“What did my son do wrong?”
I hear this question all the time and often times my reply is simply, “Just because he lost in wrestling doesn’t mean he did something wrong.” Are there areas for improvement? Yes! But, it is important to remember that sometimes we are just not ready to beat certain kids…yet. It is unrealistic to think that a first-year wrestler is going to beat someone with 6 years of experience.
Consider this: if you go to the weight room and can’t bench press 200 pounds, it doesn’t mean you did something wrong, it means you’re just not ready to bench press 200 pounds. Your goal is to work towards improvement. Maybe it will be three years before you can bench press 200 pounds, and as such, it might be 2 years before you can beat a certain wrestler.
Keep these things in mind and work towards progress as well as by setting realistic goals.
Good luck!
