself at that weight. The rest of the guys were at 112 or even 103.
So these are my opinions based on evidence. Again, I mean no disrepect to all of the ranked freshman. They are all indeed legit but they should still have to earn the rankings. I believe there are other "returners" that have already earned that.
Have a great day!

What is Bonilla's high school record at 103lbs?? I thought I seen him in a couple of 119lbs brackets last year. Bonilla can't hang with Pursel. Pursel will crush at that weight this year!!
I agree with you on the Wrestler kid from Chanute @ 119lbs. He is tough and could be ranked as high as #7 on that list.

Bonilla is legit. He can wrestle with any of these kids including Bo. Obviously I am biased and hope for Bo to beat him, but he is very good. He is an enigma since he has not wrestled alot of 103 varsity. But he beat Drydent 3 of 4 last year. He is a quality wrestler.

We all know how legit hard core Pursel is. Nobody said Bonilla will beat Pursel, so there is no need for anyone to "defend" him. I do not want to get into a debate/argument over Bonilla right now, but you will see that he is better than you obviously think he is. He has beaten a lot of high quality kids over the years. His body type and wrestling style I believe will make quite a match up with Pursel. Obviously Pursel is the favorite to beat anyone but I believe Pursel-Bonilla will be very exciting and I am ready to see it. And remember, nobody thought Seybold would beat Pursel either.

Coach Lemon,

I like it that Freshmen are getting recognized in the rankings. In fact, their pre high school careers should be considered when you are seeding that first high school tournament. Many of these eighth graders have seen tougher competition in kids than they will see most of their first year in high school, especially at the lighter weights. I would rather see freshmen considered in the speculation than completely discounted just because they haven't wrestled a high school match yet.

At Ryne's first HS tournament they REFUSED to seed him. It was a pool tournament where only the winner of each pool would advance to the medal matches. He won the tournament out of the two seed's pool. Not very fair to the two seed.

Summer and Kids wrestling on the national level is, for the most part, much tougher than the average Kansas high school dual or tournament.

Also, it is hard to measure 321A versus the remaining classes as well. Most 321A schools do not participate in the toughest HS tournaments with 4A,5A, and 6A schools. (Norton being an exception). Point, Francisco Antillon won state in 07 and 08 in 321A at 103. He didn't place at 112 in 4A in 09.

The Chief is on the road today so I am backing him up! smile

Bonilla will be the #1 ranked kid @ 103 in class 6A, that is a pretty dang good spot to start the year I would think. I wouldn't sleep on that Goddard team this year either. They lost a ton of points but will still be right there in the end at state for that class 6A team trophy. 'Health' and 'want to' will decide that class this year..

You would have Schumacher above Seybold and Seaton?

I am not sure if Goepfert, Avelar, Hodges, and Harris will even make 103 this year. Because Goepfert, Hodges, and Harris wrestled at 110 for kids state and i seen that Hodges was listed at 115 for brute. If your talking about the 321A Andrew Mieher then i do believe he was a senior last year and already graduated.

Thanks just thought i would put a little info to try to help.

Cokely,

I don't think Antillion's situation is a very fair assessment of the toughness of 321A. Not taking anything away from Antillion, he is a class act and a tough wrestler but 103 was not the most competitive weight the years that he won it. Look just one weight up at 112 the first year Antillion won it (2007) and you'll find Devin Frye, Dillon Stucky, Dan Weigel, Jace Campbell, Colt Rogers, Zach Cemen, Collin Hase, Aaron Geist, and Kaenon Keiswetter. I'd say there is still some good competition that we run into on a regular basis out here.

Oh man, I knew that this would get juicy real quick if I commented but slow down people. Nobody said that those freshman should be "discounted". I gave them their just props. It is more about the non freshman kids that I think should be recognized that right now are not.
Yes, Bonilla is the top 6A kid listed and could be #1 in 6A when those rankings come out, but I still have no evidence that would warrent anyone other than Pursel being ahead of him on the Chief list. Bonilla may not even be #1 in 6A though when the rankings come out if you factor in the returning medalist.
There is however no reason to defend anyone though and there is no reason to "back up" the Chief as I have always given him his just dues as well. I can have an opinion just like Chief or anyone else but here is the difference. My son has wrestled almost all of these kids that I have made reference to or he has been in their bracket at some point so I probably know more about them than Chief and most other people. I admit that he knows more about the fourteen weights collectively but not 103-119. I have seen all of these kids wrestle many times. My son has also wrestled Seybold, Seaton and Schumacher and that is all that I will say about that right now.
Please try not to get so twisted over my opinions though and have a great day!
