I just looked at the brackets! Why is it some schools had multiple kids in weights in a national qualifer????
Under the current NAIA qualifier system, you can take up to 12 wrestlers in the ten weights and up to two in a weight class. A team does not have to take a wrestler in every weight class to the Regional. A team could take two wrestlers in just six weight classes to Regionals or Nationals.
You can qualify for NAIA Nationals in two ways under the current NAIA system first by placing in the top four at Regionals but you can also qualify for Nationals by placing in Open Tournaments during the year depending on the number of entrants in your weight class and what place you earn in that tournament. For example if there are 9 to 16 entrants I believe you need to place in the top four, if 17 to 24 entrants you need to place in the top six. I am not exactly sure of that place and number of entrant combination.
Even if you qualify for Nationals in a Open Tournament before Regionals you must wrestle at Regionals to be able to wrestle at the National tournament. This could leave a selection decision for the Coach if a team qualifies more than 12 wrestlers in the Open tournaments. Baker University has had to narrow its Regional selections to 12 wrestlers for the last two years in that I believe they have had at least 25 qualifiers the last two years from Open tournaments held before Regionals.
I have heard some discussion that this NAIA qualification system may change next year in that all qualification will happen at Regionals with five qualifiers per weight class from Regional placing and then 10 additional at Large Regional selections. I am not sure how those Regional selections will be made. I do hope they realign the Regions though because currently the West appears to only have 6 teams wrestling at their Regional while Baker's Central Regional had 11 teams this year.
