Don't think this is much of a surprise to most of us "out here."
The numbers in Saturday's tournament were lower than they could have been due to illness and injury, but many "out here" were of the opinion that the new weight classes would make it harder to have full teams, esp. at the upper end.

106 had SIX
126 had SEVEN
132 had SEVEN
145 had SEVEN
152 had SEVEN

The largest brackets were at 120 and 138 having 10. It was not only the upper weights that had a bad showing Saturday.

Don't know if the new weight classes will prove out to be a good thing or not, but it has turned 126 into a slobber knocker most weekends. I don't feel that would be the case if there was a 130lb class. I'm not close enough to the 195 lb class to tell the impact. Here's how some of the big tournaments have shaken out in the difference in weights. 1st two obviously before the break:
Tournament# Schools 126’s 195’s
Emporia 19 16 13
JoCo 21 18 12
Beloit 21 12 15
Husky 19 17 12
Hays 21 14 13
Baldwin 15 11 13
Garden City 28 20 16

Not sure it's the weight classes causing the lack of full teams or if it's a matter of support for wrestling from some school administrations causing it. But that's a whole different thread!

Not saying the upper weights were the only weight classes that were light on Saturday; anyone who read the brackets can see that. What I am saying is that being light in the upper weights had been an expected consequence of the change in the weight classes.

Again, there were injuries and illness that kept some from wrestling Saturday in many of the weight classes. Many of the teams out here are not full and/or do not have a #2 if the #1 is unable to go.

Mr. Paxton,

". . . causing the lack of full teams or if it's a matter of support for wrestling from some school administrations." I do not know what is going on where you live, but I puh-ritty sure this is not generally the case in the NWKL and MCL.

I am curious, short of terminating a program altogether, what does a "lack of administrative support" look like and how does it keep kids from going out for wrestling?

First off I can not speak about any other school administration other than my own. I don't want to high-jack this thread with that so I will start a new one in a bit in which I would love to receive any and all advice anyone would have for us.

What I was trying to show was that over a 6 week period in tournaments across the state the situation is pretty much the same. Out of the 7 tournaments 144 schools were represented there were 36 opens at 126 and 50 opens at 195. Neither number is good.
I agree with Mr. Mann's last 2 sentences, there are a lot of injuries and illnesses right now, we had 4 open weights this weekend, what frustrates me is his last sentence, "Many of the teams out here are not fulland/or do not have a #2 if the #1 is unable to go."
We certainly are in that situation and based off off having duals scheduled where there have been up to 6 opens and one cancelled due to not enough wrestlers I would say perhaps many more are in that same boat.
Hopefully overall we are the exception and not the rule.

I did some math. Took # of participants for each class x legal weight and came up with this.

Bottom 4 weight classes had 2740 lbs of wrestlers.
Top 4 had 4745 lbs of wrestlers.

Summation - there was a ton more rasslen goen on in the upper weights.

What does this really mean - not a thing.
Its like having only 3 wrestlers at 195 in a tournament... It doesnt mean we need a 98lb weight class....
