Following what Preston Weigel has done this year at Hays High (pinning or tech falling everyone...or darn near) has me thinking of the most dominant wrestlers we've seen in Kansas.

Jeff Boyle from Norton comes to mind, pinning every opponent and nearly all (all but 1??) in the first period in 1997. I'm not merely thinking unbeaten wrestlers...but those who weren't even challenged.

Weigel is on one of history's most impressive tears. Who else comes to mind as this dominant?

Reece Wright-Conklin was as dominant a wrestler as I was fortunate enough to watch during the last two years of his high school career.

Matt Treaster, Roy Oeser, Justin Ware, Bo Maynes, and many others. Recently, both Bean brothers from Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School. Make no mistake Preston Weigel's accomplishments are indeed outstanding however there are many wrestlers with similar outstanding accomplishments (take away the unfortunate slam by a young Dulgarian and the youngster would be attempting to become a 4 time state champion.

Zach Roberson has my vote!

I am going to plug for my brother Lyle Geyer. One of few senior national champions from Kansas, and as far as I know one of the two OW wrestlers from kansas at senior nationals. He won these 1992.

Tyson Toelkes is currently 26-0 with 24 pins!

Have seen a lot of good ones and I know I am biased. . . but I have not seen as dominating wrestler/athlete as Jeff Boyle was his senior year. His 1997 state HWT championship match summed up his entire 1996-97 season. At the whistle, double leg to half to mat to fall. . . 27 seconds. The opponent was NOT a small HWT and was a good wrestler; went on to be an AA at FHSU.

Coach Samson and i were just talking about this yesterday. I have to agree with Holliday. Preston weigel from hays is a machine. I haven't seen many wrestlers aside from Boyle be this dominant. A couple others i've seen were Colt Rogers, Dulgarian, and Lance Roe his sr year was pretty dang tough. Good topic

If you are talking single season dominance, its hard to beat two undeafeted state champs from Louisburg. Doug Eaton HWT. 1971 class 2A, surrendered only 1 point all seaon long. Tim Dozier 167lbs. 1987 class 4A, surrendered 2 points all season long, only matches to go the distance were semi final and finals matches.

Taylor Moeder went through a brutal schedule his senior year completely unscathed. If he wouldn't have made that one bone headed mistake his junior year he would have went undefeated then as well.

Ryan...I take it you don't let Taylor live that Jr. Year match down? You're right...his Sr. season was incredible!

E.K Franks of Wellington in '88-'89 was incredibly dominant, too. He made really good wrestlers look silly.

Jeremy Long pinned all opponents I believe his Fresh, Soph and Junior Years at state, and had wins over 4X champs Spaulding and May and 3X champ Tillman and 2X champ Saferite.

We can laugh about it now at least .

Headlined by Maple, Caldwell, and Beard I'd say the class of '09 was one of the deepest senior classes ever!

Jason Pyle from Sabetha was pretty dominate his Sr. year in 321-A not giving up a single take down all year and going undefeated. I believe that his last 2 state titles were won without giving up a point in the finals.
His older brother Matt was very dominant as well.

I was wrong, he gave up two take downs his sr. yr, just checked my records...I was correct on the finals though.

All of these guys are definitely in the conversation, but I have to agree with Greg. I don't think we'll ever see another wrestler that was on such a different level than the competition as Jeff Boyle was. He was truly a man among boys.

Agreed Malay. Weigel's sophomore year, he won the State Championship match with a first period tech. That's almost impossible to do.

Danny Grater - Three years undefeated state champion
Ross Taplin - 3x state champion
Jake Kriegbaum 4x state champion
Colt Rogers 4x state champion

All four of them have Team state titles as well.

Can't forget about Cody Garcia of Hutch. 3x state champion. 2x DII Champion. High school team title

Tanner Kriss had a very dominant senior season. I think he scored bonus points in every match all year except his State finals match, which he won by 7 points. That included a major over Caylor in the Finals of the Newton TOC. He wrapped up his senior season with a fall over Boaz Beard in the Senior Classic.

Colby had another undefeated state champ on that team in Breck Arnberger. Arnberger had a few closer matches that year than Kriss, but did have a convincing win over Chase Nelson in the finals of the Newton TOC.

Romero Cotton was pretty dominant.

I always thought this was pretty impressive as well as the young mans last 2 seasons.

Wrestler's junior year he wrestled a total 4 minutes 59 seconds in 4 state tournament matches.

Looking back at this thread...we have really watered it down. Someone pick the top 5 or 10. Also, lets get rid of those with easy schedules, and there are plenty on this list that had easy schedules. Let's name the top ten.

Hands down, the #1 Kansas wrestler of all-time is Melvin Douglas.

Domestically, he won eight U.S. National titles and was a member of 11 USA National teams. Internationally, he made six World teams and two Olympic teams.

In 1989, after becoming one of a handful of Americans ever to win the Tbilisi tournament, Douglas placed second at the World Championships at 180.5 pounds. Four years later he reached the pinnacle of the sport at the World Championships in Toronto, Canada, winning the gold. He followed up that success with bronze medals in 1994 and 1995.

How tough was Ark City's schedule back then? Give me some quality wins. I take Moeder's accomplishments over most, double AA at Fargo (including a National Championship), runner up at Senior Nationals, lost to no one his Jr and Sr (except for a bad FM call) and SJA wrestled the toughest schedule of any KS school including his bump up win over 3xer Chase Nitcher. Heck, speaking of schedule toughness, Ryne had wins over three OK 4xers (Ian Fisher, Zach Beard, Jeremy Davenport)most guys don't see three four timers in their whole career.

He beat Temore Terry a handful of time including the State Finals. He lost one match his Sophomore year in the Perry finals, and this is back when Perry was the toughest tournament in OK. Undefeated his Jr. Year beating a Freestyle National Champ in the finals at Perry. Pinned or Techfalled everyone at State that year. His Sr. Year he had one loss in the Perry finals to a Freestyle AA. This was back when Midwest City was the recruiting hot spot for Oklahoma and they would beat Ark City by 100 points. Ark City would win any KS Tournament with the 6A, 4A, 321A State Champions there by 100 points. At the time I can say Ark City arguably had the toughest schedule in the state. Ware also won High School Nationals his Sr. Year.

And a Loss is a Loss bad call or not.

He was winning handily and was called for FM on a hard collar tie. It was a misapplication of the rule and totally ridiculous.

Senior nationals impressive. Beating Temoer his FR year not so much. State is not a good measuring stick. When you are really good the competition runs many times fleecing your bracket of quality competition. Perry was tough back in that day. Why no GR/FS accomplishments?

I don't think Ware lost to a Kansas opponent from the 5th grade on.

No GR/FS accomplishments because he liked baseball too much. He was a 3 sport standout for Ark City. It's hard to get kids to go out for GR/FS current day, it was even more difficult 30 years ago.

Yes his Sr. year the bracket was pretty empty. Pinned everyone in the first period I believe.

Growing up in El Dorado I can tell you Ware was a very good baseball player. Great competitor.

"Take me out to the ballgame" that is my biggest issue with FS/GR. I love baseball but you have to forgo it to be successful in FS/GR. It is hard and I don't understand why anyone would rather stay home and play video games instead of hitting the road and seeing the best in the country all summer, unless they love baseball, then I understand. What I hate is the Football coaches holding playing time over wrestler's heads to they can't wrestle in the summer. Really ticks me off!

I thought about mentioning Scott before but I didn't know his HS credentials. Good addition to the list. Kenny Fischer should be mentioned too. 3xer with a D1 AA at OU to go along with those titles.

I agree Parker, Coleman was a beast. You can't forget about Boaz Beard either. Unless I'm mistaken, he never lost a high school match.

I agree Ware was a stud, but I once again I think you need to include Lyle Geyer into this conversation then, as he won OW at that same senior Nationals, and if I remember correct he didnt give a take down in that tournament, he pinned eveyone until the finals, and he majored his guy there. Just my opinion.

Beard had 2 losses his Sophomore year. Plus the one loss to Kriss at the senior classic when Beard bumped up a weight.

Still, that is very dominant.

But by his age he would have been a JR. That is something else to look at, Beard and Caldwell both red-shirted their 8th grade year in New Mexico if I remember correctly. That is the main reason I have a problem putting either of them in the top 10.

No disagreement there, I just think he wasn't as dominant as some other guys.



I remember that too. I don't want to get off topic, but the "high school red-shirt" is becoming more and more common these days it seems like. Not saying it's right or wrong but there are lots reasons kids do it. Whether its because of the kids size, they're behind academically, or because the parents want their kid to have an edge athletically people are always going to find a way to do it.

Back to the topic at hand, Caldwell had some impressive high school wins including a pin over Maple his their freshman year at state plus some pretty good freestyle and greco accomplishments. I believe Boaz was a pretty good baseball player and focused on that over the summer. Didn't he leave Iowa state for a year to play baseball at Emporia state?

There are ALOT of 3X Champions that would have been 4X had they started their Sophmore year and had one more year. 8th grade redshirt in my opinion deserves an asterix.

I think Beard had some injuries and didn't wrestle complete seasons every year. Give me some time and I will dig up his career record. Still a stud, I believe Trent Cox did an 8th grade RS year too.

Got to agree with Beeson. We are ranking kids on dominance, but yet allow kids that "red shirt" to be in the same conversation. Great wrestlers no doubt, but it's a clear advantage to mature and refine yours skills another year.

I will also say the kids that dominate at bigger weights at a young age deserve a bump in the conversation. Cotton comes to mind as one of the best I have seen.

Also remember this conversation is prep careers.

I wasn't trying to take any thing away from Kriss, I mean size doesn't make a huge difference at that level, (i would know) was just stating that Beard accepted the challenge and it didn't go his way. Catch weight or not you can't deny Kriss made Beard look tiny when they wrestled.

That is correct. My problem with adding Bo to the conversation is strength of schedule. Great Wrestler and Great Career, but who did he wrestle?

I will also say and this might offend some people that just as winning at 103 or similar as a FR should have less impact than 130-160, so should guys that dominate at heavyweight. There have been some great heavies that come out of KS, but they do not face the depth of competitors that a middle weights does.

I have known several that have walked through KS competition by pinning a lot of people. These guys went on the scholastic level and won on the biggest stage in HS athletics at that time.

Another blast from the past... I knew this guy personally. Super freaky athletic. BB, as he was known in Liberal, beat a Newton senior when he was a soph in the finals in Newton. I believe it was one of the Thaw brothers (but I could be wrong). As Beeson stated, Liberal wrestlers weren't allowed to wrestle HS until they were Sophomores until the fall of 1982 I believe. Many schools had that restriction back in the day.

I guess I'll ask...any of these top ten ever get held back or start kindergarten late? I'm not saying they didn't get some advantage from the year in NM, but both being 40ish and 0 their freshman year isn't just from that one year. You would think a senior with their extra age and experience could have knocked them off. Caldwell pinned 36, I believe, as a freshman. This included a VERY good, older Paul Hansen.

I won't argue with any list if it's about HS careers, but if you're going to say a best ever in Kansas they better have some AA status in college (or beyond).

David Ray - Class '81 - only one loss in HS and I think 135 wins. 2x Jr. Nationals GR champ and FS Runner up. There wasn't a Cadet division in those days.

Doug Duell 4 time state champion and a grand state champion in 1975. The man was a beast.

He was only a 1x Grand State Champ. He graduated in '75 and the tournament only happened in 75 and 76. I know Oeser lost to Bill Boyle or he would have been a 6xer.

Layton only lost once in HS and was the Captain of the last Notre Dame wrestling team.

How about Eric Koehler, 3xer, from Nemaha Valley. He beat Melvin Douglas in the Sunflower Classic, 1981

In 1981 the Kansas Kids sponsored a Grand State like event the weekend after high school state. At the time there were 12 weight classes so 24 wrestlers qualified for the finals: 6A-9, 5A-9, 4A-2, 321A-4.

Here is my argument on just one year difference. I was an ok wrestler and went 12-14 my freshman year. My sophomore year I went 26-3-1 losing to an Oklahoma State Champion at Perry, and two Kansas State Placers(both of whom I beat later in the year) and won a State Title. My Junior year I was a State Champion and went 27-1 losing to Mike Klinglesmith, Freestyle National Champion from Midwest City Oklahoma. My Senior year I was a State Champion and went 28-1 losing to 2x undefeated State Champion Jonny McCreary from Wellington. My point is had I redshirted, I would have had a pretty impressive career and more than likely been a 4x State Champion with a total of 5 losses instead of losing 19. One year makes a huge difference. If it didn't I doubt they would have redshirted.

Cokeley could be making up names from the 70's and we'd never know

What were Randy Roarks HS accomplishments? He may not have the credentials some of these others have but he was definitely one of the slickest wrestlers to come from Kansas.

Billy Gabel was one of the most dominant high school wrestlers i had ever seen. He was a multiple time Fargo All-American , 4 time high school state champion, etc. Matt Murray from Colby is another one who should be thrown into the mix. NCAA finalist for Nebraska back in 2004 i believe

Surely, at the age of 16, in a move that foreshadowed your prolific posting on the Talkforum site, you grabbed the micro-phone, leapt onto the announcer table in full singlet splendor, and said something like this:

“A tie is unacceptable!! You either win the wrestling match or you lose the wrestling match! I am charged with scoring more points than my opponent. I failed to do so. I thus did not win and must be charged with a loss.

This is just an example of preparing the path for the child, not preparing the child for the path!! I believe the tie was with Manhattans Mitch Bammes. Unfortunately at that age I did not know that a tie was really considered a loss. I ammend my record to 26-4 and hope that Bammes will ammend his record also. Thanks for the reality check. I loved it.

I think Bryan Tennant beat Michael Bradley his Sr. Year. Tennant was also gave 2x NCAA Champion and 3X Finalist Jonny Hendricks "Big Rig" his last loss of his High School Career and his only loss his Senior year.

Good to see Dyer's name brought up in this discussion. Wasn't he the rare wrestler who started out as a freshman at like 180 pounds or something?! Was he third as a freshman and then three times - undefeated state champ?

Dyer wrestled 160 as a freshmen, finishing 3rd. He lost two matches that season, one to Jordan Nichols of Garden City in the state semi's.

He lost one match as a sophomore to a Missouri wrestler, capturing a state title at 171. He was an undefeated state champ his junior and senior seasons - both at 189.

Dyer was a physical freak. A rare combo, he was our quarterback and middle linebacker. Also a stud in the classroom - he's now a professor at the University of Missouri.

The few times I have been fortunate to watch him, he was very dominating!

The "red shirt" discussion really doesn't fly. What's the difference between Caldwell and Beard taking the year in the 8th grade or parents holding a kid out of kindergarten until he's 6? Seen a lot of kids a whole year older than the rest of their class. BTW in a lot of those cases (obviously not Caldwell or Beard), those "red shirt" kids struggle when they get to college. I figure it's because they were too far ahead of the HS competition, and didn't have the work ethic needed to succeed.

Headup. The difference is when it's done purely as a way to gain a competitive athletic advantage as a repeat 8th grader. When you hold a kid out of kindergarten at 6, it's much less likely you have a specific focus or target to gain a advantage in.

Also when you are 6 and held back, you are not moving to New Mexico for a year and training with the Adamson's. They were a very high profile wrestling family that trained Boaz and Tyler daily at a very high level for a solid year. Don't get me wrong, I like both those kids, but to say that was not a advantage is not thinking it through.

What a loaded question here. Lots of fabulous guys have been mentioned on the above posts. In my wrestling days anyone with an Ark City singlet was a beast including Ware, Beeson, and Hernandez (HS National Champion). I coached some dominant guys at Colby (ex. Murray 2x State Champ & DI National Runner-up at Nebraska, and Luedke State Champ & 2x JUCO National Champ & 2x AA at Iowa). I coached against a bunch of dominant guys also that come to mind Kreigbaum & Taplin (Abilene), Gilliland (Hoxie), and Gable (St. Francis). This list could go on forever.

I believe though this post was attempting to determine how Weigel's dominance compares to past wrestler's seasons. I have not seen this Weigel kid wrestle since he was a little dude in Russell when I coached there so I can not compare him to anyone.

I believe Boyle was 32-0, a state champion and his total wrestling stats were 32 takedowns and 32 pins. No escapes, no near falls, no reversals, no penalty points. Game over, can't be more dominant than that.

If when the whistle blows, you takedown the wrestler, put him on his back and pin him inthe 1st period, how do you:

1. Get the takedown record.
2. Get a workout in because you are cutting weight.
3. Practice tackdowns

Those kind of stats are insane and make him the undisputed champion of most dominate wrestler in Kansas. I will add this also shows a purity of purpose.

Which makes him even more impressive.

1. He doesn't care about takedown records. He is the most dominant, other records mean nothing.
2. He is so dominant that he is not cutting weight.
3. Practicing Takedowns is for the practice room so when he gets on the mat it is all business.

I believe it was 28 pins 28 takedowns as Norton's fall record is 28 I believe, but still none the less very impressive

I have to agree that Boyle is one of the most dominant wrestlers I have ever watched. I had the opportunity to wrestle in Western Kansas at the same time as Jeff (thank goodness I was a light weight). Boyle made every match look like he was wrestling a first year wrestler eventhough many of those wrestlers went on to wrestle and AA in college or play other college sports. I think one of the most impressive things about Jeff was is that he was a class act on and off of the mat.

I have also had the opportunity to watch and be part of the coaching staff in the Hays Club during Weigels progression through his prep career. Preston can wrestle with anyone in the nation and honestly probably put them on their backs. (Or as Cokeley referred to it "spin them like a top) I honestly can't say who is more dominant as they are completely 2 different styles of wrestlers. But one thing I do know is that Preston is just as much of a class act on and off of the mat as Jeff was.

Myself personally feel that dominance in wrestling should also include how these wrestlers promote themselves off of the mat as well as their accomplishments on the mat. I dont think you could go wrong with saying either of these wrestlers are one of the best ever.

I have had the pleasure of meeting him several times at Nebraska's wrestling camps, and to this day my wrestlers talk about the time he spent a couple of hours just talking to them one evening. He truly is a great ambassador for our sport.

I am not sure if today is the best time to post that he is the baddest wrestler today, especially since he got beat yesterday.

But all honestly I agree with you that he is the best wrestler in the world, it is just kind of ironic that his name comes up today after one of the biggest upsets ever in wrestling happened yesterday.

Well everything for our future prep wrestlers if you think about it. Burroughs has set the bar for a lot of America's youth and given them something to strive for.

Huge Jordan Burroughs fan and I have read the attached article more than once and still cannot find how this relates to 'Kansas most dominant prep wrestlers'. Now if you want to start a thread titled "Americas youth and give them something to strive for" and attach the article, yes I would then be able to understand the correlation.

Thanks for posting that video Chief. Forgot how dominating that finals match was. And his opponent did go on and have a very successful wrestling career in college.

Not saying I'm right or wrong, but I feel it would have to be between Dustin Williams and Preston Weigel this year.

I think I would go with Preston. But i have not seen Dustin wrestle this year either. So it is hard for me to compare. But I would also throw Brandon Ball out there if we are talking about this year only.

Corbin Nirschl has been pretty darn dominant this year as well. He is a smaller weight freshman, but I would venture to say he is the only person in Kansas to beat a Fargo finalist this year.

Michael Olsen also looks untouchable and smooth as can be.

However, just to play the devil's advocate; he was so dominate because he was high school heavyweight wrestler built like a brick s#*t house with some athleticism to go with it. That's a rare combination at the upper weights. A lot of heavys do not ever get off their backs when put there. It's much more common to see athletic kids built like that in the lower weights, thus making domination like that much harder.

This is not meant to take anything away from him, in fact I believe he was definitely one of the most dominate wrestlers from Kansas.

Trent Salsbury has been destroying nearly everyone this year. He has one loss to the RTOC Champion from Ponderosa CO so no one from Kansas has touched him. 39-1, 36 PINS!!! Don't forget, he wrestles one of the toughest schedules in the state.

Who's "the best"? Can't say. Lots of "the best". Depends on who you were watching when "the best" was wrestling. Choosing a "the best" takes away from all the other "the best". All "the bests" were "the best". That's what makes it a great sport--the memories, history, tradition, reputations, the records, the discussions, questions like "Who's the Best.

The 'best" can't wrestle the "best" to actually determine "the best". If "a best" beats another "the best" then the loser is not a "best".

It' like who was the best heavy weight boxer: Joe Lewis, Marciano, or M. Ali.

My late entry for the most dominating wrestler: late 90s Chris Brown from Columbus. 3 time sate champ 9th, 10th and 12th grades. Upset in semifinal in 11th grade---came back and punished his opponent in the 3rd place match. A very, very tense wrestler who terrorized his opponent before the matches started. Tough and technically excellent. A sad story and ending I am not going to reopen. I think anyone who saw Chris will agree he at the top of the list.

Now, would like to change the question:

1. What was the best single match you ever saw? What, what, when, where?

2. What was the best bunch of wrestler you saw on the mats on or near the same time? Who, what, when, where?

My opinions, just opinions:

1. Best match: 1997, KS Coliseum, 145 lb 4A Championship, Jason Blanding, senior, Paola, undefeated in HS, 2 time state champ VS Brandon Pfizenmaier, senior, Clay Center, 2 time state champ. Two absolutely great technical wrestlers. Move-counter, move-counter-counter the whole match. The refs truly moved to the outside circle and let these 2 elite wrestlers wrestle. Action on all other mats (6A and 5a championships halted, plus all fans in the coliseum, focused on this match. Pfizenmaier won. I think Pfizenmaier went on to be a D2 All American at a college in Nebraska. Blanding disappeared. Always heard Blanding was an undefeated freshman at Columbus but was injured and did not wrestle in the state level competition. May have moved to Chanute as a 10 grader and won a state championship. Wrestled at Paola in 11th grade and won his second championship. Great match.

2. Best group of wrestler: Again 1997 state tournament. List is too long to include everyone. Do remember 4xers Jeremy Long- SFT, 3 or 4xer Beau Tillman-Pratt, 4Xer Bo Maynes-Salina, 4xer Zack Roberson Blue Valley, all the same or next weight classes, plus several other future greats.
