Cornell’s Nothern named Iowa Conference Wrestler of the Week
Cornell freshman Nick Nothern (Salina, Kan.) has been named Iowa Conference Wrestler of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Jan. 7. Nothern won the 133-pound weight class at the 29th Annual Cornell Matman Invitational on Jan. 6. He opened the tournament with a pin of Central’s Nick Johnson (3:59), and then posted three straight decisions — 6-0 over Wartburg’s Sean White, 9-4 over St. John’s (Minn.) Tim Thompson, and 8-5 over William Penn’s Nick Cucciniello — to advance to the championship match. In the final, Nothern defeated fourth-rated Jestin Hulegaard of Buena Vista on riding time criteria following a 5-5 double-overtime tie.
Nothern has won 12 consecutive matches and now has a season record of 25-6. A 2006 graduate of Salina South High School, Nothern is the son of Glen and Karla Nothern, Salina.
Cornell is rated No. 16 in NCAA Division III.
