The Midlands is generally regarded as one of the top folkstyle tournaments in the country.

It features some of the best collegiate wrestlers in the country and some of the best teams. It also inlcudes many former collegians who continue to compete competitively and from time-to-time some of the country's elite high schoolers are invited to compete.

This year's version kicks off on Sunday with pre-tournament festivities and wrestling starts on Monday. Kansas products Zach Roberson and Joe Johnston are each seeded at their respective weight.

There are a number of interesting story lines in this year's event, some of which include

1). How will the defending 125 pound NCAA champ Travis Lee of Cornell fare against the likes of Roberson, Moore and Jayne at 133?

2). How will Nik Fekete do after the lengthy legal battle he has waged against his former school (Michigan State) in hopes of gaining a scholarship release so that he may compete for Hofstra?

3). Will Montana State-Northern's manchild Emmett Wilson prove the nay-sayers wrong as they continue to state that Wilson's NAIA accolades mean nothing (even after Wilson won Vegas earlier this month)

4). Can heralded high schooler Alexander Tsirtsis medal in the event? He will be just the third high schooler to compete in the event (although others were invited, but declined to compete - including Blair Academy's Steve Mocco).

The two others were Jimmy Carr of Erie, Pa., who won the 126-pound title in 1973, and Cary Kolat of Rices Landing, Pa., who entered the tournament in 1989, when he took third at 118 lbs.

Tsirtsis (who is 195-0 in high school) has beaten several ranked collegians in freestyle, but at 141 pounds in folkstyle, you would think he would have a more difficult time than the others who earned medals at lighter weights.

5). and on, and on, and on.......

Free audio broadcasts are being offered, if you want to tune in to the event. It does require a special media player, but a link is provided for a free download of that player.

Here is the link for intermat's coverage. From there you will note a link for audio coverage.

Good luck Zach and Joe!

Emmet Wilson on Montana State is phenomenal...I think he's one of the best non D1 wrestlers in that Nation right now...though being ranked #2 I think he's going to have to doubly prove himself although he was ranked #3 going into Las Vegas.

Montana State is a quality wrestling school. I have watched several of their guys wrestle very good at midlands.
Emmet Wilson is a very tough kid. If he won Vegas he is certainly the real deal. I wrestled at the vegas tournament and it is no punk. I never wrestled Emmet, but I wrestled their last great wrestler Turk Lords. He was a 3 or 4 time national champ and a numerous Vegas placer a few years ago.

The only Kansas wrestlers I noticed on the Midland brackets were

133lbs-Zach Roberson
125lbs-Tanner Gardner
157lbs-Daniel Peterson

I did not see Joe Johnson on the bracket?

Travis Lee was upset at 133lbs, and Travis Paulson was upset at 157lbs.

Tanner and Zach won their first round matches, but it looks like Tanner will face Luke Eustice in the next round! Daniel Peterson has not wrestled yet.

Good Luck to all the Kansas participants!

Are there any Kansans I missed?

Ian Bork/ Lawrence, Ks at Stanford @ 197 - first match up is against Fulsas of Iowa..

how about Adams State 157 knocking off Paulson of Iowa State..

About Emmett Wilson - He is the real deal and Lords was the best 97 across the board and all agreed. It is great to have the paridy across divisions.

that Lockett kids looks tough. from "pigtail" to the semis, beating lee. I was real impressed with Lee last year in the NCAA's. So good on his feet. I believe he was a national freestyle champ from Hawaii if i'm not mistaken. 133 is a big step up from 125. Roberson/Moore is going to be a heck of a match...again

Your 2003 Midlands Champion at 133 pounds is none other than Iowa State's Zach Roberson with a 12-7 win over Mark Jayne.

Congrats to Zach on this terrific honor!

Joe is out right now with a torn MCL. He should be back soon.

I just watched the Iowa/Iowa state dual on TV and saw Joe had a huge knee brace on. It looked to me like a healthy Joe will beat T. Paulson next time they wrestle if he opens up his offense like he did at the end of the match. Joe seemed to take the match over on his feet, even putting Paulson on his back just out of bounds.

Why did David Ray go to Goddard in 1981?
