The rankings are hard enough when results are turned in! We have NO results from:

The GWAL was canceled due to weather and rescheduled for this Saturday coming up. 2-11-2012.
Keep up the great work on the rankings, we truly appreciate the level of commitment you put into the rankings and how they promote the sport of wrestling in Kansas.

THE CAPITAL-JOURNAL

SILVER LAKE — With 39 matches under his belt this season, it hardly seems right to say that Rossville’s Mark Smith may have been rusty for his 152-pound title match Saturday at the Silver Lake Invitational.

But that very well could have been the case.

“I really hadn’t been on the mat much today,” said Smith, who had two matches to reach the finals against Seaman’s Dylan Kadous. “I wasn’t ready for a really tough match, but I also knew he wasn’t going to be an easy kid to beat.”

Smith may not have been fully prepared for the battle Kadous gave him, but he survived it. A takedown with 13 seconds left in the third period broke a 1-1 deadlock and Smith held on for the 3-1 victory.

“I went out and did what I had to do to get it done,” said Smith, who improved to 34-5 with the title. “It was a bunch of bumping around. I really didn’t know what he was going to try. I was trying to work in my offense and make sure he couldn’t get his in. In doing that, we both really kind of canceled each other out and couldn’t accomplish much."

As a two-time state placer in Class 3-1A, including fourth at 152 last year, Smith’s glossy mark this year shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. But getting there hasn’t been quite the same this season.

Last year, Smith had Sheldon Graves (state champion at 145), Kiefer Hurla (third at 140) and Tagen Lambotte (state champ at 135) pushing him every day in practice. Graves and Hurla graduated, and Lambotte has been nursing a shoulder injury for most of the last month, leaving Smith with limited workout partners to keep him sharp.

“We’ve had our challenges — I don’t know the last time we’ve had a full roster — and that definitely has an impact at practice time because we don’t have everybody in there pushing each other. It’s only a select few, and we try to get as much done as possible.

“I don’t feel like it’s truly affected me, but I notice a difference not having the same practice partners pushing me every day like I used to have. It’s made a difference.”

Lambotte did wrestle Saturday, making the finals at 145 before defaulting with his shoulder injury to Louisburg’s Austin Caskey.

The Silver Lake title was the first for Smith. Likewise, Chase County’s Trey Francka returned to the top of the podium after a one-year absence. A champion at 103 in 2010, Francka was denied a second straight Silver Lake crown last year with a 10-2 loss to Salina South’s Javier Vieyra in last year’s finals.

The Bulldog junior wasn’t going to be denied this year. He needed a short time to get his first takedown against St. James Academy's Reese Cokeley in the finals and built a 4-1 lead by the end of the first period.

Cokeley managed only one more point the rest of the match and Francka wound up with a dominating 17-2 technical fall win that helped him earn oustanding wrestler honors at the meet.

“I thought it was going to be a pretty good match,” said Francka, who improved to 29-1 on the season. “He’s got a big brother, Ryne, who was a four-time state champion, so I thought it would be tougher. I just used my legs a lot to scissor him, work him over and do whatever I could to get back points.”

Seaman put four wrestlers in the finals but couldn’t secure a champion until Dylan Hall won the last match of the day. Last year, the heavyweight delivered a pin in the third-place match that gave the Vikings the team title at the meet.

Hall delivered another pin this year, sticking St. James’ Darin Feist with 27 seconds left in the first period. It just salvaged an otherwise tough finals for Seaman, which wound up fourth with 134 points.

“I knew we hadn’t come away with the outcomes we wanted and I wanted to finish the tournament off well for us,” Hall said. “I love watching my teammates wrestle and win. Seeing them lose just got me more fired up.”

Bryant Guillen and Nathan Stanley also made the finals for the Vikings. Guillen dropped a 10-4 decision to Clay Center’s Gavin Grater in the 160 final, and Stanley fell 4-2 in overtime at 195 to Leavenworth's Jacob Roberson.

Wamego’s Kyle Wilson was the only other area winner, easily handling Baldwin's Andrew Morgan 7-0 in the 132 final.

St. James, which placed five in the finals and had one champion (Zak Hensley at 113), won the meet with 1681/2 points.

South wrestlers sweep City Duals

Groundhog Day provided the perfect setting for Olathe South’s wrestling team to snatch its first city wrestling championship in seven seasons.

The Falcons bolted to big leads early against Olathe Northwest, Olathe North and Olathe East thanks to their strength in the lower weights then held off late challenges to sweep their way to the Olathe City Duals crown.

“We’re strong up through about 145, real strong,” first-year South coach Conor Fitzgerald said. “We’ve got some good guys in the upper weight too, but, especially in a dual format, those guys in the lower weights provide some punch right away and give us a cushion for later on in the dual.”

Opening against the Ravens, the Falcons fell behind 5-0 after the 106-pound bout, but rallied into the lead with three consecutive pins by sophomores Cameron White (113), Anthony Vicchicrelli (120) and Matt Massey (126).

Building an 18-5 advantage, South then turned to the strongest three weight classes on its roster and its core group of seniors didn’t disappoint.

Jacob Copen (132) dusted off Ian Anderson 13-4 for a major decision, while Nick Bauerly (138) and Derek Pike (145) followed with pins in pumping the lead to 34-5.

ONW actually rallied to a 35-34 lead before Spencer Sperling’s second-period pin at 220 put South in front for good.

Against the Eagles, the Falcons again broke from the gate quickly building a 24-3 lead as sophomore Ben Deaton (103), Massey, Bauerly and Pike all picked up decisions.

North also was open at 120 and Copen scored a first-period pin at 132.

The only defeat in those first seven classes came at 113, where Eagles freshman Nick Haug outlasted Bailey Yetmar 4-3, but Pike later edged Michael Wurts 6-5 in the 145-pound bout – another critical toss-up that determined the final.

Once again, however, South failed to hold that lead as consecutive pins by seniors Gage Smoots (152) and Rory Haug (160) and junior Tobias Popchoke (170) and the Falcons’ open weight at 182 allowed North to edge in front 27-23.

Senior Nick Ryba won his match at 195 by injury default before Sperling scored another pin, allowing South to soar away with a 35-33 win.

The Falcons capped the evening by bolting to a 32-4 lead versus the host Hawks then gutting out a 37-31 victory when Olathe East senior Aaron Melchionne suffered a knee injury in the heavyweight bout and could not continue.

“It’s a great feeling,” Bauerly said. “We were talking before the duals about how great it would be to finally win a city championship, because none of us had won before. It’s just awesome.”

The Hawks were open at 106 and led 18-0 after White and Yetmar scored second-period pins.

“Two weeks ago at the Blue Valley Northwest Classic, the match was going good until he caught me and pinned me,” Yetmar said. “I told coach, ‘I want him again.’ When it came down to it today, it was do or die.”

Jonathan Diaz momentarily staunched the bleeding with a 15-5 major decision against Massey at 126, but Copen followed with another pin followed by Baurley’s 15-2 major decision and a 15-1 major decision by Pike that buried the Hawks in a huge hole.

East managed to climb out of it highlighted by John Blazevic’s 1-0 win against Ryba wrestling up a weight class and senior Myron Tipton’s second-period pin – his third win by fall on the night.

Tied at 31-31 entering the heavyweight match, there was still no score when Melchionne collapsed with a knee injury against South’s Carlos Ramirez and was unable to resume the match.

Olathe Northwest, which won the city title for the first time last season, finished second after knocking off East 33-32 and topping North 39-33.

Broc Bowman’s overtime win in the heavyweight class capped the Ravens’ rally from a 20-12 deficit midway through the dual with the Hawks.

But the key match was probably Taylor Brashear’s 2-1 win against Blazevic as he scored two points in the final 11 seconds of the third period.

Ian Anderson (132), Eric Haynes (152) and Conner Middleton (160) had pins for ONW in beating the Hawks.

Middleton bested Rory Haug 10-8 in one of the night’s premier matchups during the Ravens’ win against the Eagles.

The Hawks snagged third place by edging the Eagles 41-32 led by Diaz’s technical fall and pins by Ryan Brennan (132), Dylan Duman (138), Branden Trinkle (145), Anthony Koehler (160) and Tipton.

SM Northwest finishes fifth at district

The Cougars wrestling team came up short at the district duals meet Friday at Shawnee Mission North High School.

SM Northwest dropped all four of its meets. The district champion, SM South, finished 4-0 and one spot ahead of SM East (3-1). Hosts SM North finished just above SM Northwest with a 1-3 record.

Against SM East in a 45-24 loss, SM Northwest's Matt Vanausdall defeated Grant Hollingsworth in a 1-0 decision at 119 pounds. At 125 pounds, Ross Whitmore gave the Cougars another victory when he pinned Tommy McGillicuddy. The team's only other victory — aside from a 103-pound forfeit — would come at 189 pounds when Blake Covington defeated David Hill by a 5-0 decision.
