I know it has been discussed before, but I don't rember the answer?
Why are the age groups in Kansas wrestling not aligned with the USA wrestling age groups?

Because that would make sense and we don't want to be accused of that, now do we. We also don't follow the weight groups that USA wrestling sets up. I'm sure their is some great reason for it but I do think it is time to move that way. I know the transition would mix kids up for one year but it would all work out.

If you're talking about the September cut-off, it used to be January in Kansas as well. Many of us spent years getting it changed to the current date so that it more closely aligned kids with their own grade in school. In addition, at the time September was a cut-off used by other sports. IMO the less we do like USAW can only be a good thing for Kansas wrestling. Why would we care what date USAW or other states use? I was noticing on some other message boards that some states actually change age groups at the first of the year after a wrestler has already started the season at a lower age group. Should we follow that lead as well?

What would we care what grade a kid is in??????
We are part of the USA wrestling organization. We should use their age groups and weight classifications!

We do several things different than USAW because it is what works best for Kansas.

That still doesn't answer my question! The grade an athlete is in school has no relevance.

It has as much relevance as keeping with USAW age groups. What percentage of wrestling outside this state by our kids is done at USAW sanctioned events? What cutoff dates do the other events that are most attended by our kids use? I've seen no reason given for changing back to the January date other than that is what USAW does!

sf02 is correct ... probably 15 years ago the Kids State Body voted to move the determining birth date to January 1. That lasted 2 years max and an overwhelming majority voted to move it back!
Are you making a POSITIVE difference in the life of kids?
