Pittsburg/ FS / Indy Results will be posted tonight here is an article on the dual from the Pittsburg morning sun

Koehn passes another early season test
BY JIM HENRY
THE MORNING SUN
FORT SCOTT - In a matchup of potential state medalists, Pittsburg Derek Koehn decisioned Cody Kramer of Fort Scott 5-0 in their 140-pound match Tuesday night at the Fort Scott High School gymnasium.

The Tigers, winning three matches by pin and four by forfeit, won the dual 49-23.

Koehn, the 5A state runner-up at 130 last year, and Kramer, a state qualifier in 4A, were scoreless through two periods. Starting from the bottom, Koehn scored an escape 10 seconds into the final two-minute period, then had a takedown 15 seconds later and eventually put Kramer on his back for two more points.

"Kramer is a good kid,'' Purple Dragons head coach Scott Rieck said. "Derek has been getting tested a lot early in the season. He had a kid from Monett (Mo.) who won state this year. Then he had some good competition down at Claremore (Okla.), and then he turns around and comes up here and gets Kramer.

"He's stood up to the test though. He's done well, and he's wrestled real smart. He stayed focused and stayed with his game plan, and he was patient. He just waited for his opportunities to score, and when they arrived, he took them.''

"Rightfully expected,'' Tigers head coach David Brown said of the Koehn-Kramer match. "Both are quality kids. Each of them I know have spent countless hours working, training and trying to achieve the ultimate goal of a state championship. I hope one of them wins it. We'll hope that our kid wins a little more, but if we can't, we like to see southeast Kansas wrestlers do well.''

Tyler Koehn, 152-pounder, had a shorter match, pinning Cole Pruitt with 45 seconds remaining in the first period.

At 135, the Dragons' Daniel Blair won by technical fall over the Tigers' Lee Culbertson, logging four takedowns and three nearfalls during the 20-5 match.

"He's a good freshman,'' Rieck said. "He went out in his first dual of his high school career and got a victory. We're really pleased with Daniel.''

Cougar VonFeldt, Pittsburg's 189-pounder, broke a scoreless tie with a nearfall late in the third period en route to a 7-0 decision.

Fort Scott received pins from 125-pounder Michael Durrossette and 145-pounder Blake Cowen in the first period and 112-pounder Justin Sharp midway through the second period. Dakota Hall and Blake Nelson won by decision at 160 and 171, respectively.

In the preliminary match, Independence heavyweight Lee Dunham pinned Caleb Smith with seven seconds left in the first period to lift the Bulldogs to a 42-38 victory.

In fact, the Bulldogs' Jason Swearingen (189) and Auntray Dunn (215) also won by fall, giving the Bulldogs pins in the final three matches. John Hogge (119), Nick Hockett (125) and Ryan Wright (135) also won by fall.

The Tigers (5-2 in duals) posted pins by Denzel Davis (103), Sharp (112), Kramer (140), Blake Cox (152) and Nelson (171).

"I sure do wish we would have won that first dual,'' Brown said. "We're learning how to handle ourselves in duals a little bit now. We have some younger kids that need to learn how to operate in a dual differently than they do in a tournament.

"Our kids wrestled very hard. I'm not faulting anyone there. They tried their hardest, but making mistakes at critical times in a dual can cost you. That's one lesson we hope we can learn and build on and do better in the next one.

"Give credit to Independence on the first dual. They did what they needed to do, and they are making some big gains and progress. It's nice to see a kid come back and coach in the area. Brian Melchiori ... I actually coached against him when he was in high school (at Coffeyville). He has a pretty good pedigree in the wrestling community.''
