Plainville, seriously? Surely they can't beat the top 4A team. Are you sure about that?

What's up with KMC Howell? Why is he not back in the rankings? Saw him at the NW Dual and he looked beastly for 113. Hope he is 100% or close by this weekend as City League will be even tastier than it was already going to be.

At 182, Sandoval of Ulysses took two losses to currently ranked 321A wrestlers at the Norton Tournament. He lost to #3 Clay Cosand of Mankato and #5 Steve Yergey-Dible of Hoxie. Sandoval then lost to Yergey-Dible at the Scott City Tournament.

Cosand should probably receive consideration as he has beaten Yergey-Dible.

Other notable wins for Cosand were over returning state placer Huneke of Sabetha, #6 in 321A Hanzlick of Hoisington, #4 in 6A Rodriguez of Garden City, and three wins over #4 in 321A Malin of Plainville.

Cosand's losses are to #4 All-Class ranked Atwood of Hoxie, #5 All-Class ranked at 195 Gilliland of Plainville, #3 All-Class ranked at 170 Wuthnow of Salina Sacred Heart, #2 All-Class ranked Meck of Shawnee Heights, and #6 All-Class ranked Blair of Valley Center. He also lost to #5 in 5A O'Donnell of Salina South and #4 in 4A Brown of Colby, which might cancel things out.

But I'd also point out that O'Donnell of Salina South has lost to Yergey-Dible of Hoxie and Brown of Colby has lost to Malin of Plainville, and Cosand has wins over Yergey-Dible and Malin.

Sandoval does have some notable wins and losses that shouldn't hurt him, but his loss to Copper of Goodland, who is currently unranked, should bump him him down. Several 321A wrestlers have beaten Copper this season including Huneke of Sabetha and Yergey-Dible of Hoxie, who have both lost to Cosand.

Just something else for you to mull over at 182.

Plainville beat the top 4A team, Colby, at the Beloit Tournament.

I'm pretty sure Plainville and Colby were both at the Beloit Tournament, and Plainville won the whole thing. Now head to head in a dual I think Colby would win, but as far as I know..KS doesn't have a dual state tournament, and the rankings are based on a tournement style performance. As you know, 182 is a musical chair weight.

Certainly the #10 guy at that weight has rotated alomost from week to week. O'Donnell is a case in point, having those losses and then beating Wilson who beat Blair and majored Bradley.

120 and 182 are a LOT of fun this season!

All it means to me is that Thibault was probably ranked just a little too high and should never have been ahead of Becker in the first place as I already suggested. If Becker was undefeated, you know he would be at #2. Becker's schedule is much tougher than Gehrings or Thibaults. You can't even compare them. Both Becker's losses, very close losses in the finals at Newton and Rosehill, are to out of state wrestlers. Becker should not be punished because Derby's schedule is much tougher than Buhlers. Plus Becker had a close loss to Williams (top at 160) in the finals at state last year. It is too bad they will not meet so that my prediction could be verified. Obviously Blackwell should be #1. But again, until Becker is beaten by someone on the list he should be behind only Blackwell.

Here is where you are wrong...

Gehring has more quality wins this year and Becker's schedule is not what it appears to be.

Becker - Quality Wins:
Helms - ARK
Leeper - MH
Wilson - LIB
Watkins - COL
Mitchell - SME - In OT

Gehring - Quality Wins: Has beaten 4 in the AC Top Ten.
Fiss - HUG - 2X
S. Ortiz - WNW
Clayborn - AUG
Hoskins - STA
Younger - ELL
Watkins - COL
Ryan - SV
Thibault - HAL - Previously undefeated.

Becker went to VC Duals and had no competition at 160. He went to SMNW tourney instead of Douglas on 12/8 and it was cake. Certainly the two OK guys that beat him are good, but he lost to them both. He is absolutely one of our best 152 pounders in the state but to say that he has had much tougher competition than Gehring is just not so.

Ok Chief, if you say so, you are the Chief.

No need to argue about the toughness of the schedule because we won't get anywhere on that. The fact that Becker had to wrestle two high quality out of staters pretty much proves my point. Yes, Gehring beat Thibault, in OT I might add, but that just may only prove that Thibault was over ranked as I already stated earlier as far as I am concerned. And Thibault being undefeated doesn't mean as much as you imply as his schedule is, well.....I still say that until Becker is beaten by someone on the list or someone from Kansas, you are punishing him because he had to wrestle two kids from OK and Gehring didn't have to.

And I am not "wrong" until proven wrong. I just have a different "opinion" about this than you Chief. You say Gehring has more quality wins and I don't agree. The quality of the kids you mentioned is not as high as you indicate. I would put Jack Mitchell over every kid you listed as a quality win except for Thibault. And let's also remember that our "opinions" are vastly different as most of my opinions are based on careful observation and comparison of actual matches as my son has wrestled just about everybody I ever have an "opinion" of or they were in a bracket, whereas your opinion is based more on your gleaning of published results. But I still love you.

And we all know that Chief can't be right all the time, just maybe 90-95% of the time.

Let me say this though to all.
Becker, Gehring and Thibault are all great kids wrestling their hearts out. They are only dealing with what they can control. They don't deserve to be disrespected and I am certainly not doing that. The fact that we are even talking about them shows they are top quality and are greatly respected. If they weren't, we wouldn't even be talking about them. So don't get offended, just go wrestle. And let us old guys have a little fun talking our smack trying to blow smoke or whatever.

I must have been thinking about the element Copper, which could be used for the medal handed out for 10th place in the fictional Kansas Grand State Tournament.

My apologies to the Cooper family for the typing error. wink

at 138 Drake Hake lost to James Landoll of Marysville 5-1 at the Beloit Tournament for what it's worth...but Landoll lost to now #4 in 321a Michael Dusin of Phillipsburg

I'm pretty sure Plainville and Colby were both at the Beloit Tournament, and Plainville won the whole thing. Now head to head in a dual I think Colby would win, but as far as I know..KS doesn't have a dual state tournament, and the rankings are based on a tournement style performance. My apologies, I stand corrected. My mistake. I guess I can't be right 100% of the time either. But of course I never said one was better than the other. Frequently, 321A teams and wrestlers are under-ranked. Everyone assumes...small schools....you know... For example, the heavy weights last year - Scott City and Beloit - were way under-ranked.

No problem X, you are not the only one....

Frequently, 321A teams and wrestlers are under-ranked. Everyone assumes...small schools....you know... For example, the heavy weights last year - Scott City and Beloit - were way under-ranked.

No problem X, you are not the only one....

Thanks for saying no problem but come on Double J, you know that nobody in the know ever under-ranks or under-estimates your precious 321A teams or wrestlers, especially me. Those of us in the know, know that the classes in Kansas aren't as disparate as they are in some states. It's really just Plainville. It's not that they're 321A that's confusing and why they may be under-estimated, it's just the whole Plainville thing. Now if it was Norton or Hoxie or Scott City or even ACCHS or someone like that we were talking about, it wouldn't have been such a surprise.

So like I said, congratulations to Plainville, their wrestlers, their coaches and their fans, for having a great year and for being considered one of the "best" teams in the state, regardless of class!

Plainville was a powerhouse in the early 80's. Their coach, Tim Newman, went on to be the head coach at Univ of Nebraska for over 20 years, I believe.

One of the issues is that many of the smaller schools appear to limit their competition to other smaller schools, on a regional basis. If they do not wrestle in KC or Wichita area, then alot of people do not get to see them. How do you compare or rank someone that you have not seen on the mat and has no head-to-head matches or even common opponents?
We at Aquinas go to Hays because it is a fun trip, a well run tournament and we also get to see teams we would not otherwise see. Phillipsburg, Hoisington, Goodland, Ulysses, Hugoton, Riley County, Russell, Oakley, and the other 1-3A and 4A schools are teams we otherwise would never see. They have tough kids who bring it on the mat, and that is fun for us.
Example: Last year (2012) Oakley had an absolute stud at 160 that we did not know, and he dominated. I forgot the young man's name, but would not have seen him otherwise.
