To point something else out, rooting for UCO in DII wrestling is kind of like rooting for the Yankees in MLB. For your information, and for many others on this site, UCO has over 10 full scholarships to recruit with. They have no conference rules for scholarship numbers, so the fact that they contend for national championships every year is a given....The average for DII is about 4.7 scholarships. UNK works with only 1.3 scholarships. Kind of amazing what we do up here with our kansas kids, huh? Soak this year up, because UNK will be loaded for the next number of years, I hope that UCO can keep up with their 10 full boats...
By the way Aaron, if you're not busy this weekend, UNK is hosting the Loper Open and during an intermission they are having a presentation for the 2003 National Dual Champions with the team receiving their rings...Hope you can make it!!!

For everybody else, there will be some great matchups with tons of Kansas kids from FHSU, CCC, Labette, UNK, UNO, UNL, and others going at it...hope to see some Kansas fans there!!!

Is UCO doing something illegal? Maybe you know something I didn't realize. When Coach James talked to me about some of my wrestlers going to school there, 10 full rides was never mentioned. I'm really not sure what they actually have and I'm not sure you do either but I do know they were cut back on a few years ago.
None of my wrestlers were ever given a large amount of help until they proved their contribution to the team at UCO. If they are not doing anything illegal, then I think maybe you have to put them in with the OSU's, OU's, Iowa's and others who people love to hate because they are winning. I personaly applaud UNO, UNK, FHSU and all the other schools who give Kansas kids a chance. I feel Kansas has plenty of outstanding wrestlers to field a very good D-1 team, its just too bad we don't have one. Since we don't have that D 1 program I'm proud to of had the opportunity to send Marc Hull, Todd Drake, David Hull, Chad Drake, Shawn Silvis and Chris Saferite to a quality program with an excellent coaching staff. Yea, Swaz may be alittle proud, but I don't think he intentionally leaves people out.

I don't know where you are getting your averages but by talking around to some of the D2 coaches just in the Midwest region they are allocated the full 9...btw...on http://www.athleticscholarships.com, it states that

The NCAA allows each division 1 wrestling program 9.9 scholarships and in division 2, 9 scholarships are available .

Yeah im thinking his info on all the scholarship stuff is a little off. I'm pretty sure even O- State just has 9 point something scholarships to give out. And i seriously doubt UCO would have more.
Oh and by the way congrats to those UNK boys and their DUAL rings, im sure they're nice!

Dear Mr. Sweazy:

The link you provided to support your argument is incorrect. The link should be athleticscholarships.net

Hey, no need to thank me for the correction! I am happy to assist you in your learning quest!

WRESTLING SCHOLARSHIP STATISTICS & INFORMATION.

"Not all athletic scholarships are full ride scholarships like football and basketball, so called "head count sports"; most are classed as "equivalency sports', like college wrestling .Put simply this means that coaches can "share" their allocation between a larger number of wrestlers.

This is good news for the athletes. In division 1 a coach can divide "9.9" scholarships between a larger number of Wrestlers. Say 25 partial scholarships instead of 9 full ride scholarships. If you are good enough of course then a full ride scholarship is always on the cards.

There are 85 division 1 and 38 division 2 colleges that offer wrestling scholarships.

That's a total of 1,183.5 wrestling scholarships available in the NCAA alone.

The Midwest dominates college wrestling, with schools such as Iowa, Oklahoma, Penn State, and Nebraska almost always claiming the top positions in collegiate rankings. Wrestling is a sport taught from an early age and supported by entire communities. Midwestern schools maintain strong programs because they can recruit from the best high school programs located in their own states

The NCAA allows each division 1 wrestling program 9.9 scholarships and in division 2, 9 scholarships are available."

Just a little clarification. The figures you posted from that RECRUITING SERVICE are the maximum amount of wrestling scholarships that the NCAA allows, not what is actually given out by all NCAA schools.

Many school administrators dictate that far fewer scholarships be given out than the maximum allowed for financial reasons.

The wrestling programs that are allowed by their administration to give out the maximum amount of scholarships allowed by the NCAA obviously will be more consistant winners through the years than schools whos administration chooses to save money by giving out fewer than allowed.

Richard,

Just ribbing you here, but when did Penn State become part of the midwest? Oh, I guess it's in quotation marks so that doesn't count.

Thanks for the info though, I did not know that.

Dear Mr. Lane:

I wondered the about the choice of schools myself. I would have included Minnesota rather than Penn State.
