BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Baker University Director of Athletics Theresa Yetmar has announced the hiring of the second head coach in the history of the Baker wrestling program, as Pete Di Pol will join the athletic department to take over the nationally ranked program for previous head coach Jimmy May.

Di Pol comes to Baker after serving as the head coach at Gloucester County College in Sewell, N.J., since 2011.

While at GCC, Di Pol was named the Region 19 Coach of the Year and the Garden State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year twice.

His squad finished fourth in the nation in 2012 and fifth in 2013 in the NJCAA Non-Scholarship division. In his career at GCC he accumulated a record of 23-6 that featured 19 national qualifiers, two district champions, two All-Americans and one national finalist.

"Throughout the search process we were overwhelmed by the interest in our wrestling program, and had a very impressive candidate pool," said Yetmar. "The passion exhibited for our program is truly a credit to the work ethic of our student-athletes and coaches who have established our program in the last five years.

"In the search for our new head coach, Pete set himself apart with his outstanding credentials and his ability to communicate a vision for Baker wrestling moving forward. He believes in our mission of developing champions for life, which rests on finding success on the mat and in the classroom. We look forward to Pete joining our team and carrying on our winning tradition."

Prior to coming to Gloucester County College, Di Pol was regarded as one of the best high school coaches in the state of New Jersey and won three New Jersey state championships as head coach. Best known for his head coaching stints at Camden Catholic H.S. and Haddonfield H.S., Di Pol also spent time as head coach at Edgewood H.S. and Schalick H.S.

He compiled an impressive 225-67 record and was named coach of the year five times. He coached 36 District Champions, eight Region Champions, 11 State Place Winners, three State Finalists, and one State Champion. He also coached a Beast of the East Champion in 2006 and had a High School All-American in 2007.

Di Pol was a standout wrestler at powerhouse Paulsboro H.S. in the early 1990's. At Paulsboro he was a member of four state championship teams and the No. 1 team in New Jersey in 1991. He was Captain his senior year, two-time District Champion, 1994 Region 8 Champion, and Most Valuable Wrestler of the Region 8 Tournament.

He also finished 7th/8th in the State of New Jersey in 1994. Coach Di Pol was a member of the South Jersey All-Star Team and was also named the Most Valuable Wrestler of the 1994 Paulsboro wrestling team. He was a member of the 1996 NJCAA Division III National Championship team as a wrestler at Gloucester CC and also a graduate of the Gloucester County Police Academy.

"I'm ecstatic," said Di Pol. "It's been a life long dream of mine to coach at the four-year collegiate level. I respect what Coach May has done starting the wrestling program at Baker and I am very impressed in the program he has created. I am excited to come in and help carry on that tradition.

"I can't get over how nice everyone I met was when I visited the Baker campus and I can't wait to be part of the Baker family."

Dipol earned a Bachelor's Degree from Rutgers University, a Master's Degree and Educational Specialist Degree both from Liberty University and is currently pursuing his Doctorate in Education from Northeastern University. He and his wife Tina have three children Alexis, Angelo, and Cecilia.

"Pete brings with him an outstanding resume and was a very successful coach on the East coast," said May. "He turned two high school programs into national powers and I believe the transition between he and I will be excellent. I know he will work well with our wrestlers. He came up in a similar route I did from the high school ranks. He has been in the trenches in the high school level and he will be an outstanding asset to Baker University."
