Detmer beat Spangler for 3rd at 174!!! I am 100% happy for Kyle... However, I saw on a tweet that the win was by Inj Default.... Could be wrong... either way... Kyle is going to have a shot at the NCAA's!!! Good for Kyle for sure!

What happens next for Big 12 wrestling and Missouri wrestling? I assumed there will still be four Big 12 active wrestling teams with Missouri leaving and West Virginia joining the Big 12.
I am not sure if this is true but it appears that this tournament was a four wrestler bracket tournament with the winner of the first match going to the final and the loser of the first match going to the third place match.
I wonder if the Big 12 considered making this end of the year conference wrestling championship tournament a dual meet where each team would wrestle the other three teams?
Are there other SEC teams with wrestling teams for Missouri to compete with in conference?

I Id' only 4 Kansas wrestlers: Detmer, McCormick, Maple, Beard. Who was the other 1?
Also Id 2 ex-KC Mo high school wrestlers had seen in local big tournaments--the Bobcat and BIT?: Waters and Haynes from Oak Park HS.

Wrestling is such a popular youth and high school sport in Missouri. That would truly be a shame and we do not need to lose another D-I college wrestling program especially at a BCS university.

Has nothing to do with popularity. It's all about the dollars and regardless of what you might have heard, Missouri is going to take a hit financially by going to the SEC. Not to mention, does any other SEC school have a program?

I think this statement is way off. Haven't they remodeled their wrestling facility twice in the last 10 years? Wrestling is one of their better sport teams at Missouri. Don't look at the move to SEC as negative. I think Brian Smith does a great job of promoting wrestling and can turn the move into a positive for the sport. Maybe some of those other SEC schools can pull their heads out and add wrestling once again.

Not to mention, does any other SEC school have a program? I think you are correct that no other SEC school has a program. But Missouri will probably still wrestle most of their wrestling schedule here in the Midwest area as they do now. However, I do agree that the financial aspect is the overriding decision maker with college athletic departments. That is why the salaries for football and basketball coaches are so high especially compared to a college wrestling coach. It is also why college scholarships for the average football and basketball players are full rides in comparison to partial wrestling scholarships. It is also why I so firmly believe that the wrestling community needs to step up more and financially support our college wrestling programs across the board or we will continue to lose programs and college wrestling and academic programs for our youth. This is also why I have been so actively trying to promote the new Kansas College Wrestling Fund on this forum. Unfortunately it does not seem to be generating the same amount of interest as the drive to sign the Division I petition did a few years ago. I am not sure if that is because the KCWF is not for a potential Division I university or if it is just more difficult for people to make a financial donation vs. just signing a petition. If everyone would be willing to make small donations it could make a huge difference. We have about 15,000 USAW-KS members and high school wrestlers. If we averaged donations of $10 per wrestler that is $150,000 a year right there. Then if we could develop an alumni base of at least 1,000 additional donors like myself who would committ to $100 to $120 a year, we would be up to $250,000 a year. I know people probably think I am very unrealistic about this but I think that is really what is ultimately needed to make a difference and I do not think it is unreasonable amounts from either group. I just believe if the Kansas wrestling community wants Kansas college wrestling to prosper and grow that we need to be willing to pay for it and make that committment. I know I am impatient to see this type of committment.

Possibly Mizzou could stay in the Big 12 for wrestling, kind of like Boise State is in the Pac 12. But probably too much bad blood on seperation for this to happen. This would be best for both parties. Missouri will have to go the Southern conference or EICWA for there National qualification. Maybe ACC or MAC would let them in.
What scares me about the SEC, is they are strong in the sunny sports like baseball, tennis, golf. Mizzou doesn't have a tennis team, so they could see pressure to switch to align with the conference. I think as long as Brian Smith is at Mizzou, wrestling is safe. He won't be there forever.

Below is a statement from B. Smith given after the decision was announced MIZZOU would be moving to the SEC: http://missouriwrestling.com/news.php?recordID=296After reading his statement, Smith doesn't seem concerned about the wrestling program surviving the move. The talk in the MO papers WRT MU Wrestling is the move will force an overhaul on the regional/conference qualifying process. It is still unclear where MU will land but there have been rumors they could end up in the places named above and I've also heard they could land in the Eastern Wrestling League. Seems unlikely but you never know. Once Nationals are finished, there will be announcements as to what we can expect. One other interesting fact... B. Smith's contract ends this year.
