Eric Akin earned the #1 spot in the nation with a championship victory over Lou Rosselli in the Freestyle Team Trials at 119 lbs. Eric represented Kansas at the Pan American Games, winning a bronze medal. Colby Community College, led by head coach Steve Lampe, won the 1999 NJCAA National Wrestling Championships. With Neosho County Community College, in only its first year of existence, placing seventh and Labette Community College right behind them in eight place, Kansas wrestling was quite dominant at the NJCAA Championships. |
National High School Championships | ||||||
All competitors must be graduating seniors and a finalist in their state. The Kansas team achieved the highest point total ever which placed them 6th. These young men acquitted themselves well as gentlemen and scholar-athletes. Their demeanor and actions, both on and off the mat, are noticed by college coaches and other state leaders | ||||||

Girls' National Championships | ||||||
The United States Girls Wrestling Association National Championships invites the top ranked high school girl wrestlers that are recommended by their high school wrestling coaches. There were 314 high school girls from 40 states wrestling in 14 different weight classes and 21-22 girls per bracket. | ||||||

Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award | ||||||
Zach Roberson (Blue Valley NW) received the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award, presented annually to a high school senior, with selection based equally on outstanding wrestling achievement, scholastic achievement and citizenship. Zach combined his 153-0 high school record with a 3.81 GPA, and was a member of the National Honor Society. |
Asics Tiger High School All-American Team | ||||||
Zach Roberson (Blue Valley NW) was selected for the 125 lb. spot on the Asics Tiger All-American Team. The All-American Team is selected by a nationwide panel of wrestling experts, and is considered the top honor in high school wrestling. It is the only national all-star team for which high school wrestlers competing on all four grade levels are eligible. Asics Tiger is the title sponsor of USA Wrestling’s Junior National Championships and a major supporter of wrestling at all levels. |
Cadet World Team Trials | |||||
The Cadet World Team Trials were held at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. The champions from this even represent the United States at the Cadet World Freestyle Championships in Poland. Two Kansas claimed runner-up status on the team. | |||||

USA Wrestling Triple Crown | ||||||
There were ten athletes who won the prestigious USA Wrestling Kids Triple Crown in 1999. To win, an athlete must win USA Wrestling national titles in folkstyle, Greco-Roman and freestyle the same year. Two Kansas brothers were among the ten award winners, representing the first time that brothers have won the Triple Crown. | ||||||

Nations Elite Trinity Award | ||||||
Sixteen wrestlers won the Trinity Award by placing first at the Cliff Keen Classic, Tulsa Nationals and Reno World of Wrestling Tournaments. Three of those sixteen came from Kansas. | ||||||

Kansas had one of our best performances ever at the 1999 Junior & Cadet National Championships. Twelve wrestlers won fifteen medals, including two national champions. The highlight came in an all-Kansas championship match in the Junior Freestyle 123 lb. division. The Junior Freestyle Team placed fifth in the overall team standings. The team coaches were: | |||
