Brute Report - 04/06/07 12:06 PM

When a first come first serve type of weigh in it makes it tough, I really think Jack Roller has almost perfected the concept of tournament organization. Weigh ins seldom last more than an hour for anyone now, unless they want to weigh in late or are having to make weight. He has scales in one of the wrestling room, and wrestlers are separated according to age or grade. They are then called down according to weight, get checked through the line with one person checking registration, another with skin checks, then wrestler weighs in. Very smooth and each weight actually gets through rather easily and the wrestlers know it will do no good to rush up to the front of the line.

Things look to be pretty good here as of now, it is tough the way the wrestlers are seperated, none of our high school kids will be up until a little later, one of the complaints from many of the HS wrestlers is sharing the mat time and feeling like the event is taking away from "their" showcase. I certainly understand the reasoning behind having the smaller kids but showcasing our HS wrestlers, in their "own event" is something many of them looked forward to.(just reporting their feelings here folks).

I also think the tournament organizers are doing a good job of making this a true National event with a true national experience. This includes clinics, autograph sessions and much more.

One complaint, is that on line brackets would be a nice thing. I know maybe selfish but it is a pain to have to go through and do bout sheets with all of the commotion in the KCI Center.

All in all, the day is getting started and the sessions will all have their fair share of Kansas Wrestlers. We are expecting a long 2 days, with little time off, hopefully we will have our fair share of wrestlers in the finals tomorrow afternoon.

Re: Brute Report - 04/07/07 03:23 AM

Randy, where are you sitting to watch all of this? I wasn't too comfortable in that building so I spent every moment that the two boys I'm coaching from Georgia (former Olathe North wrestlers) away from the venue. One is my former heavyweight from 2 seasons ago, he took fifth in his HS State tournament this year, in a 32 man bracket.

He is in the semi-finals so I will be back around tomorrow, of with all the downtime maybe I'll come up and view somethings from your part of the barn. This makes the poorly run things from Virginia Beach seem fairly minor now... and their refs walked out. This venue for this tournament makes it an insane kids style national tournament.

Re: Brute Report - 04/07/07 10:08 AM

Wow, what a day, we have almost 50 Wizzers just from the Wichita area, and anther 20-25 from around the state, It is virtually impossible to coach and keep up with everyone but we have managed pretty well with the number of coaches this year. From the Wichita area, all of our kids except for 1 is still in. Our last kid last night was Blake Long who lost a heartbreaker but it was his first loss so he is still in. We got out after 11:30 last night, will bet back in about 7:am this morning. Many coaches and wrestlers didn't get supper, or got it very late, very little sleep, and will have to get up early to get breakfast. A long day, and will be another long day today. Wish could give more detailed reports and send back information, but coaching the kids right now is more important than the reports. We hardly have time to find where the kids are wrestling as we seem to never know, nor does the kids as to what mat they are on until the very last moment. Now to shower and leave for another tough day of wrestling.

Well Randy if he were using my credit card, I would hope he would take you some place special! The Golden Ox has decent food, but yesterday was Good Friday so you better stick to a Mc Fish… I would even splurge on two of them and a large fry with an apple pie! We will use my air miles to find some place warm!

The Golden Ox is a much better steak place than that other more widely known steak house up there.

2 Brandons I am wondering about, and basically sitting on pins and needles. I was there making all the bracket copies all day yesterday, unable to be there today. But Jim is, and I of course have not heard a thing. Maybe 'cause there is nothing to hear???

Goodwin (Aikens Army) and Reed from Baldwin.

Re: Brute Report - 04/07/07 01:29 PM

As is probably obvious ... I made it back up! I had to park in the last row of the lot and that walk up to the venue was absolutely brutal.

Anyway, I am set up and hoping a few coaches find me ON THE BACK ROW (Randy Dangerfield). The semis are going on right now!

... and I understand there is some concern amid the ranks. It seems some are fairly interested in what the "rest of the story" is from Virginia Beach!

The latest is the gag order is scheduled to be lifted sometime this week. I promise to update you on Reds trench coat, the gypsy Waunita, and yours truly.

It’s my understanding that Waunita was held up during a pre-flight shoe inspection! After the removal of her size 12 pumps a fungal stench made it necessary to evacuate the airport. She will be on the next flight out! It was just minor delay after the HAZMAT crew determined that the odor wasn’t life threatening.

The crowd is a little thinner as tons of kids came up just short of gaining AA! Folks have come to the heartland from Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and South Dakota. Some slept in their own bed last night but most stayed in a nearby hotel!

The KCI Expocentre may not have been prepared for nearly 1,600 kids and their parents! Regardless, it is going to come to a close with these final bouts ... bouts to determine placement!

Re: Brute Report - 04/07/07 08:20 PM

Yes they are! This competition overall is not as tough for the high schoolers as we saw last week but it still real tough for most!

It is this caliber of tournament Kansas needs to take advantage of ... close to home! Though Brute is expensive and has its problems it will still be cheaper than NHSCA!

Re: Brute Report - 04/07/07 08:28 PM

A few coaches have contacted me and asked about elevating our game!

Here is my opinion, I don't care whether it it the USAW Folk-style Nationals, the NHSCA Nationals or the Brute-Adidas Nationals, you should make one of the tournaments the last of your folk-style season. Step out and step up!

Then if your kids want to play baseball, soccer, swim, etc. that's fine. But if they still want to wrestle ... I truly believe Summer wrestlers make Winter champions!

Re: Brute Report - 04/08/07 11:24 AM

Not sure about Colt but Nate 2nd to Callahan in a very good tough match. Serious contrats to Callahan he wrestled a very smart match and an exciting 3-2 win, no mistakes and Nate just got out wrestled.

As to Wizzers reports, I am still in Kansas City, will be leaving this afternoon, from across the state we had close to 100 wrestlers wrestling with us and we likely have 75 All Americans. Our coaches were continually moving from 1 mat to the other but our Wichita area boys where I was around most did an outstanding job. There is an old saying that Iron Sharpens Iron, and with approximately 50 wrestlers just from that area, and so many state HS champions in the room, one night I counted 22, you can't help but get better.

A special thanks to all of the wrestlers but also some of the coaches like Steve Herman, Ray Kramer, Zac Pogue, and Curtis Chenoweth who didn't have any kids wrestling involved but were still in the practice room working with the wrestlers, and for all of them, and then the others who at their own expense came to Kansas City to help coach. I don't know if the parents or wrestlers realize the sacrifices these coaches like this make but it is much appreciated. All of them except Steve Herman who was in Reno but was there for each practice, and Curtis Chenoweth who was at practice and the tournament got their coaches shirts. There were many Wizzer Champions and like I mentioned earlier, many, many All-Americans. It is an honor to work with these young men, all too many to mention but Kansas can be proud.

While there are many things about the tournament one could complain about, and likely should, the competition was second to none. A very tough tournament and our Kansas wrestlers excelled. Hopefully with the outstanding showing of Kansas wrestlers involved, our voices will be heard to make the needed improvements for the future. For those suggestions though, we likely need another thread.

Rogers lost in OT to Alan Waters from Missouri. If you go to intermat.com and click on the intermat logo on the top left hand side and then scroll down on the left you can see the brackets

A big thank you to all who posted results! I'm sure it took a ton of extra time and effort but it was greatly appreciated. Since we couldn't make it this year, it was fun to check in once in a while to see how the kansas kids were doing! Congrats to all!

I would like to congratulate all the Kansas wrestlers who participated in Brute this year. I am just as proud of the guys who went 0-2 but were willing to show up and wrestle, even though they knew they had slim to zero chance of placing. They did it just so they could get better and have the experience of a large tournament environment in which to acclimate themselves for next time.

There is a lot of focus on the Champions, as well there should be. Let's not forget that some of the guys who placed 2nd – 8th wrestled in some very large brackets with lots of competition. Other brackets were relatively small. Everything needs perspective. Everyone who wrestled and performed their very best has my congratulations.
