Our goal at Window Rock High was to build a wrestling tournament to bring together competitive teams together from an area we can draw from both AZ and NM. We have the space to host a grand tournament. We've done well in that and we get a little larger every year. In our first two years, we went from 14 to 16 teams. We're now sitting on 19 confirmed teams and and looking to have 28 schools come together for our 3rd annual event. We have other teams checking to see if they can come from even further out the way as well. In addition to our regular season wrestling and from the summer, we've also had teams from UT, CO and TX compete with us as well. Former AZ State University coach Thom Ortiz has been our clinician this past summer too.
We also recognize our veterans, from this community as well as from visiting teams. We thank teams who have stuck with us, and welcome all new comers to our home, the Bee' holdzil (Stronghold) Fighting Scouts events center.
Last year, 5 state champions, 13 state placers and one All-American have graced our mats with their presence. This year, we welcome the new teams from Pecos, Moriarty, and Gallup NM as well as Mohave from across the state.
Is 19 teams enough to have a successful tournament? Yes. Do we want more teams? Yes?
We offer a friendly atmosphere, the largest and newest of athletic venues, and a unique experience in a rural area of the Navajo Nation.
