BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The No. 14 ranked Baker University wrestling team opened up the 2013-14 season on Sunday afternoon at the Dan Harris Open inside the Collins Center.
The Open featured schools from all over the Midwest and defending 174-pound All-American Parker Owen moved up a weight class on Sunday for Baker and won the 184-pound bracket with a win over Austin Warren of Neosho County CC in the final.
Bryce Shoemaker had a solid tournament for the Wildcats in his collegiate debut, as he took third-place in the 133-pound bracket and senior 125-pound wrestler Alan Calahan also took third in his bracket.
Bryce Hood also took third place for the Wildcats in the 149-pound class and Connor Middleton advanced all the way to the final of the 157-pound class but fell to Sam Son who wrestled unattached. Nick Haugen took third in the 157-pound bracket.
Jakob Price had a solid match advancing to the final match of the 165-pound class, but the senior fell to Oshea Smith-Traylor an unattached wrestler in the final.
Bryant Guillen performed well in the 174-pound class, as he advanced to the final match of his weight class and fell to Bryce Carr of Northwest Tech.
Baker's Beau Bennett competed in the final bout of the entire tournament, as he faced Nate Jackson in the 285 pound final. Both battled hard in front of a spirited crowd, but Jackson took home the 5-4 victory over Bennett.
Baker will next compete on Wednesday, Nov. 6 in Muskogee, Okla., as they take on Bacone College in a dual.
