If Alex Cavanaugh isn't under-rated, 113 is one tough weight!!!!!!

It is one of the better weights in 321A with four returning state placers who are at the top of this weight. I gave the edge to Ethan Ross at #5 over Cavanaugh for his tournament performances winning Hoxie and taking 2nd at Clay Center, but it was very close. Its too bad Silver Lake isn't going out to Norton's tournament the 1st week of January like they did last season so we could settle the #5 spot.

Looking forward Cavanaugh will get a chance for a rematch with #2 ranked Brady Lowell and a match-up with #3 ranked Josh Goepfert at the Beloit Tournament in mid-January. The week before #4 ranked John Solko and Cavanaugh could meet at St. Marys. Trey Franka will also pay a visit to Silver Lake at the beginning of February for their tournament.

Cavanaugh will get his chances to show if he belongs higher in the rankings. It should be an interesting season at 113.

I just noticed that Nick Wuthnow is at 170 now. He was at 182 earlier this year. It is refreshing to see a kid running TO the competition of Jarid Johnson and Gavin Grater. That will be an interesting weight class with those three at state.

No offense to the 182 lb kids, but Johnson and Grater are obviously two of Kansas' well known studs.

Whoever wins 170 will have earned it.

This is definitely one of the premier weights in 321A with five returning state placers and the top three finishing last season as runner-ups.

Derek Bayless and Jason Berkgren will also have a say in who wins the title at this weight as they split matches in route to 3rd and 4th place finishes respectively at 170 last year.

Should be an entertaining state tournament when the end of February rolls around.

Those results are incorrect from what I can tell. If you add up the team scores from that specific dual it would have Ochs winning by fall.

Also, Ochs won the Outstanding Upperweight Wrestler in his pool. I'm going to guess they wouldn't give that award to a wrestler who was pinned in the 1st period.

Here are Hoxie's official dual results with Scott City from Track Wrestling just in case there is any doubt.

If I read your post correctly Wyatt you ranked Ross ahead of Cavanaugh at 113 because he won two tournaments (Hoxie and CC)From what I see he did not win at CC. Cavanaugh on the other hand has won two tournaments and is undefeated!

Yes, I was wrong on Ross winning at Clay Center. I entered it in my rankings spreadsheet wrong and didn't bother to look at the tournament results to double check. However, Ross lost 3-0 against #3 ranked Josh Goepfert-12-Marysville, so that isn't a loss that should hurt him.

Cavanaugh took 2nd at Onaga this past weekend and had a 7-4 loss to #2 ranked Brady Lowell-12-Republic Co., also another "good loss".

Cavanaugh has quality wins that I know of over state qualifiers Tony Weber-11- Pleasant Ridge and Sheldon Harris-11-Wathena.

Ross has wins over state qualifier Troy Juenemann-10-Oberlin and MaCoy Rains-9-Oakley, who finished 3rd at Kid's State 14&Under 105 in 2012.

At the end of the day I view them as even at this point in terms of quality wins and losses. Ross gets the edge because he is an upperclassmen and he finished 5th in the Kid's State 106 High School Division last season. Finishing 6th at Kid's State 14&Under 100 in 2012 hurt Cavanaugh in my criteria as I view him and MaCoy Rains-9-Oakley on nearly equal footing. Rains is ranked 7th in my rankings, so that helped Ross in terms of quality wins. I also realize Cavanaugh did not get to wrestle all of his matches at Kid's State, but I still feel comfortable with the way I have this weight ranked for the time being. Cavanaugh will have his chances to improve in the rankings as he has difficult schedule ahead of him.

I hope that helps explain my reasoning, and I'm sorry I put in the wrong result for Ross at Clay Center.

1. Brandon Ball-11-Hoisington
2. Alec Hager-11-Norton
3. James Jurgens-10-Scott City
4. Daniel Melcher-12-Herington
5. Clint Rogers-11-Smith Center
6. Trevor Axelson-12-Plainville

There's not much criteria to work with but after Willy Dieckmann's weekend @ Eudora beating #4 5a and #4 6a I see him cracking this list.

Dieckmann really threw a wrench in the rankings at this weight which were already a bit of a mess.

Dieckmann had that great performance beating two ranked wrestlers from 6A and 5A, but he also lost to two ranked wrestlers from 4A at Eudora, too. Ultimately, not qualifying to state and losing to my #7 wrestler, Blake Graham-11-Pleasant Ridge, in the blood round at regionals last season kept Dieckmann at #8. All of the wrestlers ahead of Graham and Dieckmann have state medals, so they have proven success at Hays.

Not having the full George Worley/Larry Tilton Memorial Duals' results I don't know if Graham and Dieckmann met in the first week. If someone could supply the full results I would really appreciate it. When I get some results from that tournament I'll have a better idea if I can move Dieckmann up.

I also have Jacob Gentry-11-Rossville at #9. He finished 6th at Eudora and has a win over Mark Reiss of Rock Creek at Mission Valley. Then Reiss, who is now in 4A and is a returning state placer from 120 in 321A, just beat #2 Alec Hager-11-Norton at Clay Center, but Hager has wins over #3 James Jurgens-10-Scott City and #6 Trevor Axelson-12-Plainville.

Another problem is I don't know if #4 Daniel Melcher-12-Herington is at 126 this season as I have no results with him in them. He could have wrestled at Wamego, but the results for that tournament are not complete.

I need more results before I can move Dieckmann, or any other wrestlers around at this weight. What I will say is that from #2 to #10 it is very wide open at 126, but for now I will go with wrestlers who have a history of qualifying and then performing well at the state tournament.

Dieckman beat Graham handily at the Tilton/Worley tournament at Benedictine college but I do not have the exact score.

Thanks for the update. I'll see what the results look like for this week and I should be able to find a spot for Dieckmann in the next rankings.

So is Juenemann close to being ranked either or is it just a "good win" because he was a state qualifier?

Juenemann is sitting at 9th in my rankings behind MaCoy Rains-9-Oakley and Tony Weber-11-Pleasant Ridge, so he is right there in contention for a medal in my opinion.
