Wrestling Hosts Annual Blue/Gold Scrimmage

Kearney, Neb. - The top-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team began its 2012-13 season with its annual Blue/Gold Scrimmage Saturday evening in Cushing Coliseum.

The 15 matches were extremely close as there were just two falls and one major decision. The Gold team pulled out a 25-24 win as freshman Travis Leiskau (Spring, Texas) recorded a first period fall in the final bout of the night.

At 157 lbs., redshirt freshman Chase White (Lincoln H.S.), likely one of UNK's new starters this season, recorded a fall in the third period to help the Blue team open up a 15-10 lead.

Also, returning All-American heavyweight Kevin Barrett (Boys Town H.S.) managed a 10-6 win over junior Shawn Meyer (Plainview) and Seward junior Mark Fiala won 5-1 at 184 lbs. He earned All-American honors in March at 174 lbs.

Finally, nationally-ranked Matt Lenagh (Millard North H.S.) defeated Zach Anderson (Clay Center, Kans.) by a 4-3 score. Lenagh was at 184 lbs. last season.

UNK's freshmen compete in the Wyoming Cowboy Open next Saturday with everyone else taking the mats November 10th at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open at Iowa State.
