the term "ranked" simply means that they were mentioned in some internet rankings - nothing official;

It is a given that some of the weights may be wrong. It is also a given that some real good wrestlers have been omitted. You know who you are. We will find out.

Looks like some interesting match-ups!

Why are there so many 'FORMER STATE CHAMPIONS"? Did they lose their state championships or something? "once a state champ, always a state champ right? haha! Just messin with ya.

30, and 40 seem to be the most "loaded"

Its hard to say crank is a 3 time placer when he is just currently a junior, and isenberg isnt a 3 timer....

Maple and grahm should be good

Re: Newton Tournament - 12/18/07 04:59 PM

This year the tournamant will be utilizing new software.

The Newton High School technology department is attempting to provide internet access to the gymnasium which will allow for nearly real time updating of the brackets and team scores.

Fans who are not able to attend the event will have the opportunity to follow the match results in as near real time as possible.

When the link to the tournament site is available it will be posted.

Re: Newton Tournament - 12/18/07 05:41 PM

You know I'm not sure if Isenberg (Gardner-Edgerton)is a 3 time state champion. The thing I remember most about Isenberg is that at the Newton Tournament (2007), he (I believe or was told) junped a weight bracket in an effort to wrestle Mitch Arnold (Bishop Carroll). This struck me as unusual because I've seen a few elite wrestlers deliberately avoid each other for various sundry reasons. That match (i.e. Isenberg vs Arnold) was the most exciting wrestling match I have ever seen. Isenberg won, by the way.

Aldon Isenberg won his only State Championship at 135 lbs. in Class 5A at the 2007 Tournament! Isenberg will be attempting (and favored) to win his second State Championship this year.

Date of this tourney and time of the finals please. Directions if coming from JC - Please. And, do they always start the finals ON TIME? Meaning the scheduled time as opposed to the 'ok, lets do it now' kind of thing.

Thanks.

Jan 11 and 12

Directions: Go to Abilene and take highway 15 south until you get to Newton.

They always start the finals at the scheduled time. The finals usually start around 630 with the pre finals activities starting sometime after 6 or so.

Re: Newton Tournament - 12/18/07 09:01 PM

I think some of these wrestlers are listed incorrectly.

Blaine Smith 119??
Jesse Barber has been at 119 all year
Hess from Gardner has been at 125 all year

And, jmo, DeShazer will win 112.

Re: Newton Tournament - 12/18/07 11:06 PM

I believe they started the championships early last year due to the bad weather (I think it was appx 4:30). They're normally very punctual on their start time though.

I thought Tapia-WIN was wrestling 152lbs (I think he got beat by Detmer-BC last weekend).

Also, isn't Sal Tovar from Emporia (not Hutch)?

Don't overlook Brett Delich at 135 from Mill Valley.

There are hard wire issues in the gym which are being addressed.

The school does have wireless capability however the gymnasium has extremely poor to non existant reception due to structural interference.

An individual with the local ISP will be at the high school tomorrow in an attempt to provide a solution.

We are trying, however I can not guarantee anything at this point.

It always seems to come down to hard wire issues.

Due to the layout of the facility it MAY be difficult to run a temporary ethernet cable to the gym. That is the hard wire issue.

The Newton AD is most receptive to the idea and if we are not able to do so this year he has stated he will have a year to solve the problem. The AD is a great guy and very easy to work with.

Re: Newton Tournament - 01/12/08 12:42 AM

I did not see the match, nor did any one I personally spoke with. However, a friend that i went to watch the finals with, reported to me as Chief did below that the score in the semis was 7-3.

Can any one who actually watched the match tell us about it? Sometimes scores can be deceptive but 7-3 sounds like a 'beating'. However, I may be wrong as noted in my sentence about sometimes scores can be deceptive.

Thanks.

Allsports -

You are full of it. I have watched Romero wrestle since he was little. He is a very aggressive wrestler but I have never seen him do anything close to close to being called inappropriate. Look at your post: "I heard", "I belive". You don't know one thing for certain.

I also note you created your account just prior to posting the email. I really don't care who are as I could give a Rats *** about you but I wanted to post this so others would know not to give your post in credence.

Bishop Carroll had somewhere in the neighberhood of 250 points. Clay Center was second with 182, Manhattan was third, and Colby was fourth. Coach Charbonneau from Clay Center was selected as the outstanding coach which must be new this year.

Who is this person...this is horrible.

I do not know Wood very well at all, but I do know he and my son wrestled last weekend and he never show any unsportsman behavior. My son had nothing but good to say about him.

Chief... only one problem with those results. Colvin didn't tech Miller it was the other way around. Arnold is a beast! I have never seen anybody throw a head lock that hard from their knees before in the finals!

Thanks, I pasted it from the paper. Didn't think that Colvin beat Miller.

Does anyone have all of the placers?

Re: Newton Tournament - 01/14/08 10:56 PM

You're right....That was a nasty head lock that Arnold threw. It came out of no where. I haven't seen one like that since the high school days of Ross Taplin.
Isenberg also threw a pretty slick one at the beginning of his championship match with Nelson. By the way, these two had some of the best scrambles I've seen since the Isenberg vs Arnold match @ last year's TOC. Both wrestlers seemed to have huge gas tanks.
I was also impressed with Mitch Wood-Hutch. He was giving Andrus all he could handle for most of the match. It looked like Andrus had a taped up leg & was hobbling around.
Speaking of injuries, where was Kolmer-Emp? Is he injured?

how did miller end up at 45? anybody know?

Re: Newton Tournament - 01/15/08 03:29 AM

Miller made it to the championship but was the victim of Arnold's nasty headlock in the 1st period. As noted earlier, the newspaper reported Miller getting beat in the semi's, but he actually tech falled his opponent to get to the championship.

Re: Newton Tournament - 01/15/08 04:06 AM

Mitch wood wrestled great the whole tournament, and almost beat Andrus, however, I still have the incident in my mind where in the semis where he stood up after he beat the wrestler from Derby and kicked him in the head, and the Hutch team was penalized. I don't unerstand why he would do such a thing, he was losing at the time, but that is no reason. Overall a great tournament, probably better than you will see at state. Does anyone have the fianl 8 wrestlers from each weight class? I think the 215 and heavys had some significant results that will factor in the rankings, which is the last big tournament before regionals.
