USAW-Kansas is proud of every wrestler
with the courage to step on the mat.
Every wrestler who improves his or her skill is a winner,
but some have achieved more than most.

The following represent some of the high achievements
by
Kansas wrestlers during the 2001/2002 season.

After several dry years, Kansas finally had an NCAA Division I All American as Zach Roberson (Iowa State) placed seventh in the 133 lb. division.  True Freshman Shawn Bunch (Edinboro) came one victory shy of All American status at 125 lbs. on a 12-10 double overtime loss to Travis Lee (Cornell).  Both of Shawn's losses came in double overtime.  Nathen Lawrenz (Northern Iowa) also qualified for the Division I championships, where he finished with a tournament record of 1-2.

Kansas was also well represented at the NCAA Division II National Championships, where Shawn Silvis (Central Oklahoma) was a national champion at 165 lbs.  Other Kansas All-Americans were true freshman Chris Saferite (Central Oklahoma), 2nd at 125 lbs; Brandon Pfizenmaier (Nebraska-Kearney), 3rd at 149 lbs; Bryce Abbey (Nebraska-Kearney) 4th at 125 lbs; Riley Ross (Nebraska-Kearney), 5th at 165 lbs; and Peter Koster (Fort Hays State), 5th at 157 lbs.

Neosho County Community College, in the program’s fourth year of existence, claimed the runner-up spot at the NJCAA National Championships.  All of our Kansas junior colleges did well, with Colby Community College placing 6th and Labette Community College finishing in 16th place overall.

Fort Hays State University was fifth in the nation in academics, finishing the season with a 3.158 grade-point average.  Senior Cody Parks led the way with first-team honors.  Parks finished the season with a 16-13 record while holding down a 3.44 GPA in technology education.  He qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships and went 1-2 at the season finale.

Sophomore Daniel Miller, sophomore Jordan Nichols, junior Erich Singer and senior Matt Sleder all earned second-team honors.  Seniors Zane Engelbert and Josh Haar both made the honorable-mention squad.

Fort Hays finished 21st in the team standings at the national championships.

Eric Akin finished second in the 132 lb. division at the U.S. National Freestyle Championships.  He lost 4-0 in the finals to Eric Guerrero.  Eric ended the season ranked #4 in the nation.

At the U.S. National Veterans Championships, Wayne Petterson placed 4th in the 69 kg (148 lb) division.

FILA Cadet National Championships

The FILA Cadet Championships, featuring many of the best 15-17 year old wrestlers in the nation,  was held at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.  Tanner Gardner won the 110 lb class in Greco-Roman, and finished second in Freestyle.  Nathan Payne also competed, finishing sixth at 167 lbs.

Competing alongside the FILA Cadet tournament was the University National Championships.  Austin DeVoe & Shawn Bunch competed at the event, with Bunch taking 3rd at 132 lbs, and DeVoe finishing 5th at 121 lbs.

National Duals Teams

Team Kansas finished in eighth place at the Greco Roman Junior Duals.  In the championship match, Michigan beat Minnesota 36-24 for the national championship.  Michigan's only loss in the tournament came in pool competition, when they were beaten by Team Kansas!  We came just shy of placing at the Freestyle Duals.  After finishing third in their pool (the top two advance to the championship bracket), they advanced in the consolation bracket to the semifinals, where they lost a close 31-30 decision to Washington.

The Cadet Duals teams did very well in Greeley, Colorado, with the Greco Roman team placing sixth in the nation.  Although they didn't place in the freestyle competition, they won their pool and advanced to within one match of placing.

Junior/Cadet National Team

It was a great year for Team Kansas, with the Cadets posting their best overall results ever.  Cadets are wrestlers ages 15-16, while Juniors are wrestlers who attended high school during the 2001/02 school year.  The team coaches were:
