Seeking ninth straight, Grand View gets nine semifinalists for big lead at NAIA Nationals in Kansas

PARK CITY, Kansas - By punching nine athletes into the semifinals round, Grand View (Iowa) took a commanding lead after the first day of the NAIA National Championships.

Nick Mitchell’s Vikings, seeking a ninth straight NAIA national title, have almost double the points of the next team in the standings. Grand View has 113 points, which second place Reinhardt at 57.5 points. The battle appears to be for second place, as Cumberlands (Ky.) is in third with 52 points, Menlo (Calif.) is in fourth with 47 points and Baker (Kan.) is in fifth with 45 points.

Of those nine semifinalists, Grand View has two weight classes where they put two athletes in the semifinals. At 157 pounds, No. 1 seed Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer will battle teammate and No. 4 seed Dalton Jensen in a semifinal match. At 165 pounds, No. 3 Giovanni Bonilla is in a different semifinal than Grand View teammate No. 4 Kyle Caldwell.

Top seed Evan Hansen, who seeks his fourth NAIA National title, powered his way into the semifinals, where he will face No. 5 Ramsey Bloy of the Cumberlands (Ky.). There have been seven four-time NAIA champions, but Hansen aims to be the first four-timer for Grand View.

Should Hansen win his semifinal, he could have a championship rematch against No. 2 seed Isaac Bartel of MSU-Northern, who is in the other semifinal. Hansen beat Bartel 6-4 in last year’s finals.

Other Viking wrestlers who have moved on to the semifinals are No. 1 seed Justin Portillo (125) , No. 1 seed Kendon Lee (141), No. 3 seed Tanner Abbas (149) and No. 5 seed Kendrick Jones (184).

Not everything went perfect for Grand View. At 133 pounds. No. 8 seed Sean Deshazer of Life (Ga.) beat No. 1 seed Shea Ruffidge of Grand View, 7-1 in sudden victory 1. Ruffidge was the only No. 1 seed beaten on Friday.

Besides Hansen, three other returning champions have advanced to Saturday’s semifinals, Lucas Lovvorn of Baker (174), Anthony Orozco of Menlo (184) and Brandon Reed (285) of Lindsey Wilson (285). All four of the returning champions in the semifinals were seeded No. 1.

Two teams have placed four athletes in the semifinals, Reinhardt (Ga.) and Menlo (Calif.). There are 18 different teams which have advanced an athlete into the semifinals.
