Is it just me, or do the “buffer week” rules seem silly? I think it is a shame that a student is not allowed to use any of the facilities within their school district in order to get into shape for their upcoming season. I do, however, find it interesting that cheerleading squads are allowed to practice in gymnasiums during buffer week. I do understand that, technically, cheerleading squads are an activity. But, tell any cheerleader that cheerleading is not a sport and see what their reaction is!

Kind of forced our team who has a couple of tournaments this weekend to look for a place to practice. Thanks to the Caylors we have practice facility this week on Wed and Thurs evening. There are a lot of great wrestlers who are trying to stay in shape and get in as much mat time as possible prior to the start of the season. It is a tough rule, but thankfully some of us in the Wichita area have found places to practice that helps us out while at the same time respecting and honoring the rule.

I'm with you oldyeller, we here at Goddard have opened our room for any high school kid in the area to pratice free of charge. Now we have all the high school kids except the ones from our team. What a crock!

Here's the ultimate question (one I starting asking in the 80's, when in HS and never got answered): Why is there one in the fall, between the fall and winter sports; Yet there's not one in the spring between the winter and spring sports??

The seasons run into each other in the spring. I think it's a good idea to have a break. It gives the kids a chance to get caught up on homework. It gives the coach's a chance to make sure everything is caught up in their classroom. We had parent/teacher conferences during the week. I do think that cheerleaders should be made to observe it also. Their coach's are maniacs (or psycho)!! They practice at 6:30 every morning all fall and then have to practice during buffer week??? give them a break.

Well after hearing all the responses here I would recommend that the KSHSAA do away with buffer week. Obvioulsy people are bending but not breaking this rule. Kind of seems useless to even try to impose this rule as kids, and parents, and I'm sure coaches are finding ways for their kids to practice. I have nothing wrong at all with a kid if he wants to go run, lift, etc... during buffer week but to provide them with a facility to get on the mat just seems wrong.

I think the main idea to have a buffer week is to prevent high schools from starting practices that soon after football and cross country season. They want the kids to have a break from sports for a little while before jumpining into another intense season. I don't think they'll change the rules either. But I don't think they mind so much people going around the rules as long as it's the kids choice to do so.
