I was just wondering if anyone had an opinion and/or reasoning why there has been very few 4 time state champions in the heavier weights. I was going through the list of 4 time champions and only found 1 in the heavier weights, Oeser KMC, 74-77, 155x2 and 167x2.He was also a Grand State champion. I'm sorry if I missed anyone in my search.
I did see that most of them were in the lower and middle weights.
However, in any weight, being a 4 time state champion at any classification level is an awesome achievement. All of you should be proud.

Generally, in the heavier weight classes the freshman will be much more likely to be competing against seniors who have developed and matured into young men, with greater strength as well as athletic agility.

In the lighter weights, the freshman are much more likely to compete with other freshman and underclassmen.

I agree with what Richard said. I think after a certain weight (152-160) it would be extremely difficult for a freshman to win State. The best chance might actually be in the heaviest 275 in which there might be fewer competitors. I think a 3 time heavier State champ would be a comparable feat to a 4 time lighter State champ. In our Johnson County area Justin Dyer's 3 time State title record compares well to Zach Roberson's 4 time accomplishment. In my opinion they are both pretty incredible accomplishments.

Takes a pretty special freshman to compete with the state's elite in the upper weights.

And if you listen to the lore "spread" by many of Kansas' elder wrestling ambassadors, it took a pretty special freshman to even make the team back in the day - back before the emergence of participation in kid wrestling programs had prepared a kid to compete as a freshman and when the powerhouse teams were deep with talent at every weight.

It seemed like there was a more natural progression 20 yrs ago. i got my face stomped in as a younger bigger kid for two years by the varsity guys above me. I had 2 years on the varsity level exclusively but i can only remember mostly the lightweight guys being the only ones that had a shot to wrestle as freshmen.

I agree. Three timers in the heavier weights are just as impressive. Guys like Dyer, Boyle and Bedore deserve the props for thier feats also. Sorry if I left anyone out but that was the three that came to mind.
