For the last part of the season it is best to get real basic. Some ideas:

1. A lot of shoulder-deep leg attacks. Basic high crotch double and single leg attacks. Get the team hitting 100s and 100s a week.
2. Mat returns: another common position focus.
3. Plenty of down-blocking drills. These and the leg attack drilling can also be used as conditioning work at the end of practice. Get the stop watch and whistle out for these!
4. Plenty of 20 second goes on bottom. Great for end of practice and most likely some of the biggest matches of the year will come from getting off bottom.
5. Old fashioned mean tight-waist arm hook ride out drills. Vital!
6. Down-block go behinds. The best move in wrestling.
7. Stalemate work- put the team into tough leg attack positions (cross face back, ankle, etc) and force them to hold on for 40 seconds while the other man must score. Toughing it out counts.
8. Go on their feet. One man offense and two man defense. Two man has a stall call so can’t run. One man has 10 seconds to get his hands locked on a leg and he wins.

These focused-effort wrestling drills will help the team to shore up their close mat winning percentages.

Good luck!
