We will be there! Looking forward to spending Valentine's Day watching wrestling. Does that make me crazy or what?

Think we'll celebrate with dinner the night before at Whiskey Creek in Hays. I understand one of the investors of that restaurant are wrestling parents.

Hope everyone in NW KS will make an effort to get to Hays on Sunday.

The 15th ranked Tigers wrestle Truman State at 1:00, Central Missouri at 3:00 and #1 ranked Nebraska Omaha at 5:00.

Omaha is nationally ranked at all 10 weight classes. The Tigers are ranked at 4 weights and probably should be at another. Ought to be some great match-ups!

Let's pack the house and cheer on the Tigers!

The Rencountre vs. Boehm match was very exciting and hard fought, but I thought the refs lost control of the match early on and never got it back. Not sure the outcome would have been any different, but I hate to see the match determined by so many penalty points. Also not sure the refs and table workers were on top of accurately tracking all those penalty points.

As I said first, very exciting match but wild in a bad way.

Not sure what you mean, but it was a fun time in Hays. (oh you must mean Sunflower League! Yes this weekend I saw 2 of the wildest matches I've witnessed in awhile)

For the UNO vs FHSU dual I happened to sit next to a very nice FHSU student who knew several of their wrestlers. His comments and input added a little extra interest to the matches.

I was very impressed with the FHSU fans - their crowd was very loud and proud of their team. It was a good dual and although I don't think the outcome was in doubt, some of the individual matches were exciting. FHSU battled hard and won some matches I would not have expected. None of the other matches came close to being wild in the way of the 184 lb match and I put that on the refs.

Lou Ann you are correct on the #184 bout. My wife and I watched via web from the UNO web site. Chance Rencountre is a tough kid and cut weight to help the team after Tyler Gonzales (son) had shoulder surgery on December 19th. The angle we watched was from the UNO side and the voice mike picked up the UNO coaches and team. I thought their was confusion on several situations. I thought Chance had pin-fall. But I am a FHSU graduate and I know the UNO bench wanted a penalty call on stalling. It was a good dual and I just hope Chance knee is OK and he does not have to sit out this Wednesday night dual with Grand Canyon and UNK. Wish we could have been at Hays to support the Tigers. Saving that money. Tyler will be a sixth year Senior next year and hopeful the shoulder heals and we can go watch him wrestle next season. Good Luck to the Tigers on Wednesday night. Ole RMG

Good to hear from you, Coach Gonzales. We had missed seeing Tyler this year and my FHSU neighbor in the stands told me about his surgery. I also hope he has a complete and successful recovery and is back on the mat next year.

We were fortunate to avoid the early fall. It is very difficult to overcome such an early deficit.

I saw a similar wild match last year while I was standing right at matside. In the first period, both wrestlers were given a penalty point and a brief, firm, private lecture for a slugfest. I was fearful that one or both or the wrestlers would be DQ'd for unsportsmanlike conduct. The ref was in total control for the remainder of the match. He stayed very close to the action and was ready to step in quickly if needed. He made sure the wrestling
decided the match.

I loved the Ft. Hayes dual. It seems that a lot of teams don't step up and challenge UNO (for good reason) but Ft. Hayes did (as did Augsburg) and UNO needs this every now and then. I do think it will be hard for any team to put together the necessary 5 wins plus bonus points it requires to beat them tho. UNO is just so deep at every weight. Their entire starting lineup is full of legit DI recruits and the backups could start for most DII teams.

I thought 141 was entertaining too. Morgan is so tough right now. 22 straight heading into regionals means he is on a serious roll. Too bad Harrison did not wrestle.

184 was the match of the day. I hope these two hook up again in Omaha. I will make sure I am not at the concession stand if they do.

I know we UNO fans can be pretty full of ourselves, but it is a real testament to the Coaches and the program when guys choose to stay with the team as back ups when they could likely go somewhere else and start. I haven't been around forever, but I have not heard of any wrestler in recent history who left UNO to wrestle somewhere else. It is great to be part of a successful team that acts and feels like a family.

In addition, as a Kansan, and from what I saw yesterday in Hays, FHSU is well on its way to the same kind of tradition.

Anyone know how the FHSU heavyweight is? He's pretty tough to finish the match after whatever happened to cause his finger to point off in a weird angle. You could see his hand swelling and that he really couldn't put any weight on that hand after they taped the fingers.

Just got back from Western Kansas this afternoon.

Fort Hays could have won that dual against UNO. Younkin lost 3-2 on riding time in a match that somehow he didn't realize he was losing. So, there was minimal action on his part and certainly not an urgency in the last minute. Sometimes there is too much wax in the ears. If Glenn had some fire in his belly he would have beat Madison. Glenn scored the only takedown and had a very questionable fleeing call that cost him a point while trying to break hands. Madison did a little acting the UNO coaches did a little lobbying. He sat on bottom for two periods though. That is dang close to six wins. I realize some other matches could have gone the other way too, but FHSU is right there on the hip. I'm saying FHSU wins the next two duals, wins the RMAC, and finishes in the Top 5 at the National Tourney. This is a tough team with 5 legit AA candidates and two others that have potential to put themselves there. Rencountre wrestled like a beast. I thought the ref's in that match were hoping for a game of pattycake. Let the men wrestle, it's college. Grinding in a forearm from the top position is being mean, not illegal. What a nasty lateral Chase threw on him!

Overall great performance by a team not many gave a chance.

The thing about nationals is you can get help from other teams, or they can hurt you too. Just depends and that is what makes it hard to predict a top 5 finish for FHSU. It will come down to how many are still alive after the first day. For team like UNO they could have it all wrapped up at the end of Day 1 because they really don't need a lot of help. FHSU will need 5-7 alive and kickin' on the championship side to go Top 5. It will depend on what type of job their "Non-studs" do that first day.

It is down right amazing how many times UNO wins those type of 3-2 matches you describe. Mix those in with the almost always bonus points they get at 133, 141, 149, 157, 174, 197 and they become hard to beat. Look at yesterday for example. Bonus points at 133, 141,174, 197 add in those close wins like at 149 and 285 and they become hard to beat. 125, 157 & 184 were according to the rankings all upsets and it is hard to depend on upsets to win a dual. That is why in a national tournament format other teams helping beat the top team can boost a team like FHSU up to a Top 5, if they also help themselves.

#1 UNO 28, #15 Fort Hays State 12
125 - #4 Tommy Edgmon dec. #2 Terrell McKinney, 3-1 FHSU 3-0
133 - #2 Cody Garcia by fall Travis Kuhn, 1:59 UNO 6-3
141 - #3 Mario Morgan maj. dec. Aldon Isenberg, 17-8 UNO 10-3
149 - #3 Esai Dominguez dec. Levi Younkin, 3-2 UNO 13-3
157 - #4 Danny Grater dec. #2 George Ivanov, 3-2 UNO 13-6
165 - #7 Blake Malloy dec. Nathan Sigman, 2-1 UNO 13-9
174 - #2 Aaron Denson by fall Shawn Kuhlman, 1:11 UNO 19-9
184 - Chance Rencountre dec. #4 Austin Boehm, 13-9 UNO 19-12
197 - #1 Jacob Marrs by fall Steven Kyler, 1:52 UNO 25-12
285 - #2 Elijah Madison dec. Justin Glenn, 5-2 UNO 28-12

And since you mentioned the refs, were they all college refs or were some h.s. refs mixing in some college for the day? Seemed like a lot of uncertain issues on out of bounds, stalling and stalemates.
