I was able to confirm that Ryan Kincaid of Bishop Miege HS is listed as signing to play football next year at Fort Scott Community College. Ryan took 5th place at 285 5A State in 2010 and was a qualifier in 2009. Ryan was also a member of this year's Bishop Miege State Championship football team.

I was also able to confirm from the Missouri Valley head coach that Pat Cervantes of Bishop Miege HS has sign to wrestle next year at Missouri Valley College. Pat is a three time state qualifier including this year with a 31-9 record. Pat also was second in Juniors at Kansas State Greco and third in Freestyle this year.

The Missouri Valley College head coach confirmed with me also that Vance Oliver of Winfield HS and Kash Biddle of Ark City HS have also signed with Missouri Valley College.

Vance Oliver of Winfield HS is a two time state finalist placing second at State both in 2009 and 2010. Vance finished the year ranked 5th All Class at 140 in Chief Renegade's final rankings. He will be wrestling next year at Missouri Valley College.

Kash Biddle of Ark City HS is a four time state placer. He was fourth in 2007 as a freshman and 2008 as a sophomore. His junior year he was a state finalist placing second and he topped that with a state championship this year as a senior. Kash finished the year ranked 3rd All Class in Chief Renegade's final rankings. Kash will also be wrestling next year at Missouri Valley College.

I have not received confirmation yet on Nick Pearch.

Congratulations to all of you. Good luck to you in your academics and wrestling next year.

Cale Karigan of Paola High School has signed to play football next season at Pittsburg State University. Congratulations to Cale and good luck next year in your academics and fooball at Pittsburg State. Cale is a multi-sport athlete. Here is what one of his wrestling coaches Tony Brummer had to say about Cale's high school athletic career.

Quote:
Cale Karigan placed 6th at 285 in 4a from Paola. He never wrestled until he was a junior (he missed some weekend tournmaents on football recruiting trips). He also just placed 3rd in Shot Put and 4th in Discus at the 4a track meet (1 year of track). Cale played baseball his first 3 years of high school. He has signed to play football with Pitt St. next year.

Levi Schneider of Ellsworth signed a letter of intent to play football at Hutch. Levi qualified for state as a sophomore placing 6th that year (I believe) and again as a senior placing 2nd in a very close loss to Danny Floyd of Osborne in arguably one of the best matches in Hays at 321A tournament.

There are two more Baker University signees to report from Ottawa High School:

Quote:
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - Two more wrestlers have been added to a team that is already loaded for the 2010-11 campaign.

Elias Parenti (Ottawa, Kan.) comes to Baker as a Kansas State qualifier, Runner-up Kansas State freestyle and three-time honor student during his career at Ottawa High School.

Fellow teammate Chris Coover (Ottawa, Kan.) brings the experience of a three-time Kansas State qualifier, Two-time Kansas State placer, and two-time captain of the Ottawa High School wrestling team.

"I'm proud to have these two great student-athletes join our team, they will be a great addition to our school," stated head wrestling coach Jimmy May.

Please let me know if any of the above information is incorrect and needs to be changed or if any additions or deletions need to be made to the above list. On additions it helps if I receive a confirmation by posting or private message from the wrestler, a parent, high school coach or college coach. Also it helps if I can get any accomplishments like state championships, state placing or qualifying, league titles so I can make special mention of that in the announcement with the listing. A link to a newspaper article of the signing is also a good confirmation source. Thank you

Dana College closing after 126 years
By TIMBERLY ROSS

Colleges in Nebraska and Iowa have agreed to take in students left in limbo in the wake of Dana College's sudden decision to close its doors.

The 126-year-old private college announced the closure late Wednesday, citing the Higher Learning Commission's refusal to back its sale to a group of investors. The commission would not transfer accreditation to the group of investors that announced plans to buy the school in Blair.

Dana officials were making arrangements Thursday to help its 600 to 650 full- and part-time students transfer elsewhere. More than a dozen schools, including the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa, agreed to accommodate them. Dana advisers were to meet with students next week.

"This is unfortunate news for these students and we hope all are able to continue their plans for higher education," said Juan Franco, UNL's vice chancellor for student affairs.

UNL agreed to waive its May 1 deadline for applications for fall semester for Dana students and help them enroll for housing and student aid.

Concordia University in Seward said it would match all Dana scholarships and had set up a hot line for students to reach admissions counselors over the Fourth of July holiday.

Several schools were also reaching out to faculty and staff. Dana spokeswoman Nikki Kinsey said schools were forwarding information about job openings to the college's roughly 130 employees.

A date for the closure has not been decided. Kinsey said the college was expected to be officially closed by July 31. It was unclear whether employees would be paid for any work in July, she said.

Dana's summer classes had been scheduled to run through July 28. Kinsey said a decision on whether those classes would continue would be made on a course-by-course basis.

The future of the campus was still being assessed, Kinsey said.

College officials announced in March that the Dana Education Corporation -- a group of investors and an unnamed private equity firm -- had agreed to buy the school. Terms of the deal, which was expected to close this summer, were not disclosed.

Dana has experienced financial problems and ran significant deficits for several years, and the announcement of a sale came after officials spent the past year evaluating their options.

Dana Education Corporation president Raj Kaji said his group was saddened by the commission's accreditation decision, which college officials called "inaccurate, unfair and based on speculation and information not included in the required change of control request."

Commission spokeswoman Susan Van Kollenburg said Thursday that the sale did not meet the commission policy's for school sales. She declined to elaborate.

The commission policy requires five things for sales: extension of the college's mission and educational programs; continuation of the college's historic affiliation with the commission in regard to its mission and objectives; likelihood that the college will continue to meet accreditation requirements; money to complete the sale; and the new owner's experience in higher education.

Van Kollenburg said the commission's decision leaves room for Dana to submit a new plan for the future. The college's accreditation continues until November if it doesn't close, she said.

Dana college was founded by Danes and has ties to the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Dana officials and the investors who had planned to buy the college had said they didn't plan big staff or program changes. Kaji, who previously served as an administrator at the online Walden University, had envisioned doubling enrollment and expanding study-abroad options

Dana to help students transfer

BLAIR, Neb. -- Dana College is closing its doors after 126 years - leaving more than 500 students without a school and dozens of professors without jobs only weeks before the start of the school year.

School officials announced the closing Wednesday night.

They blamed it on an accrediting body's decision earlier in the day not to reaccredit Dana if officials completed a planned sale of the college to a group of out-of-state investors.

On Thursday morning, they announced a series of student advising sessions, to be held at Dana next week, to ease transfers to the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Fremont’s Midland Lutheran College and other nearby schools.

Also Thursday, Midland’s president confirmed that he has offered 90-day contracts to each of Dana’s 18 head athletic coaches, as part of Midland’s plan to bring in as many Dana students, professors and coaches as possible.

In Blair, the campus community expressed shock, disbelief and a fair amount of anger that Dana was closing, particularly because school officials had portrayed the college as sound when they announced the school’s proposed sale in March.

“It kind of just feels we were lied to,” said Bo Darrow, 19, of Glenwood, Iowa, who expected to start his sophomore year as a secondary education major in August.

“When the corporation took over, they said everything was going to be fine ... now about a month before school starts, we don't even have a school anymore.”

The college did say it has cooperative agreements with the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Grandview University in Des Moines. It wasn't immediately clear how those schools would assist students interested in transferring.

Ben Sasse, president of Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, said his school would soon announce a plan to bring in Dana students and potentially some faculty members and staff.

College officials said more information for students would be posted on the college's website, dana.edu, as it became available.

Dana College, a private liberal arts school, was founded in 1884 by Danish Lutheran pioneers. It is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.

The college made history this year when it became the first nonprofit college or university in Nebraska history to attempt the plunge into for-profit education.

Raj Kaji, CEO of the outside investment group planning to buy the school, told faculty, staff and students in March that he was planning to double enrollment while keeping Dana's longtime mission and campus intact.

“In 20 or 30 years, I will be able to say I helped move a college forward, save jobs and ensure consistent outcomes for students,” he said that day.

Those plans were sidetracked Wednesday by the Higher Learning Commission, Dana's accrediting body.

In a move that surprised the college's president and board, the commission said it wouldn't extend accreditation if the college were sold to the for-profit group.

The HLC cited numerous concerns relating to the investment group's lack of experience, the school's financial solvency and changes to the college's core liberal arts mission.

Without accreditation, Dana students wouldn't have been able to obtain federal financial aid and other benefits commonly needed for a college to remain open.

“We are devastated that despite meeting all requests and assiduously working to meet all requirements, the (HLC) decision does not allow for Dana's continuing operation,” said Dennis Gethmann, chairman of Dana's board of regents.

Marshall Hill, director of the Nebraska Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education, said a number of factors have long worked against Dana.

Many small, private liberal arts schools have been wounded by for-profit universities that teach only popular academic majors and spend millions annually on advertising, Hill said. And Dana hadn't changed to survive like other private colleges in the state.

Hill said he was surprised to learn during the reaccreditation process that the college had few online classes and lacked amenities, like extended cafeteria hours, that other schools long ago adopted.

The college also resisted pleas, from former donor Howard Hawks and others, to consolidate or more closely cooperate with Midland, another private Lutheran-affiliated school in nearby Fremont.

“I think Dana was just bled to death,” Hill said. “They just had no money for the kinds of investments in the sort of recruiting and advancements that they needed to survive.”

Vern Wirka, assistant professor of communication, said the closing leaves faculty members in the lurch. It's too late to get hired at another college for the coming school year.

“Maybe the spring semester somewhere, but the fall semester definitely not,” Wirka said.

Wirka, director of the campus radio and TV stations, wondered what he will do Thursday morning. Should he shut off the radio station? Contact the station's employees and deliver the bad news?

Jim Realph, Blair mayor, said many in town knew of Dana's struggles but few knew the extent of the college's financial problems.

The city has long benefited from the college's ability to employ hundreds of faculty and staff, he said, and the graduation of thousands of students, many of whom stayed in the city and became business and civic leaders.

“We've had companies who located here because of our college,” Realph said. “This is a tremendous, tremendous loss.”
