Did they change team scoring this year? I thought only placers scored points.

Yes...we had a Kids Executive Board Meeting prior to the tournament and it was sugested that we score advancement points as well...there were no objections from any of the districts reps so that is what we did.

Yes, congrats to the Kansas Young Guns on winning the team championship. At times it seemed as if there was a Young Gun kid wrestling on every mat.

Does anyone know what team scores would have been had they not changed the scoring?

The scoring will correlate to the number of kids your club has wrestling at the state tournament which most likely will correlate directly with the number of kids you have in your club. Team score has always been an informal tradition as there are no rules or bylaws for this. The traveling trophy was created to memorialize Greg Grater's contribution to Kansas wrestling. Thus the the name Grater Cup with the names of the teams winning it added each year sort of like the Stanley Cup in hockey.

It seems now that this trophy has polarized our clubs as most do not have a shot at winning it.

I would like to see some suggestions as to how we could do this differently without disenfranchising any of our kids who are members of their respective clubs.

Should we have a small club cup? How would you define a small club verses a large club?

Should we cap the number of entries you can have on one club at subs meaning that you might have to have a East KS Team 2, for example.

Just looking for some outside of the box ideas to promote Kansas Kids wrestling.

Small 1-15

Medium 15-30

Large 30-50

Giant 50-100

It is crazy coming from a smaller type clube the number that some have.

Track does have a participant count so it wouldn't be that hard.

I would rahter see a couple dual format tournaments thourghout the year in Kansas. We traveled to MO for one earlier and I still enjoy them.

A team is a set amount of weights, not how many clubs get absorbed into one giant one.

I have been to several tournaments outside of Kansas (TX, NM) where you are allowed to list your top 20 wrestlers. Placement point totals were the determining criteria, but I really enjoyed the bonus point system at this years state tournament! I would be for a Top 20 with the point system we had at this years state championship. Coaches pick their Top 20 wrestlers! 20 is a great number in my opinion, but who is to say 15 wrestlers couldn't beat 20?

I come from large clubs and always have, but just because you bring a lot of wrestlers to the state tournament doesn't mean you place in the top 5 at state. Take a look at number of kids each club brought to state and there placement.... I don't have time to crunch the numbers but I am sure someone can.

Just a suggestion but maybe by school attended. So if you wrestle for haysville but go to goddard you would be listed as haysville club/ goddard school and your points would go for goddard. If your a young gun and go to eisehower you would be listed as young gun club/ eisenhower school and points would go to eisenhower. Just a thought would show the winning school instead of club. Sounds pretty cool to me.

The top 3 clubs in participants finished in the top 3. The number one club had the most.

If you have a thousand wrestlers it wouldn't matter if they were not any good. Bottom line is the top three have a lot kids because they have a lot of great coaches.

No one wants to be on a team that is standing still,so in turn they flock to these elite teams. Which each year they have more kids.

These teams aren't in the top three because they have more kids. They are in the top three because have more kids that place high in every tournament, not only State.Look at all of the National Tournament results almost all of the placers from Kansas are from these big schools in the top ten.

All of the top ten teams have kids that become great High School wrestlers and that is all that matters. Kids team titles (although are awesome)dont really matter.

I agree, they still have to qaulify at subs and districts. Even tougher, they have to win matches at state.

Some communities, no matter how great the program and coaching, do not have the numbers to draw from. With Greater Gold being the one exception, nearly all of the clubs that have been champions were from either the KC area or Wichita area.

What about using a percentage of participants to placers? For instance if you take 12 to subs and 6 place at state, you get 50%. Personally I think some of the smaller clubs are greater and do get over looked. How many clubs can qualify 75% of its wrestlers at the state level be under the radar? Just sayin.

so you think 6 out of 12 placers is better than 34 out of 49. im not so sure about that. i talked about this a few years ago when we took 23 kids to state and placed 17. its really not about quanity but quality. lucky for us we have both. we have a very good novice program to build with as well. i would be lying if i said winning the team title wasnt nice because it was. we lost to east kansas last year by around 10 or 12 points and took 10 less wrestlers. so we have been on both sides of it. the boys were excited about having the chance to win it when we qualified the numbers we did. i personally dont go into the season thinking about winning the team title. it was there and our kids worked just like everyone else did to claim it in the end. i knew it would be close with maize and east kansas. something i think would be even better than this is to win a team championship at tulsa nationals.

No actually i think he said 34 out of 49 would be better. 6 out of 12 is 50%, and 34 out of 49 is 69%. So you guys would still win.

Congrats Kansas Young Guns, it took everything you had to knock of Maize this year.
