Just curious why the 6u state kids don't get to participate in the elementary qualification tournament? Especially the 1st grade kids that win 6U state.

Not saying they cant hold their own, but you do realize they will have to wrestle kids in their weight class all the way up to 6th grade. Which is usaually the bottom or top side of 12 and under.

Also need to open up the wrestler list to avoid getting 2 or 3 state champs at the same weight.

1st - 6th grade PERIOD!! It's not up to opinions. Let them wrestle or take it off the flyer. (my opinion)

1st graders can participate in the Elementary Duals. The 8U State Champion will get the nod over the 6U State Champion. If the 6U State Champion wants to wrestle in 8U and see how he does, that is fine also.

Opening up the weights will not benefit much at the elementary level. 8U State Champions at 88 will not get the nod over the 12U 88 State Champion. There will be alot of State Champions at several of the weights. The older kids will get the nod 99% of the time. Just the way it is.

Thanks for clearing that up. I was under the impression that they couldn't do both tournaments (6U state/duals). 12U champs at 75, 80, 85 all going at 80 is what I was getting at.

I am assuming because the two tournaments are being ran at the same time. Kinda like not being allowed to double dip at a split format tournament in the same session. They don't want to wait for a kid wrestling in tow divisions if they come up at the same time.

I'm assuming they don't want all the vacant spots filled by 1st graders. Last time I looked there were only 14 kids signed up.

Wow not many. Do they have a matrix up or wrestler list.

I just looked at it. Obviously our club hasn't entered our kids yet. I am sure that list will go up fast once the registration deadline nears.

I was wrong! According to the matrix, 18 kids have signed up. 85 lbs has a full team already.......

Next year we need to have the qualification tournament on a day when the 1st graders can participate. Even though making the team is a long shot, the elementary school tournament is for 1st-6th.

I disagree. I think they chose one day for both tournaments because they can use the facility at Salina after the 4A State tourney. Plus, it is a centralized location for all in the state to reach.

But I think the main reason is the chances of a first grader making the Elem Dual team are so remote it is not worth picking an entire new date. It may sound harsh, but a 6 year old kid has only the slightest chance to beat a 4th, 5th, or 6th grader to make the team. Rare (if ever) is the 6U kid that has consistently placed in 10U and 12U Open tournaments.

If such a 6 year old exists that he could make the team, he or she should be willing to forego the 6U State tourney. After all, he probably won it the year or two before and a State win against other 6U kids would not mean much.

It is for 1st-6th. He can still wrestle Elem Duals, he just can't also wrestle 6U State.

Few things in life are perfect, but I think this is a neat set up that is reasonable for the vast, vast majority. It's just not practical to have it on separate weekends.

Question.....What does 'getting the nod' mean?

Getting the Nod means the wrestler will be chosen over another wrestler. If two State Champions are at the same weight one at 8U and one at 12U, the 12U State champion will get the nod, or be chosen over the 8U State Champion.
