I wasn't the one videoing back in 2008 at the Rocky Welton either but it is a bullshirt rule for sure. No one has the balls to get anything changed over in Topeka. I can't believe someone even had the gumption to enforce a rule that is surely broken at every tournament of the season.

Football teams can only exchange video on verbal or written agreement. Even then it has to be stated what games are being shared. A football team cannot go to another game and videotape. Likewise, during halftime, a football team may not review videotape of a game. You can look at photo stills only. I think it is the same across the board in all levels of football.

I am curious why it is "bullshirt" rule.

Will,

I disagree with you on this being a bs rule, there has to be some honor and integrity in the sport. Just because you can get away with it does not make it right.

Every time you walk into a store or even most store parking lots, you are being taped. It is time the rules change to meet the changing times. With video taping devices getting smaller and smaller its going to become impossible to stop. And, if videoing one of your wrestlors allows another to take advantage of a weakness, won't it ultimatley make your wrestlor better?? To be good enough that one of your opponents would tape you is a huge compliment.

No, you are doing what we all should be doing, because it is very valuable to be able to review your kids' matches, and show him little mistakes and opportunities.

Keep it up, you will see the results.

Good work

We video all the matches our wrestlers compete in, I post them on a secure site for them to review. We do not however, video matches of other wrestlers whom our wrestlers are not competing against in an effort to get an edge.

Whether you think a rule is nonsense or not, it is still a rule so no reviewing of videotaping of matches on the day of competition.

The rule that needs to be changed is not this one. It is the 5 match limit rule that needs to be changed.

The point is that we can't just arbitrarily follow the rules we want and ignore the rules we don't like no matter how passionately we disagree with the rule or rules. That is a discussion for future changes, not for the year of competition we have already started.

The rule is basically unknown to most and unenforceable. How many cameras are in the gym during the finals? How many cell phones with video capability? This rule is being violated EVERY weekend. I have said it before and I will say it again, I will post all matches I have on tape and I hope that everyone reviews them because it will raise the level of ability across the board. Coaches that don't want to abolish this rule must be too lazy to use tape to analyze matches. What other possible reason could you have? I would be curious to see what other states do. badgerstatewrestling.com, youtube, flowrestling all have matches posted. There are matches of Ryne posted that were not filmed by me or his opponent at a KSHSAA event but I am not whining. It is stupid. I didn't see any of the 700 plus viewers of last year's Bobcat Classic finals on here whining about getting to watch the matches. The rule will NEVER get changed because Rick and Gary are allergic to change! If they don't want to change a STUPID rule we have to just break it and not worry about it or we will be stuck in the 70's forever. Heck, we use old geezer officials who cannot keep up with the pace of the match when we have a plethora of young talent waiting out there and we are worried about video taping?! Lets focus on a problem that matters.

We have to change in Kansas! When we do we will start creating more top talent and push more kids to that next level. It does start with our governing body and their ability to listen, adapt, and change.

Your loss. You don't think that EVERY college coach in the country doesn't review video of their opponents? It is about an edge but it is also about learning to push yourself to do new things that others are using. There are 10,000 videos of high school wrestlers available for ANYONE to view. The first thing I do when I know we have a big match is search all of the opponents on Google to see what I can find out. It is called scouting and there is NOTHING wrong with it. We can continue to live in the dark ages or we can choose to do something about it. I already know where you stand.

When your wrestlers are reviewing those matches, do you tell them to disregard studying the tendencies of those opponents? If someone does video other wrestlers that they will never meet on the mat, what is the harm? What added advantage is there? It is a learning tool. Our elite wrestlers have something to teach the vast majority. What is everybody afraid of?

Paranoia! This rule is old fashioned and is nearly impossible to implement since nearly every person at a tournament has the capability to video with phone gadgets. Due to Flos awesome coverage of MO wrestlers at the KC Classic this past weekend they all should be at a huge disadvantage the remainder of the season. Given, the videos are on FLO for all to see and take advantage of.

Just like the poster stated above, I often google every opponent in a bracket to find videos, newspaper articles, and results. Not sure I have ever gained much from all of that research other than peace of mind.

IMO, the video in wrestling informs tendencies of an opponent or the go to wrestling move. Awareness of style/tendency doesn't automatically equate to an advantage. A wrestler who has perfected a sweep single, will find a way to get that TD regardless of how many times you have seen it on video or in person for that matter. Awareness allows the opponent not to walk into it the first 10 seconds of the match and forces the sweep expert to be innovative in accomoplishing the go to. How many times have you told your wrestler to watch for the sweep or any other wrestling move, olny to see her get taken down seconds later by the dreaded sweep? Happens all the time.

I would love to hear what the fears really are. So lets hear it...what advantage is gained with the video tape?

There are two strands to this conversation. One is the taping of opponents your wrestler is not wrestling and the other is reviewing match tape on the day of competition, both are against the rules. There is nothing to argue about there. Also, because the rule is supposedly unknown to most does not mean that those who know the rule can violate it.

I never said what my opinion of the rule is, I did say, however, that we can't just choose which rules to follow and which rules not to follow whether you think the rules are stupid or not. You can review match tape after the day of competition and analyze it all you want.

Advancing the sport and learning from our mistakes are both important and I think everyone wants that. Teaching our kids that when we don't like rules we just break them is not something that I am interested in doing.

But are you interested in getting rid of the rule?

I see no purpose of reviewing tape the same day as the competition. I have no problem with broadcasting finals matches as that is a promotion of the sport and the matches are the last of that competition time period anyway. Taping of other teams during a competition seems a little unnecessary.

What is lost here is that you can review tape, there is just procedure as to when you are reviewing the tape of your wrestlers' matches.

I still stand by the fact that we cannot teach our kids to disregard rules because we don't like them.

Can't wait to get back from break and get back to wrestling!

While at Baker University open tournament I observed two different college coaches filming matches that did not involve their athletes. I thought about asking them if that was legal in NAIA, but they were bigger than me and I didnt want to get bounced.
