Olympic Champion Rulon Gardner Featured at Wrestling Camp Summer is right around the corner and that means many activities will be happening for kids.
This summer, June 12-17th, Dana College will be the site of the 2005 Quest 4 Gold Wrestling Camp.
The featured clinician of the camp will be 2000 Olympic Champion and former Husker All-American, Rulon Gardner.
People from across the U.S. watched in amazement as Gardner beat the unbeatable in an Olympic match no one thought he could win.
The match was later dubbed "The Miracle on the Mat."
Gardner, with no major title to his name, ended Russian Alexander Karelin's string of three Olympic Gold Medals and a 13-year unbeaten streak. Until that day, Karelin had never lost in international competition and had not conceded a point in 10 years.
Gardner celebrated his 1-0 victory with a cartwheel and a somersault.
Most recently, Gardner completed his international career by taking home the bronze medal in the 2004 Games in Athens and retiring his shoes.
Gardner was also the 2001 World Champion. He will travel back to the state of Nebraska where he competed as a Nebraska Cornhusker to be the featured clinician at the Quest 4 Gold Wrestling Camp.
"I have had a chance to work with Quest 4 Gold Camps in the past and they know how to get the most out of the wrestlers,” Gardner said “I look forward to working in the future to help build the future Olympians and champions.”
Richard Fergola, Camp Director, is responsible for bringing Gardner in for the camp. "I have done a couple of camps with Rulon in the past and had the opportunity to spend eleven days at training camp with Rulon this past summer while he was preparing for the Athens Games,” Fergola said. “Rulon is not only a great wrestler, but a terrific person and works very well with kids."
In addition to Gardner, the Quest 4 Gold Wrestling camp will feature several other international stars.
Hailing from Romania are twin brothers Bogdan and Aurel Ciufulescu. Bogdan was a 1996 Olympian in Freestyle for Romania. Aurel was 4th in the 1994 Worlds. Both brothers were two-time junior college All-Americans in the states. Bogdan and Aurel will bring a world of experience to the Quest 4 Gold Camp.
Dana College’s coaches and All-American wrestlers will also assist with the camp.
Each camper will get 10-12 matches. Instruction will be individualized, with some sessions broken up into high school and youth for more one-on-one attention.
The Quest 4 Gold Wrestling Camp has been designed to provide wrestlers of all ages with the much needed know-how for becoming a champion. It embodies a curriculum of concentrated teaching, drilling and practical application of the basic skills of wrestling. Every facet of the sport is covered by our expert clinicians including: takedowns, pinning, escapes, reversals, mental attitude, strength development, nutrition and weight loss. In addition to instruction and lectures, this camp offers a great deal of drilling and live wrestling.
