Leaving 5A like volleyball would have made more sense. The distribution of wrestlers participating based on last year's regionals is now 86,103,96,106 as it was with the volleyball 95,94,99,103.

Pittsburg hosting back to back regionals is interesting as well.

Seven teams traveling to Pittsburg with hotel rooms is an interesting plan for "regionals".

Could not be more excited to host regionals at Washburn Rural. Been hoping for this one for a while!

The fact that girls are forced to wrestle at state in the middle of the week is laughably sexist.

Another great decision by KSHAA. It must have taken a very long meeting to come up with such a STUPID idea.

7 teams all withn 20 min of each other and you hold the tournament at the one place that is 2 hours away from those 7 teams. Ding Ding Ding...we have a winner.

Let's all hope the weather is not an issue.

On the positive side......I love me some Chicken Annies.

Not all schools are interested in hosting a regional. Could conflict with basketball or other school activities. It's not just putting the regional in a place and calling it good. Schools have to show interest and are not forced to host. Maybe people should speak with their administration if they are not happy and have them put in for Regionals in the future.

"It's not just putting the regional in a place and calling it good."

Because that would make to much sense?

Packing up 10 - 14 vans full of kids, hotel costs for 40-50 rooms and very real possibilty that weather could impact getting to the location (HHMMM remember State 2013)seems to me that KSHAA might step in and make a few phone calls and do whats best.

But then agian, that makes to much sense.

B O O H O O Just go and wrestle. Are you preparing the path for the kid or the kid for the path? Looks like your parents did the first. Be a good example and just go wrestle.

Nice assumption Beeson. No crying here. just pointing out the stupid decision made by KSHAA.

Relax

I'm old school.... I come from a home of a High School FB Coach in the 70's and 80's. Back when you could grab a face mask, use a few choice words on the sidelines and not worry about getting called the the principles office the next day when 20 parents complained.

When it make sense I completely agree with you. In a time when I see nearly EVRY school complain about travel budget it is ridiculous to spend $7000 when you only need to spend $1000 (these are conservative numbers based on estimated travel and lodging costs). Heck, every metro school could pitch in $150 to PHS and call it good. I know for a fact that the PHS AD whined so loudly to KSHSAA because he refused to travel a PHS team to Liberal KS that they moved the game to a neutral site! That seems ironic now that coupled with the fact that they just hosted last year... The process for regional assigning and selection is not understood and doesn't appear to be documented. Many AD's have no idea what the process is and whether or not they should/could apply as they thought they would be contacted by KSHSAA. At the end of the day, why would we expect any decision from Topeka to make sense?? After all it is the same city that Kathy S. (queen of Obamacare) lived in and promoted spending over $100 million to save a town of less than 1,000 people. At this point all we can do is sit back at let KSHSAA reinforce the fact that common sense isn't very common.

We are lucky enough to host this year, but most years, we would be excited to only have to travel 2 hours for regionals. I don't know if it "makes sense" for us to host or not, but I'm sure glad we are!!!

I have been lucky this year as we also hosted the girls' golf regional (the fall sport I coach). Usually I travel 3 hours for Regional golf and then 3+ hours for regional wrestling!

By the way, you wanna talk about a LONG drive to Pittsburg, that is where we went for state golf this last fall. Made state golf a 4-day adventure!

My senior year Liberal played Ft. Scott at Ft. Scott in the 5A state football finals, one of Mark Lentz's most memorable days. That was a road trip as well.

Another issue pointed out is that you increase the opportunity for an auto accident seven times in this scenario. There are at least three schools in this regional that could have hosted. Someone dropped the ball and since it is a KSHSAA event it is a no brainer to point your finger in that direction.

What seem frustrating no matter the travel it appears, that many schools get repeat Regionals when I know for a fact there have been several trying for years that keep getting passed by.

Is it totaly making me piss fire madd, no but it is frustrating. Having a Regional does several thing for the community and surrounding areas along with a chance for the kids club to throw in some support and maybe earn some extra money.

Like Will said having a cycle or a comittee that picks the Regional makes way to much sense for KSHAA.

Ricky your missing the point. In most cases a team or Teams might have to travel. That is not the issue. Traveling in sports has to happen. This wasn't any issue of 4 or 5 teams having to travel or even 2 out of the 8. 7 of the 8 teams are within 15-20 min of each other. Pittsburg is the only team that would have to travel over 20 min.

This is a no brainer...

As I recall after regional were assigned last year, they made a change to a different venue.

What are the chances we get it moved back to a more central location this year?

Pittsburg had to travel North for Volleyball. I am sure they will have to go North for Golf (Boys and Girls), Basketball (Boys and Girls), Baseball, Softball, Track, Soccer, and some sports I am leaving out. Do you think it is right that the Northern schools come to them at least once?? It isn't like a 5a regional is 2days or anything. 14 weight classes with 5 to 8 kids in each wrestling only out to top 4 places......can be done in 5 hours or so. Start at 9:00 and done at 3:00.
