After an outstanding high school wrestling career, Hays High senior Preston Weigel has chosen to compete at Oklahoma State University next year.

Weigel, a three-time state champion in class 5A, went undefeated over the past two seasons. He lost only one match as a sophomore and three during his freshman year.

Weigel narrowed his choices down to the University of Northern Iowa, Wyoming and Oklahoma State, but noted that as a kid he always wanted to wrestle for the Cowboys. According to Weigel’s mother, Preston and the family went on only two official visits, making trips to Northern Iowa and OSU.

Northern Iowa came calling last summer after Weigel had broken his leg in track practice and developed a relationship through football and wrestling. Oklahoma State had been in the hunt as well, and seemed to help lock up the three-time state champ when legendary coach John Smith made an in home visit last week.

As for Preston, he is glad the process is over and he can look toward his future as a Division I wrestler at one of the premier wrestling schools in the country.

Weigel is slated to compete at 197 pounds and will head to Stillwater in June to start training.

Hays High wrestling head coach John Hafliger said, “This is what happens with work ethic and talent come together.” Hafliger believes Weigel is the best wrestler to walk the halls of Hays High and could be one of the best to ever compete in Kansas.
