do wrestlers have to wrestle for jr.high if they have a wrestling team. Alot of wrestlers are quitting kids wrestling till subs to wrestle jr.high and most of them don't like it. I think that the wrestlers should wrestle youth because then they have a fell what tecniques other wrestlers do and stuff like that. If you go into subs and you haven't wrestled any of those kids before you probably are going to have a hard time the first time wrestling them.

No. If there is a Jr. High team in ur area the kid doesn not have to wrestle for them. In fact I wouldn't let them wrestle Jr. High, for the reason of, I have seen a lot of awsome wreslters slip through the cracks a little bit and become worse than when they started. I didn't wreslte middle school even though the head coach kept asking me to. I stayed in kids and am very thankful of it. I got more mat time, more experience, I got to see what my opponents would be like come subs through state, and it really helped keep me where I needed to be as far as not slippin through the cracks.

as i stated in an earlier post my son is now wrestling in middle school and loving it. our motivation for beginning jr. wrestling some 5 yrs. ago was to help him compete at the middle and high school. as for your need to know your opponent,i feel there is little profit in wrestling the same kids 3,4,and5 times a season. it is for this reason we spent our jr. time
at the kickoff clasic, cotton bowl, usjoc,and tulsa nationals.
we could debate the verities of jr. vs middle school wrestling untill the cows come home, facts are my son likes participates,and benifits from both

melliott, Thank you for a great post not a me me me attitude from a father of a great wrestler, and what a well said response as well, We too see no need to wrestle the same kid 3-5 times especially if you are winning big it does nothing for either kid. Those are the EXACT reasons we started the jr program as well, and it has benifited my son who is now in High School, he enjoyed the team aspect and friendship of being with his class mates on the jr high team. I am sure he missed out on some compitition that may some day be benificial to him but we did not get into this to be world beaters if he becomes a state HS champion so be it if he places @ the state level so be it but he will have learend all the things this great sport has taught him and take them into the real world just like all the other state champions, state placers and all the other kids who just wrestled.

I can agree to what ur sayin, both of you. If ur kickin someone's butt over and over and over again, then yeah there's no point to it. But the same thing can happen wether it's in jr. high or even high school. Or at any of the three levels u can have awsome head-to-head competition. And if your kid is having a blast wrestling jr. high, then great for him, seriously. I was just talking about my point point of view, and I respect both of ur opinions. And I wish ur son(s) the best of luck to them and hope for a great future for them in wrestling and in life.

I would tend to agree with most but would like to add another comment. My son started kids wrestling at 10 years old,late by most standards. When he was a 7th grade student, we considered allowing him to skip the school program and focus on Kids but the then highschool coach brought up a good point. If some of my sons non wrestling friends see his success in the school program and follow him to the Kids program, the highschool program will be stronger in the future. We are a little different in that our middle school program ended the first week of December so he only missed a couple weeks of the Kids program.
No, the compitition is not as strong as in Kids but our middle school program was better these past 2 years and that should continue in highschool in the next few years.

There are many positive aspects for belonging to a schools junior high wrestling program. However, there are also many negatives for a junior high wrestler who has been competing at a high level as a youth.

I have seen some kids drop down a notch or two while participating in junior high wrestling comparared to those that competed in clubs and consistently practiced and competed against better competition.
