Carroll tournament provides competition

BY MATT BROWNING
Wichita Eagle correspondent
In years past, the Bishop Carroll wrestling invitational was considered one of the premier one-day tournaments in the state, with as many as seven or eight ranked teams in the field.

Carroll coach Darian Eshelman isn't certain this year's tournament stacks up to previous years in terms of the overall depth, but he believes it makes up for it by simulating what a state tournament is like.

"Even though a state tournament is a two-day tournament, our one-day event can prepare the kids for what kind of talent they will see later on in the season," Eshelman said. "I think by having an event like ours... it's more beneficial than duals."

There aren't many traditional state powers in Saturday's field, but there are still teams that have the talent to compete at state.

Heights, Class 6A's second-ranked team by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association, is in the field. Carroll is ranked No. 2 in Class 5A.

Salina South (No. 7) and Newton, which was preseason No. 8, are strong 5A programs. Also in the field from Class 4A are No. 5 Andale and No. 6 Wichita Independent.

"I still think this tournament has a lot to offer even if it isn't as strong as before," Eshelman said. "There are going to be some great individual classes."

Some of those classes include:

• The 140 pound class, which could prove to be the most entertaining. Dalton Maier from Heights (ranked No. 2 in his weight class in 6A), Jake Mainz from Carroll (No. 2 in 5A) Jason Seibel from Salina South (No. 5 in 5A), and Cody Bontz from Independent (No. 2 in 4A) all could be in the semifinals.

• At 125 pounds, two top-ranked wrestlers are scheduled to participate; Dylan Penka from Carroll and Daniel DeShazer from Heights. Possibly standing in their way is Salina South's Steven Plott, who is ranked No. 3 in 5A.

• The 160-pound class has a pair of No. 1 wrestlers in Kyle Detmer from Carroll and Benny Armstrong from Andale. There is also Travis Rogers from Newton, who is ranked No. 4 in 5A.

"The kids are really looking forward to getting some good competition," Eshelman said. "It's good to prepare them to this kind of schedule."

Finals are scheduled to start between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m., with two mats going at the same time. The consolation bracket will be on one end and the championship match on the other.

Austin Blanchat 140 pinned Cain McEwan (previously ranked 5th at 135)so he should help upset the placings.

I heard that Chase Nelson from Heights was going to drop down to 160... That should make it a little interesting for Detmer. I can't wait to see that match!

Re: Bishop Carroll Tournament - 12-20-2008! - 12/21/08 03:14 AM

Detmer won 8-7, Plott did take third and did not wrestle for it because Cody Beasley was not allowed to wrestle since it would have been his 6th match of the day. Some relly good wrestling, some really good stalling, really good coach delaying matches to favor their wrestlers that ran out of gas, and then there was the officiating WoW! There was Good at times then not so good but its over for the day.

Carroll rallies to win tourney

BY MATT BROWNING
Wichita Eagle correspondent
At its own tournament Saturday, the Bishop Carroll wrestling team was in an uncommon position.

The Eagles weren't winning.

After the 145-pound final, Andale led Carroll by 3 ½ points; the lead grew to 6 ½ after the 150 final.

Then the Eagles came up with clutch performances from a former state champion and a couple up-and-coming wrestlers to win the team title.

Kyle Detmer, who won the Class 5A 152-pound class two years ago, defeated Heights' Chase Nelson at 160 to start the Eagles' rally. Capping off the comeback were consecutive pins by Devon Keith at 171 and Luke Hirschler at 189 to give Carroll 148 points, 1 ½ better than Andale.

"Two-thirds of the way through, I didn't feel great and was concerned," Carroll coach Darian Eshelman said. "But I always believed in the kids. I'm really proud."

The Eagles had opportunities for championship points in 125 and 140, but came up empty.

Two state contenders battled 125 when Heights' Daniel DeShazer and Carroll's Dylan Penka squared off, with DeShazer winning 6-2.At 140, Wichita Independent's Cody Bontz took care of the Eagles' Jake Mainz 4-1.

Andale took advantage of Carroll's defeats. Jake Hattabaugh defeated Wichita South's D.J. Collins 14-2 at 145, followed by Willie Eck's 7-6 victory over Newton's Nathan Murphy in 152.

During the five middle weight classes, Andale made up 9 ½ points.

"We made a couple mental mistakes in some matches but I thought we did really well," Andale coach Brad Lies said. "Things didn't go our way later."

The other anticipated matchup of the evening was Detmer versus Nelson, the defending Class 6A 171-pound champion. Detmer recorded two takedowns early to take a 4-0 lead after the first period. He won 8-4.

Keith was dominant in his match. He took down Andale's Scott Lester twice in the first period, before recording the pin 3:26 into the match.

"When I saw Detmer get the win, it got me pumped," Keith said. "I knew I had to get us some points."

Hirschler struggled with Newton's Nathaniel Martens. He trailed 4-2 after the first period, hanging on with a couple of escapes. He seemed destined for his fourth loss of the season.

But something clicked. He responded in the second period with a flurry and recorded his pin at 3:29.

"Before my match, I talked to Coach Eshelman and former Coach Stovall and I started to believe," Hirschler said.

"Those two matches were like a dagger in the heart," Lies said.

Was the Detmer/Nelson match 8-4 or 8-7? The results page says 8-7 and the article above says 8-4.

Chief-
The score was 8-7, very exciting to watch.
Master Blaster-
Give it a rest, you happen to be one of those people from kids that has been complaining. You can go back and look at the statement you made last year in the burden fireworks thread. If a coach isn't arguing questionable calls, I don't think hes doing his job.As for the crowd being disrespectful, why don't you give some examples.I was there all day and never saw it.

At 119, was it Blaine Smith or D'ondre Davis that beat Dalton Miller in the semis?

I would also like to add that the officiating was very, very poor at this tournament. I'm sure im not the only one to think this, if i am please tell me.
