Last year we had the clubs and host tournaments (listed below) who helped the Kansas College Wrestling Fund. Each year, The KCWF Committee would like to add a few more clubs that are hosting tournaments in the state of Kansas to get involved with our mission of supporting the Kansas Colleges.

If I missed any clubs or tournaments let me know. Thank you for helping our Kansas College Wrestling Programs.

Sincerely,

Sean McCarthy

Good morning Sean,

The Chanute Wrestling Club agreed to collect and donate to the KCWF, $1 from each entry from our annual tournament the Woods Classic. We had 362 paid entries and decided as we did last year to round up. So, I am wanting to get a check to you for $400. Would you like me to drop it in the mail, or hand deliver it at the next tourney we are at that you guys have a booth set up?

Thank You,

Matt McDonald

Joe Renfro – College Coach – (620) 717-3196, e-mail joer@labette.edu - Thank you for your service to Kansas Wrestling, the KCWF, and bringing another National Championship to Labette. Good luck in your new job in Oklahoma. You will be missed in Kansas.

STOP BY THE KCWF BOOTH in Exhibition Hall at the Kansas USA Wrestling Kids State Tournament in Topeka and check out the new camo hats and other promotional materials.

We have about the same clubs/tournaments committed to helping with Kansas College Wrestling Fund again this year. I do believe we have added a few other tournaments.

Last year we had these clubs and host tournaments who helped the Kansas College Wrestling Fund by adding a dollar to admission charge for fans or adding $1 per entry.

If I missed any clubs or tournaments let me know. Thank you for helping our Kansas College Wrestling Programs.

Sincerely,

Sean McCarthy

The KCWF had a good weekend at the Kids State Tournament many individuals, clubs and businesses stopped by the KCWF booth - an updated list of contributors will be posted soon.

USA Wrestling Kansas Inc., and the KCWF Committee also recognized Vince and Linda Nowak for their contributions to the KCWF. A very deserving standing ovation by the crowd.

Vince and Linda Nowak were introduced to wrestling in 1997 when their son Jacob was in the first grade. Jacob went on to wrestle for 15 years thru his junior year in college. Jacob had a successful youth, high school and college wrestling career. Their son was on the first Baker University wrestling team in 2009-2010. He was a two time NAIA national qualifier as well as a NAIA Academic All American. Jacob is graduating in May 2013 with a Business/Accounting degree. Jacob begins law school this summer on scholarship at the University of Kansas Law School.

The Nowak’s became very interested in trying to help combat the dropping of college wrestling programs early in their son’s youth wrestling career. Vince wanted to see increased college wrestling and academic opportunities for our young Kansas wrestlers.

The Nowak’s believed that the best way to achieve more college wrestling and academic opportunities was thru increased financial support from the wrestling community. Two years ago it was announced that UNO in Omaha, Nebraska had decided to drop its wrestling program. The UNO wrestling coach was informed of this decision immediately after his team had just won its third straight and overall seventh NCAA Division II national title. This news shocked the national wrestling community that even this successful of a program could be dropped. This news spurred the Kansas wrestling community into action.

Immediately after UNO’s announcement Vince got involved with a small group including Sean McCarthy, Ned Price and Randy Hinderliter to form the Kansas College Wrestling Fund. The group contacted USAW-KS Board of Directors Chairman Mike Juby about forming Kansas College Wrestling Fund to be administered by the USAW-KS organization. Mr. Juby asked the group to draft a mission statement and operating guidelines for the Fund. Vince and the other group members worked many hours over the next two months to prepare the guidelines of the new Fund. The Fund was tentatively approved in May 2011 by the USAW-KS Board of Directors. Vince was an original Kansas College Wrestling Fund foundation committee board member which met for the first time on June 12, 2011 in Salina, Kansas. The Fund’s guidelines were finalized and approved that fall by the USAW-KS Board of DIrectors.

In the first two operating years of the Kansas College Wrestling Fund, Vince and Linda Nowak became Gold Level Donors. It is their hope that everyone in the Kansas wrestling community will work to develop and maintain college wrestling in Kansas for our future generations of youth wrestlers by becoming donors and by actively promoting the Kansas College Wrestling Fund in their local wrestling communities.

Funds like this one should have been established in the 70’s and 80’s in every state. Today's athletes will also be our future generations of teachers and coaches.

Sean,

Linda and I want to thank you, Mike Juby, Bill Peterman, other Kansas College Wrestling Fund commitee members and the other members of the USAW-KS Kids Board for the recognition of our contributions to the Kansas College Wrestling Fund. We also want to thank the Kansas Kids State tournament committee who allowed the recognition to be done at the State tournament.

I think it was a very appropriate place and time for such a recognition since it was before a large group of young Kansas wrestlers and their families who will hopefully someday directly benefit from the Kansas College Wrestling Fund. I told Sean McCarthy on Saturday before the award recognition as we looked over all the young wrestlers sitting on the mats in front of us that we did all this work for this Fund for the future benefit of these young wrestlers. Sean said that was absolutely correct.

I was very glad that my son Jacob was there too because the young wrestlers and their parents got to see him and hear about his success as a college student athlete both as a wrestler and most important as a student. This is what the fund is all about which is helping to provide better college wrestling and academic opportunities in Kansas colleges and universities for our young Kansas wrestlers.

It would have been wonderful if this fund had been started 35 to 40 years ago. We may have developed a base of over several thousand people and businesses as regular annual donors by now and a very large endowment fund. But this is what we can and need to accomplish going forward. Linda and I no longer have a son or daughter actively involved in wrestling now that Jacob's college career is over. But we have made the decision to continue to donate on an annual basis to the Kansas College Wrestling Fund. We need Kansas wrestling alumni members parents, fans and former wrestlers to continue to support the sport that gave so much to them and their children by contributing to this fund.

I know it is difficult for many to give a financial contribution at this time. I am asking all of you with young wrestlers and all others in our Kansas wrestling community to consider starting now to become regular donors to the Kansas College Wrestling Fund. I would ask you to consider donating at least $120 a year or $10 a month. I believe the Fund now has a method for you to automatically be able to do that thru your bank account or credit card. Just think how much money we could raise to further college wrestling opportunities in Kansas if all members including former wrestlers were averaging contributions of at least $100 annually.

Please consider becoming a donor to the Kansas College Wrestling Fund this week. I hope you will consider doing this on an annual basis and work to promote it in your communities. There is a College Fund link to the left on this website to get more information. Give what you can both in time and money to helping this Fund be a success for the future of college wrestling in Kansas.

Thank you for the recognition you gave to my family on Saturday.

Dear USAW-KS Kids Club Coach, Club President or Club Administrator:

Hello, my name is Sean McCarthy, Head Coach of the STA Kids Wrestling Club in Kansas and Chairperson of the Kansas College Wrestling Fund. It is in my role with the Kansas College Wrestling Fund that I am sending you this letter. I am appealing to each of you, the leaders of Kansas Kids clubs, to help the Kansas College wrestling fund meet its goals and objectives. The Fund needs your help every year!

About two and one half years ago, the United States wrestling community was shocked to learn that the University of Nebraska-Omaha announced it was dropping its legendary NCAA D-II wrestling program. Unfortunately over the last few decades this has become an all too common occurrence for college wrestling programs. Incredibly, the UNO coach was informed of this decision on the very night their program had just won and was celebrating another National D-II team wrestling championship! It was their third consecutive national team title and the eighth national team title overall. For many of us this was a call to action!

In the spring of 2011 a small group decided that the wrestling community needed to become proactive to combat this continual erosion of college wrestling opportunities for our current and future wrestlers. This group worked with the USAW-KS in establishing the Kansas College Wrestling Fund. The fund has now been in existence for a little over two years. The Fund has collected about $43,000 in donations, plus approximately $4,000 in support for promotion materials and operating expenses by the USAWKS Corporate Board. We have also donated $11,000 to the 10 colleges in the first year and plan to give $10,000 this year to the 10 colleges with wrestling programs – as established by our parameters. After all contributions we will start year three with approximately $22,000. This is a very good beginning for the Fund but we know that a lot more is required to help the Kansas collegiate wrestling programs thrive and grow.

It is vitally important that everyone in the Kansas wrestling community become part of this effort. It is the Fund’s goal for it to be a Forever Fund that will be annually supported by all members of the Kansas wrestling community. Ultimately this Fund will benefit the entire Kansas wrestling community but especially our future young Kansas college wrestlers many of whom are now wrestling in our USAW Kansas Kids Clubs. A strong and thriving state collegiate wrestling presence in Kansas offers more opportunities for current and future college wrestlers. More young families will become involved and stay involved at the Kids wrestling club level if they can see both good collegiate academic and wrestling programs in Kansas.

Many of the USAW-KS clubs have already contributed in the first two years of the Kansas College Wrestling Fund’s existence. The Kansas College Wrestling Fund committee greatly appreciates all of these previous contributions. These clubs have done so by charging and contributing an extra $1 from their tournament entry fees and/or ticket sales. We hope these clubs will continue to do so and we are hoping that more clubs running tournaments will join them this year and in future years. We urge you to consider doing so this year. If your club does not run a tournament, perhaps instead you could run a fundraising campaign within your local wrestling community to benefit the Kansas College Wrestling Fund this year.

Educate your local wrestling community including the parents of your kids club wrestlers about the Fund and the need to support it. We urge all kids club leaders to learn more about the Kansas College Wrestling Fund and how you can help it reach its goals and objectives. Go to following link for information on the Fund’s website: http://kcwf.usawks.com/

Sincerely,

Sean McCarthy
Chairperson of Kansas College Wrestling Fund
