Smart – Smart wrestling wins. Wrestle for control and not points. Your wrestling will take a huge step. Your level of AGGRESSIVE wrestling will climb as your skills improve and confidence grows. You can’t wrestle a super-aggressive style until you have the skills in place and this could take years. By focusing on wrestling smart, you will always be in the match and you will never beat yourself…. This is our secret and what all of our Purler Wrestling Academy students are taught.
Good luck!

Bottom – NOT giving up your arms is the key to bottom wrestling. Besides a cradle, there is NO turn that doesn’t include using the arms. So, if you do not give you your arms you will not get turned and you will get away SO much easier. We like the POST-TENSION stand up...basically we base our strong and as he attacks us, we stay based out. We wait until he lets pressure off of us and explode up then. It is not how hard you stand up; it is WHEN you stand up. We are basically setting him up for our stand up.
Good luck!

3 Reasons we fail in wrestling:

1. No System: In baseball, we have 3 moves (catch / throw / hit), while in wrestling we have 1,000s. Since 90% of your points come from just 10% of the wrestling, it is best to focus ONLY on that. Once you are ranked nationally as a high school wrestle, then you can worry about the minor tricks. Get organized. Do not deviate from THE PLAN. Fish only in productive waters.
2. Worrying Only About Training Partners: You can get really good at really bad wrestling. It happens all the time. The athletes that you watch wrestling on ESPN are very skilled and they drill, drill, drill. Instead of bouncing around from team to team in search of great workout partners, I say you become one and let the kids come to you.
3. Weaknesses: It is important the wrestler write down their top 3 weaknesses and attack those. Too often we think the coach is responsible for all of your success. Your teacher can’t make you smart. Your boss can’t make you rich. And your coaches can’t make you a great wrestler.
Good luck!

“What did my son do wrong?”
I hear this question all the time and often times my reply is simply, “Just because he lost in wrestling doesn’t mean he did something wrong.” Are there areas for improvement? Yes! But, it is important to remember that sometimes we are just not ready to beat certain kids…yet. It is unrealistic to think that a first-year wrestler is going to beat someone with 6 years of experience.
Consider this: if you go to the weight room and can’t bench press 200 pounds, it doesn’t mean you did something wrong, it means you’re just not ready to bench press 200 pounds. Your goal is to work towards improvement. Maybe it will be three years before you can bench press 200 pounds, and as such, it might be 2 years before you can beat a certain wrestler.
Keep these things in mind and work towards progress as well as by setting realistic goals.
Good luck!

4 Things That All World-Class Leg Attackers Do:

1. They know that their level change is more important than leg set up.
2. They wrestle/attack from a staggered stance. A squared stance can get you into position to score but you can’t shoot from a squared stance.
3. Unless scoring from the outside, they create a reaction - or better yet - a flurry of action before the level change and attack.
4. They strive for a quick finish.

Good luck this season!

Why Morning Practices Are Counter-Productive:

1. High school kids need a lot of sleep. Especially during an athletic season.

2. Unlike the college teams, many of which have put the brakes on the morning workouts themselves, the high school teams consist of kids who have class from 7 am till 3 pm, leaving no time during the day for homework or napping. I know my kids get a ridiculous amount of homework many nights so are already up late as it is. 6 am - 10 pm days are not uncommon due to this heavy homework load, on top of the daily grind and high school practices.

3. Many high school wrestlers are watching their weight and not eating right anyway, likely starving many days, so their ability to recover is compromised as it is, without being sleep deprived.

4. Many morning workouts consist of conditioning, and instead of splitting the workouts up, it is better to do the conditioning at the tail end of the afternoon wrestling practice as it'll give kids a higher level of conditioning anyway.

5. The myth is that it will make these kids tough, when in reality, the morning workout regimen just wears these kids down, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Then, by the end of the year, the kids hate wrestling and just wanted to be over...(and so does the exhausted coach) not a good way to end the season.

Good luck this season!

Live wrestling – a GREAT strategy to employ for live wrestling is to have one of our wrestlers on 100% defense while the other is offense. The defensive man can only score from a sprawl. This strategy will take your kids to a new level of wrestling faster than anything.

Good luck this season!

For the last part of the season it is best to get real basic. Some ideas:

1. A lot of shoulder-deep leg attacks. Basic high crotch double and single leg attacks. Get the team hitting 100s and 100s a week.
2. Mat returns: another common position focus.
3. Plenty of down-blocking drills. These and the leg attack drilling can also be used as conditioning work at the end of practice. Get the stop watch and whistle out for these!
4. Plenty of 20 second goes on bottom. Great for end of practice and most likely some of the biggest matches of the year will come from getting off bottom.
5. Old fashioned mean tight-waist arm hook ride out drills. Vital!
6. Down-block go behinds. The best move in wrestling.
7. Stalemate work- put the team into tough leg attack positions (cross face back, ankle, etc) and force them to hold on for 40 seconds while the other man must score. Toughing it out counts.
8. Go on their feet. One man offense and two man defense. Two man has a stall call so can’t run. One man has 10 seconds to get his hands locked on a leg and he wins.

These focused-effort wrestling drills will help the team to shore up their close mat winning percentages.

Good luck!

No Drill Routines. No Success.

As a wrestler or coach, it is vital that you have a set of drill routines in place. Success on the wrestling mat is not only about what you drill, it is also about what you don’t drill. Consider any Gold’s Gym training facility, needless to say there is a lot of equipment in there. However, if you are gunning for a college wrestling scholarship, you are not likely to mess with the thigh-master machine or pulling the thick rubber bands that hang on the walls…those are for the old ladies. You will spend your time dead-lifting, squatting, doing tire flips, etc. In fact, with great lifting routine, you are not likely to touch but a very small portion of the equipment in the facility. Wrestling is much the same. This is the key to success in wrestling - be it running a great wrestling room, a productive wrestling camp, or a personal wrestling program.

Good luck!

Leg attacks – there is a difference between leg attacking and leg grabbing. Squatting and shooting UP into our opponent helps us to become leg attackers. The level change is 10Xs more important than the set up in my opinion.

Good luck!
