"highly entertaining" is an interesting choice of words to describe this match.

Easy headlockermom. I remember Dylan using an illegal choke hold on the kid from Pratt at the Douglass tourny. The kid was unconscious. I was setting right by the mat. I have seen Dylan use his famous inside headlock on several wrestlers and choke them and not get called. It happens. Except it. I believe the Pratt kid had to get medical help afterward also. I don't have anything against Dylan he is a very good wrestler. He just met someone who is as strong as he is and wasn't ready for it. Delancy ought to be considered for a top 10 all class ranking.

Delancey is already ranked in All-Class.

My mistake. I haven't looked at that weight in a while.

It is Gentzler

Whoops. Typo. Good eye Richard. My apologies to the Gentzler family. I don't want them to come up and beat me up. I got a family to support! ;-)

Andover Central dominates Augusta Invitational

By SCOTT ELPERS

The Andover Central wrestling team continued its successful run through the season with a first place finish at the Augusta Invitational on Saturday.

The Jaguars had six wresters take home first place honors, four more than second place finisher, Kapaun Mount Carmel.

“We had some kids step up and place first for the first time this season. That was big for us,” Andover Central coach Terry Alley said. “For the finals, you couldn’t ask for much better. You’d like to win them all but we won our share of them.”

Andover went 6-for-8 in the championship round. Zac Gentzler (103 pounds), Luke Lee (135 pounds), Jake Umscheid (140 pounds), Alex Bontz (145 pounds), Josh Miller (152 pounds) and Matt Henrikson (285 pounds) all took home championship medals.

Gentzler improved his season record to 15-0 with a wins over Augusta’s Tyler Hildibrand, Southeast’s Devante Smith and Kapaun’s Parker Howell.

“Hopefully he can keep that going,” Alley said. “He is a little machine on his feet and he’s turning into a pretty good pinner also.”

Bontz kept his perfect 15-0 record intact with wins over Newton’s Cody Spencer, Smoky Valley’s Jake Johnson and Augusta’s Nick Collins.

Tied at 1-1 against Collins in the championship match, Bontz was able to pull away in overtime with a 3-1 victory.

“That was the most exciting match of the night,” Alley said. “Both him and Collins had great scrambles. I think they will both be in the state finals.”

One setback for Andover Central came in the 130-pound weight class. Two-time Class 5A state champion Jake Genztler suffered a rare loss against Columbus’ Kyle Johnson in the championship match.

The loss was the first of the season for Gentzler and just the 11th of his varsity career.

“We knew it was going to be a battle. It was really going to come down to whoever scored the first point. Kyle did that,” Alley said. “You face that caliber of wrestler and that’s tough to overcome.”

Johnson looked like he had the chance for the pin late in the second period, but Gentzler found his way out. Johnson still got the points to give him some cushion going into the final round.

“I couldn’t believe I got him in that move,” Johnson said. “I knew he wasn’t cutting very much weight and I knew I was a little stronger than he was. I knew if he tried to do anything I could probably toss him over.”

Gentzler couldn’t gain any ground in the third period. Johnson held on to win 6-2 and was named Most Valuable Wrestler at tournament.

Bruised, bloodied and with a face a red as his school colors, a smiling Johnson admitted defeating Gentzler was a rare feat.

“It doesn’t happen very often. I’ve seen him wrestle quite a bit and he’s pretty good.” Johnson said, “But I’ve been working hard all week. I’ve been waiting for today since the beginning of the season.”

Is this the Gentzler that was an undefeated state champ last year?

No!

thanks Richard. here's some further clarification dwelsh, this is the Gentzler who is a 2x champ, 3x finalist. Johnson is also a 2x finalsit, 3x placer.

And let's not forget that Johnson lost in OT last year at state to Moeder, so he is certainly not just some Johnson. He is the Johnson.
Clearly though, Gentzler and Johnson are two of the best in the state regardless of weight and class.
Congratulations to both.

I saw dylan trying to use that choke in his quarterfinal match this weekend. The refs should be smart enough to recognise this and know he is not trying to perform a wrestling move and stop it. I totally love ufc and it is a ufc move. NOT wrestling

Here is that "highly entertaining" video of the 171 finals match. I thought the match was a good one. Apparently, Penka ended up with a major concussion and Delancy ended up having to see a dentist due to possible wisdom tooth or jaw being cracked.

not run from competition, did not mean it that way at all.
But there have been rumors saying that he certified at 125 and planned on moving down to that weight for state.

After watching the video of the match. It looks to me that Dylan may have lost his balance taking both of them to the mat and not a move that Delancy put on him. It was a good match. It happened so fast I don't believe the ref's knew what happened and couldn't make a call one way or another. Dylan didn't show any signs of a concusion during the match. I did see him afterwards and noticed he was shaken up. Hopefully, he is ok and returns soon. Good luck to both the rest of the year.

I disagree Top Cat. The first take down Brendan obviously picks Dylan up and takes him down after Dylan tried setting up the headlock. Dylan wasn't falling and Brendan just happened to be there to pick him up as Dylan was falling on top of him...lol Brendan and Dylan are both smart wrestlers. I think Brendan took advantage of the opportunities to take a shot when Dylan's techniques failed, and obviously Dylan took advantage of the opportunies when Brendan failed to keep him on his back. Dylan and Brendan are both very good wrestlers, I doubt Dylan would be loosing his balance and just accidently taking another ranked wrestler down during the finals and I don't think Dylan would appriciate the excuses given for him being taken down by a good wrestler.

Whatever! From what you are saying then, I must agree with headlockermom, that Brendan illegally slammed Dylan. Dylan won the match anyhow.

I am inclined to agree that Penka's choke hold could be considered illegal (especially in the instance of someone getting choked all the way out, like Baird). However, I have heard from people I consider experts that Delancy's move was perfectly legal. Delancy's move was made in response to Penka's move (trying to get him to where he could choke him out), and therefore allowable. (I dont have a rulebook or anything, but trust who told me). However, it was a really good match and I hope I get to see them wrestle again this satuday at the Kmc dual tournament.
