He was called for a slam in his semi vs. Yetmar. Yetmar was unable to continue, so Stovall lost that match. He was not DQ'd from the tournament.

The official made the correct call. That was the hardest slam that I have seen for a long time, maybe ever. I have seen plenty of guys hit the mat with a lot of force, but this one was different. Yetmar had no chance to cushion the blow as he was coming down backwards and the impact was directly from the back of his head to the top of his shoulders. I hope that he is well and will be able to wrestle this weekend. Bailey has earned my respect because as he has improved so much since his freshman year and when I have seen him prepare he is focused and determined. It would be a shame if this match cost him an opportunity to return to the State Tournament and compete for a medal.

It was the correct call. It appeared to have been blatant.

Mr. Chandler---First, let me say my family is very thankful Yetmar is ok and hope he is able to compete the rest of this season. I meant no disrespet with my outburst at the meet--it was directed at that ref and ref only. You have no grounds to make that "blatant" statement. Have you reviewed the tape?? I have and shown it to several coaches (3 high school-not our coaches by the way and 2 college coaches)all agreeded--although rough--not illegal. Do you know we did the same lift and return twice in this match-neither time anything called?? We've done this lift/return in 10 differnet states over the years and this first hs season--never called. You call it "blatant"in a match we were dominating and winning 7-2 (the 2 being cuts) in the third? We are going blow a chance at a league title with a "blatant" move? We did not leave feet-nor was it over the shoulder. It was a lift/return and unfortunately landed badly. I watched Ohio State-Michagn yesterday and counted 17 exact lift/returns--none called. Same move-one arm on waist-other under leg. Again we are thankful Yetmar ok, it is a rough tough sport and in heat battle things happen can't control everything.

For you to say it blatant or we needed an illegal move--then you don't know us as people or him as a wrestler. On latter half--suggest you do some trackwrestling research if you think we have to resort to such tatctics. I know work, sacrifices and time he spent training. We have no need for "blatant" or illegal moves. Any time you want to discuss in person-name time/place---here my number 913-620-4820

I am ecstatic to hear I am wrong. All I can state is what I saw. Regsrdless of the score I saw what appeared to be a slam. I also did not see remorse afterwards. Again I am glad my observation was inaccurate in this case. I love intense wrestling but never wish injury on anyone. As far as any kind of confrontational pissing match over someone's opinion, as it would appear you are eluding to, that comment tends to hold it's own merit. God bless

I would have to see the tape in slow-mo. What I saw from close range appeared to be a pretty rough slam. I guess that the tape can be posted and let all the slow-mo experts express their opinion. From the live action, I don't see how the ref couldn't have called it. By the way, I know that wrestling is not a nice sport. I just never understood when a wrestler is dominating a match why they wouldn't take another avenue to take the opposing wrestler back down to the mat without leaving it to the official whether or not it was a legal move.

I can tell the events saturday have stirred emotions. As Blakes coach I'd like to just add this to the conversation. Blake is a good kid that loves the sport of wrestling. He approaches the sport with 100 percent commitment. He would not intentionally try to hurt his oppenent. He will however, get after it for 6 minutes which is excatly what I coach my kids to do. The slam was hard but wasnt blatant as some have directed. I teach that same lift and return in practice to all my wrestlers, its the best one you can teach.

"It was a lift/return and unfortunately landed badly."

While this quote pretty much sums it up, the video would be a good way for an informed view.

Remember - "slam" is really a misnomer...there is no "slamming" required. The rule says you have to bring your opponent to the mat without unnecessary force. The case book has an example where you accidentally drop your opponent and that's a "slam" because you have to bring your opponent to the mat under control and protect him. Its just an unnecessary roughness call but because we call it a "slam" it sounds like it is supposed be a big whack or something really out of the ordinary. It probably doesn't get called enough. Unfortunately, when it ends in an injury it costs the offender the match. There's rarely a "bad motive" and usually it is just what happened here...the lift ends badly...for whatever reason. And most of the time the injured wrestler is able to continue so its just a point.

As a coach who was matside and in front row view of the event I would like to add what I saw. I had a wrestler who was on deck so I had a pretty good view of the events as I was standing right next to the mat. In my 20 years of kids, high school, collegiate, and coaching in wrestling I have seen that lift and return hundreds of times. It was a legal attempt to return an opponent without any intent to harm Yetmar. However, I did agree with the refs call on an illegal slam because of the way Yetmar landed. I viewed it as an unfortunate and unintentional accident. Accidents happen in aggressive combat sports - I was never an overly aggressive wrestler (don't tell my kids that ha!) in my career and was called for illegal slams that were accidents.

As a wrestler you practice a move hundreds of times over the year with your teammates. Every coach teaches to be mentally tough and work through an entire match (especially at the end of the season)- to not let up, and to be aggressive on returns just like an other wrestling position. When working technique you develop a certain flow and expectation in which wrestlers will move when in action. However, anything can happen in a match and when wrestling different styles sometimes a wrestler zigs when you thought he was going to zag. It looked like when fighting to compete hard in a match Bailey kept scrambling and turned a way Blake didn't expect on the return.

I do think the ref had to call it illegal because of the way Bailey landed - that was my initial reaction. Hopefully Bailey is ok and healthy as it has been fun to watch him grow as a wrestler over the past three years.

The good news for Blake is that he a talented freshman and that happened at Sunflower League and not state. Also unfortunate for the rest of the Sunflower League is that Olathe North has some extremely talented and tough young wrestlers:(

This is a good topic to talk about. To my understanding, Blake was using a simple lift and return like you see every weekend over 100 times. Bailey was trying to grandby out as he landed, which can be very effective when used correctly. What do you do as a ref? The bottom wrestler put himself in the position to get hurt while the top wrestler was simply trying to take his opponent down with control. Was it the right call on Blake? Just because it looked bad doesn't mean it was blatant or intentional. How can you punish a wrestler who has no control over what his opponent is going to do?

If you can't return your opponent safely, then don't lift him in the first place. There is no wiggle room in the rule. It is NOT the responsibility of the defensive wrestler to return safely to the mat.

Please explain to me how to return a kid safely to the mat when he hits a grandby in mid air.

I respectfully disagree. It states in the rule book that if a wrestler's actions make an otherwise legal move into an illegal move (paraphrasing) then there will not be a penalty. The defensive wrestler has a responsibility as well.

Can somebody please post the video of this so we can all make an informed opinion. Some moves look very dramatic in person and look pretty vanilla on youtube. I've seen slams that don't hurt the wrestler at all and are not called and non-slams where the wrestler on bottom screams bloody murder and a slam is called. I apologize if this has already been posted but I don't see it. Show us the video and we can decide for ourselves. Please don't make this into a needless thread if most of us have not even even what happened.
