I thought I'd start a thread for this years middle school wrestling. It'll give people a chance to post a schedule, results, or keep up on certain kids or teams. In my experience the middle school wrestling season isn't always as competitive as some of the USA wrestling kids events, but it's still wrestling and I had a blast watching last year. Good luck to everyone this year!

Bronson,

If you keep this thread alive, I won't have to call you so much. Best of luck to Tristan and the rest of the South Jr High team.

By the way, Coach Beltch was the LHS varsity coach when I was helping coach the Lawrence Junior Wrestling Club back in the late '80s while in my undergrad years at KU. He is a great guy, and I am glad he was an assistant coach for South last year in Garrett's final Jr High season. Funny thing is, my wife was a manager for the wrestling team when Coach Beltch was there in the mid '80s and two of her brothers wrestled for him as well.

I am sure I'll be blowing up your phone anyway to see how Garret's doing! I'll try and keep the post alive best I can. We're going to have to get u better at texting now that Garrets in HS. Get you in the loop of the growing Lawrence wrestling family sending out play by play text msgs of all our kids matches. I'll put you on my list as long as you put me on yours!

If I start texting, I am going to have to take my new reading glasses everywhere I go. I might also need to have reduction surgery to my fat fingers.

I know a post from another middle school topic, from KC piper I believe, spoke about not having a middle school program, which is unfortunate. In my son's first year in MS last year we had a blast. He got to represent his school and got around 20 some matches. They weren't always the toughest nmatches, I think he met three to four good kids who were club kids, but the mat time was invaluable. In the end I think it kinda hurt his kids club season for the year, but at the same time taught him valuable lessons concerning the "team" concept. I know he was also pretty fired up when LHS varsity showed up at the city duals to watch the finals, knowing he wanted to wrestle beside some of them in the upcoming years. I also like the fact that some of these MS kids don't always get the opportunity to wrestle unless they are introduced to wrestling during MS. I know of a 1st year 8th grader last year who loved it. Made his family drive him to Baker every week and me to Purler once a week. I was going anyway! Good luck everyone this MS season and we'll see you at kids season too!

That Lawrence South JH schedule is over-loaded with events and points. Do they split up their squad? Or just try to manage each individuals points? KSHAA rules state: "No student shall participate in more than 8 events and no more than 18 competition points during a season" They have 9 events and 24 points. I'm guessing they have a lot of kids and they don't all compete at every event.

I was told the schedule was just preliminary and I know some of the schools don't have MS wrestling this year. I know some of our schedule didn't match up with some of the others MS schedule. I don't think anyone's trying to get over on anyone. MS season is a lot laid back more then kids and we enjoy our time within it and it's rules.

I am glad they don't keep track of points during the USA and AAU kids season because my boy would have been way over. I keep track of how he's feeling and his mental state and we talk about it and monitor it. We back off when he needs to.

Good luck to those wrestling during MS this year and those just wrestling national tournaments!

Just curious which of these Jr High Programs is the toughest. I imagine Mill Valley is pretty tough based on their Kid's program, as well as Rossville and possibly Wamego. I wrestled against Marysville back in the day and they were pretty solid, but haven't kept up with that part of the state much since moving away from Belleville in 1980. I have seen Clay Center in the Kid's Fed and they have a great (and rabid) program.

I think it is truly difficult to say which program is the toughest. In Jr High you get a large group of kids that are entering their first or 2nd year at attempting the sport...with a small number of Fed Kids scattered thru out. Holton is looking pretty good with Lucas Lovvorn, Mason Baum, Nathan Shields, Jordan Booth, Hunter Howerton, Justin Pool and Justin Rieschick leading the way as veteran kids wrestlers...and I am probably forgetting a couple as I don't have the list infront of me at the moment.
Looking forward the to season! First matches coming up on Thursday!

I know that Holton does a fine job with their Kid's program, and I knew that their Jr High team is one of the tougher ones on this schedule, if not the toughest. Garrett wrestled Lovvorn at MS State and Hunter Price at Subs last year, and had Rieschick in his bracket at MS State as well.

Look out! Found out today that Danny Grater is the Head Coach at Riley County Jr/Sr High! Give him time and this program will be tough!

Every wrestler has a target on them once they step on the mat. If their parents have a problem with that, they should probably have them participate in a different venue.

No weights...we'll just have to wait and see where they are...I figure if I post a weight on here someone will have some type of fit.
I am glad to see that Holton has kept its numbers up...looked at the roster yesterday and it appears that we may have more like 35 kids out right now...lots of new kids trying the sport out! I think its a great opportunity in Jr High for the kids to get to experience all the sports venues. Hope the kids have fun and learn to love the sport in the process!

That's a good core that will have Holton HS competitive for awhile. A couple of those kids have definitely given me gray hairs coaching against them. Good kids too! Good luck guys smile
