Maybe this question has come up before and I just missed it. How do four freshmen at the 106# class get ranked over 2 of last years state qualifiers? I have watched 5 of the top 6 wrestle. I know my opinion doesnt matter, but i would have the upper classmen 1 and 2. I watched this class very close last year. No. 5 and 6 are very tough competitors even against some of the ranked 113#ers, as they wrestled at that weight at Kids State last year.
I am not positive, but I dont think there were any head to head matches last year between the freshmen and the upperclassman. Just curious.

Well that must be a rhetorical question, because the answer is a no brainer.
5A is already the toughest class without 6A and will be even more once again if Heights goes down. 6A is probably almost as tough.

Really? Why did he make the move? If you mind explaining .. & hernandez beat rylan in 2012 when rylan was weighing about 90lbs & it was only by 2 points in overtime.

It's a good point Tyson. #5 could definitely be ranked higher. #6 lost to a good 8th grader but also wrestled Mainus very close and had one win over Pemberton. 106 is always the exception with the freshmen. This group is especially deep and talented. I respect your knowledge at this weight and welcome a PM or text from you.

PRE-SEASON RANKINGS!

Wrestlers are ranked by their ANTICIPATED weights. As with any ranking system they are just my opinion, arrived at through MANY hours of research. The classifications are out this Friday and changes will be noted then.

Many factors are considered (Not always in this order):

1. State bracket performance.
2. Performance at national folkstyle tournaments.
3. National FS/GR success.
4. Information from Coaches and Parents.
5. Competition that the wrestler has faced.

IMPORTANT:

The input must include criteria! Asking, "Why is this guy above that guy" or saying, "I can't believe you have that guy ranked" is not criteria. Just state your evidence and if found substantive, I will change it. Also remember that we are still many weeks away from the first whistle so a lot can change and surely will.

I will update these rankings based on new information on weights or past criteria.

Tyson,

Here is probably why Chief would have these underclassman ahead of the upper classman, or at least the criteria that might get them there.

106:
1. Idris Elias - WW - 9 - 5A-2 wins over Treaster
2. Logan Treaster - NEW - 9 - 5A-2 wins over Joint
3. Gary Joint - JC - 9 - 6A-Has wins over Pemberton and Delforge, both HS state placers last year
4. Corbin Nirschl - BL - 9 - 4A-Has win over Verhaeghe, has 2 wins over Paxton Rosen (OK) Trinity and 15U Wrestler of the year through Roller Series
5. Logan McDowell - AB - 11 - 4A-Lost to Verhaeghe at kids state, Lost to Mainus at HS State
6. Emmanuel Browne - 10 - SUM - 4A-Beat Mainus at HS State, lost to Pemberton
7. Tanner Hitchcock - PT - 9 - 5A
8. Tyler Flood - PAO - 9 - 4A
9. Collin Wallar - BS - 10 - 4A
10. Lane Glover - GD - 9 - 5A

Many of these freshmen have beaten HS state placers.

Specifically, Nirschl beat Verhaeghe who beat Wallar. Glover has beaten Wallar. Browne lost to Pemberton, who lost to Gary Joint. Every single year there are exceptions to the freshman rule at 106. What is your definition of "proven themselves"? There are no returning high school state placers at 106.

We will figure it out on the mat.
But in the mean time, let's have some rankings to look at and start thinking about possible future match ups. Rankings are awesome. They interest fans and recognize, excite and inspire athletes. Why would we not have rankings? We have rankings in every sport on the planet including wrestling. Why would we not do it for Kansas high school wrestling? That does not make sense. Without being disrespectful, that seems illogical. I don't get the disgruntlement over the rankings.
Great job as always Chief! Thanks for the effort. Keep up the great work!

Hope that wasn't directed at me. Rankings are fine but you can be ranked #1 but it doesn't mean squat untill you actually get to the mat. I do respect what chief dose. Its just funny how every bodys got it figured out before the first match. Good luck to every body!

Any rumors on the locations for the 4A DI and 4A DII State Wrestling Tournaments. Same question for other 4A DI and DII sports.

Guess I should include the 1A DI and DII splits in my questions/comments.

I love the rankings as they are a conversation piece! If you look back at the results from last year, Chief wasn't that far off on most weight classes! As for this year's rankings, there is one name missing and I'm sure he will be in the mix at whatever weight he is at! Christian Bowen should be and will be there at the end of the year!! Lastly, thank you Chief for getting the conversation started!!

I thought that when the 4A split was discussed/cussed on this forum in the Spring of 2013, that the main drivers/supporters for the split was the 4A wrestling community!!!!!! The 4A wrestling folks had been bitching forever about the unfairness of the 6A and 5A versus the 4A classes. Had never read any other Kansas HS sports forums--if they exist--that bitched about the 6A/5A/4A ""unfairness".

For all Kansas HS sports need to push for a 40/40/40 or 40/40/44 or 48 classes organization. Don't go to a 48/48/48 (as has been recommended)---would rob/role the top/biggest 3A schools into the 48 school 4A class.
